Good Non-Fiction Books for Junior High Kids

My son (13) and daughter (12) like books, and I'd like to find some non-fiction they'd enjoy reading over the summer. My son *loved* "Unbroken" - it was a non-fiction book that was interesting and suspenseful, but not overly gross or inappropriate for his age. My daughter likes books about strong women in history, but isn't as strong a reader as my son. Any suggestions? My son can read adult-level books, but I don't want them to have a lot of romance in them. My daughter is more at the normal 6th-grade reading level. Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi PC,

I can perhaps try some suggestions from memory :) for your daughter.

I remember reading age appropriate biographies of:
Florence Nightengale
Amelia Earhardt (the pilot)
Diary of Anne Frank (a tough read so you need to judge if this is an appropriate age)
Clara Barton

I bet there are biographies out there of also
Harriet Tubman
Susan B Anthony
...

Best of Luck
Jilly

My daughter just finished the first book in Rick Riordan's new Kane Chronicles series, called "The Red Pyramid." She loved it. It is similar to the Percy Jackson series, but apparently features Egyptian gods (which kids find fascinating, of course). She also just finished the Hunger Games trilogy and couldn't put them down.

ETA: Sorry, I know those aren't non-fiction, but in any event... fun books for that age group?

I know when I was about your daughters age I liked the love comes softly series by Janet Oke they are not non fiction but they are very good and very clean. My son does not read a lot of non fiction. He reads adult level too and is the same age. Some of the books he's enjoyed is the Percy Jackson searys and the ones by that author. I know there are many more but those are the ones that stuck out to me that are age approprate. Right now he's reading some of Tom Clancys but those are not all age approprate. I have to check them before I let him read them.

Good luck and God Bless!
