I Need a New Book

I was reading 50 shades but the last one has completely lost my interest. I thought about the Hunger Games but something about children killing each other for the enjoyment of spectators just does not sound like something I want to read. I like a lot of different types of books. I loved the dragon tattoo series, and I also enjoy true stories like the perfect victim and a child called it. I am open to any and all suggestions! What are some books you all have loved?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for all the wonderful suggestions. I have decided to read the cloud atlas, but I am going to save all these suggestions to work on over the next few months. And who knows, maybe I will even give the hunger games a chance :) Thanks again everyone.

Charlene Harris has 2 different series that are really good: The Sookie Stackhouse novels (True Blood) and The Harper Connelly Books. Both great reads!

The Hunger Games were GREAT! You will not even think about the charachters being 'kids'...read the series, promise you will love them...we seem to have the same taste in books.

Have you read any Lisa Gardner? She has a bunch of great ones and they are like FBI profiler/Suspense books...

My favorite book of all time is The Red Tent. Every woman should read it.

If you like non-fiction, try Erik Larson's books. He wrote The Devil in the White City & In the Garden of Beasts, among others.

For quick, laugh-out-loud, raunchy reads, try Chelsea Handler's books.

A popular read this summer was Gone Girl. It was hard to put down.

A friend of mine recommended me to www.goodreads.com

You can search for books you've read and give them a rating. The more books you rate, the better, because then the website can give you recommendations of what to read based on your likes/dislikes. It's actually pretty neat!

Also, a good one (albeit it's in the young adult category) is called The Crimson League by Victoria Grefer. It's a fantasy, so if you don't like magic, wizard, etc. type books, you won't like it. Hopefully you do like them, though, because it's a good book!

The best book I've ever read is Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. It's non-fiction and just the most unbelievable story. Very well written and inspiring. It's humbling and makes you value everything you have in your life!

A friend of mine kept recommending Hunger Games and I finaly gave it a shot and finished them all in a week. There is so much more to the story than the games.

Someone else said the Shiver series. I loved this one too.

I couldn't get through the dragon tattoo book at all so I give you a lot of credit there.

I was just running to the library today to return the last three books I read but they were closed so now I'm late and will owe $.60-ouch-lol

They werea romatic comedy - Match me if you can by Susan Elizabeth Phillips-I've read others from her-they are nice reads.

Another story called Scorpio Games by Maggie Stiefvater (Shiver series) which was really a love story but there is some mean mythical water horses.

A Silience by Michelle Sagara It's book one of the Queen of the Dead and I can't wait til there's another one. It's a great story.

Have you heard of The Hangman's Daughter? I got it on my Kindle about a year or so ago and I LOVED it. More recently, I pre-ordered on my kindle (got it for like $3) and got the follow-up, The Dark Monk: The Hangman's Daughter Tale. I am midway through it and love it, too.

Thought the novels are fiction, the author is actually has a "hangman" from generations ago in his family genealogy.

If you liked Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth, you will probably enjoy these two books also.

My fave series of all time is The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. First book is called The Eye of the World. They are incredibly long but wonderful. I started reading them in 1992 and the last and final book is due out in spring of 2013.

Shiver series was good. Hunger Games really is about so much more than the killing. That part made the movie really hard to watch. You don't get the deeper parts from the movie.

I'm listening to Gone With the Wind right now. I've never seen the movie but everyone says you have to read the book so I'm using my 8hrs a day of factory work time wisely.

Anything by Lisa Kleypas or Jude Deveraux for romances.

For non fiction, try Once Upon a Town: Miracle of the North Platte Canteen. From Dec 5, 1941 to April 1, 1946 every troop train was met by volunteers at that train station. It really is an amazing book on how wonderful this country was at one time and kind we can be to one another.

Carry Me Home by Sandra Kring is also an amazing novel.

Just from your question above, it seems we have the same taste in books. I too got half way thru the third 50 Shades and will probably leave it at that. Definitely try Gone Girl. People are raving about it. Also, I loved the Emily Giffin books for a light and easy read. That is the Something borrow series. I also like anything Luanne Rice to get lost in.

Just the thought of reading relaxes me...which reminds me that i should get my kids in bed :)

You should really check out the Hunger Games. It's actually a story questioning bigger issues, it's not about children killing each other for entertainment, it's more about questioning how the government sacrifices our youth in the name their OWN interests.
Book one was GREAT, book two was okay but book three? I couldn't even finish it (and that's rare for me!)
Ooh I like Divine Designer's suggestions too, especially The Glass Castle, that was an AMAZING read! And the follow up was great too, Half Broke Horses, what a fantastic author.

Check out Game of Thrones series. It's Arthurian legend-like. My brother, BIL, sister, dad, and I are all in one part or another of the series. I like it..

On a side note ... Love Eagle River, though I haven't been there since middle school. Still have very fond memories.

ETA: just thought of another one that I loved and had a hard time putting down so I could sleep ... It's a memoir called "Piece of Cake" by Cupcake Brown. An amazing women who overcame MASSIVE adversity in her life.

Hunger Game series. My husband wanted to watch the movie, so we did, pretty good, but left questions for me. So I bought the book, read it in 4days, 2nd book, read it in 2 days, 3rd book took a bit longer and although I think it was good, it did not hold my interest the same as the other 2 and didn't think it ended the best. But those are the first books I've read since both of my children were born.

I also read unbroken by lauren hilenbrand. It is a true story, there is very little romance in it, but it is gripping, and interesting.

I also read sabine crossing, a true story about an early family in the texas area, and their trials, deaths and births. It is a fabulous story, one of the few books that has gripped me until the end, I didn't skip any parts of it, it is so sad, but also triumphant.

My fave books of all time are the Earths children series by Jean Auel - I am sure you have heard of them, but they are about a cave girl, there are 6 books and the first four are simply spectacular, the last two are not so good, Jean Auel is in her 80's and waning a bit, but if you have never read the first few books, you will be amazed. Start with clan of the cave bear.

Anything by Kelley Armstrong. Her Women of the Otherworld series starts with Bitten, about the only female werewolf. She also has a young adult series called Darkest Powers which I read in about 3 days. She's a great writer :)

I also like Black Ships and Hand of Isis by Jo Graham.

I was so disturbed by the concept of the Hunger Games that it took me several weeks before I would read it. Even then I skipped to the end to make myself feel better before I read it through. Mamazita is right in saying that the story is so much bigger than the actual games, and even during the games it's not nearly as suspenseful as I expected. I really wish someone had explained that to me. I had so much trouble understanding how a book like that could be so popular.

I've actually been reading the "I Am Number Four" series. It's a teen series, but the movie peaked my interest. The writing isn't the best, but the story is intriguing. I'm very curious as to where the story is going. There are currently 3 books in the series, but I don't know how many the author intends.

I love the Janet Evanovich series about Stephanie Plum (bounty hunter). The first one is called, "One for the Money". I think there are 18 books in the series and I am on number 7! I find myself laughing aloud sometimes :-)

I also enjoy Kristin Hannah books!

I don't read much - don't have time, but thoroughly enjoyed the Twilight series. My Mom, who's not much into fiction, couldn't read them fast enough and my girlfriend, who's not into vampire stories, almost took off work to get through them. They're crazy addicting if you have not already read them.
