Hypno-birthing?

I was just wondering if anyone out there had done hypnosis birthing. I'm 18 weeks pregnant and I'm having my baby at home and I'm really interested in using this method. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions on which hypno-birthing tapes/cd's to use? If you've used it, did you think it was easy? How well did it work? If anyone can share their experience it would be very helpful. Thank you so much!

Hi F.,
I'm also 24 and 18 weeks pregnant.... : )

Well, I haven't personally experienced a Hypno birth.
I'm just not brave enough to go w/out the meds but I do know of a woman that does this for a living and she "tried" talking me into it when I was pregnant with my 1st.
She told me it's one of the most relaxing ways to birth a baby and when she did a hypno birth for her own daughter, she said the baby was born within 2 hours after labor starting and it was a very peaceful relaxed time for her.

Good luck to you and let us know how it works out for you if you decide to do it.

N.

I don't know about hypno-birthing, but out of my 3 children, the one I had in the water was by far the easiest (even with back labor)! It was so easy, and the pain just disappeared in the water, it was wonderful! It takes an understanding midwife (Betty Winford at www.Special-Beginnings.com in Grand Prairie is wonderful, or might have suggestions for someone in your area). May God bless you and your family!

I used Hypnobabies for my natural birth and I loved it. Although I did feel pain, I really think the whole training helped me have a quicker labor and delivery. I learned to relax and go with the contractions (pressure waves) instead of being afraid of them and tensing up. All the positive messages were great and I loved the daily affirmations CD. I would recommend it to others.

Congrats on your pregnancy!
I have taken the Mongrans Hypnobirthing course with a clietn, I am a birth doula, and it was a really great birth. But some of these classes can be very expensive. I HIGHLY recommend a bok called Mind Over Labor by Carl Jones, usually availabe on Amazon for about $3.00. I use this method alot with my clients and they love it as well. Its not a big book, but the visual imagery lessons are fantastic and youcan set your labor to your own music.

I had both my children using the HypnoBirthing® Rainbow CD (hypnobirthing.com). I also read the book. I think the cd is wonderful, of course it put everyone else in the room to sleep but me! I had my first child in the hospital and second at the birthing center. It was an absolutely wonderful experience and great to go home only 2 hours later. If I have another I plan to have it at home as well.

Good luck!

I used hypno-babies CDs two years ago when I had my son at home. I really liked it. I thought it helped a lot by giving some coping techniques and teaching focus. I also labored in the water in a birthing tub (portable hot tub). The water made a HUGE difference. When I had to get out of the water to pee I couldn't wait to get back in. I can't explain why, but the contractions feel totally different in the water than out. Don't get me wrong. IT HURT! Like crazy! At one point I remember telling myself that it was too much and that I had made a mistake. I remember my exact thought was "remember this. this is too much. I have made a mistake. I could be a the hospital not feeling a thing". However, once it was over I was (and am) glad I did it. It obviously was not too much. I completly enjoyed it and I plan to do it again as soon as we can! Good luck. If I can give you any other adive, feel free to ask. My midwife was great...Molly Germash. If you are looking for a midwife you can find her and others on www.texasmidwives.com.

F.,

I had a birth under hypnosis with my first child (almost 13 years ago). It truly was a unique experience. I did experience some pain, but nothing like what I was expecting. The delivery was fine and my daughter was born healthy. I was put under hypnosis by a professional. I had never heard of tapes/cd's. I can not tell you how much the service ran. The services were performed for free since I was an Active Duty Servicewoman. He heard about my situation being that I was 3 weeks past due and high risk. I was extremely nervous when I went, but that soon faded. You must be open to the process for it to work. This isn't for everyone. In the end it is your mind over matter.

Good Luck and Congrats on the birth of your newest member!
Dene'

P.S. The only reason I didn't share in the same process with my other two is because it wasn't available where I was located at the times of their births!

I have heard good things about it, but I have also heard that it focuses a bit too much on eliminating the pain. I took and really liked "Birthing from the Heart" by Jean Sala in Denton. It's based on the book "Birthing from Within" and focuses on attitude and seeing birth as an empowering experience and not fearing or avoiding the pain but rolling with the experience like a ship on the ocean. Also teaches pain management techniques and educates about the process of course too.

Hi F.,
I was scared to death to give a birth. I was also afraid that I might die during the labor. The Hipnobirthing changed my entire world! If you want to use this technique, I would recommend you to take classes instead of reading the book. Because when you have a teacher, it’s 100 times more beneficial than you reading a book along. My teacher was Nadine Romaine. She is wonderful!!! She is working with all her heart to teach you a Hipnobirthing. My doula later told me that she saw the woman that looked during the labor like she was sleeping. That woman was me!!! :) Contact me if you have any questions or need more information. Good luck to you!!

I totally believe that Hypnobirthing works. But I also want to reassure you that even if you do experience some pain, it is not something you did wrong. I get frustrated with the marketing of systems when it comes to childbirth. Sometimes you receive the message that if you "do it right" and doesn't that kinda implies that if you have a difficult birth, you are at fault? Rather, I think we should appreciate that pain in childbirth is normal, and that we should put all emphasis on allowing the body to cope effectively with the pain. The hypnobirthing can be a beautiful way to do that and I agree it all comes from within. (Mind over Labor)
Keep away from negative messages and for goodness sakes do not repeat the stories you hear, even if you are telling it to a friend the outrageous thing someone told you, the repetition of the negative message makes an impact. For example...the Sonographer tells a woman that the baby's calculated estimated weight is 7.3 lbs at 37 weeks. She goes home and tells her spouse and 5 close friends. They react and she receives the imput in several different voices, now coming from trusted sources..."Wow that is a big baby!" "Are they going to induce?" "Do you think you will need a cesarean?" "My aunt had to have vacuum extraction and she ended up with..." and that freaks her out so then she goes to another source maybe online or a book and this poor brain of hers cannot get a break from the fearful thought of a too big baby, no matter how hard the woman is trying to be a trooper! Hypnobirthing will help you to train your mind to be open to the positive messages (called Affirmations, how to bring about a deep state of relaxation where your brain waves can make the most of the positive messages, and how to dispell negative suggestions...such as providing evidence based research on things like the inaccuracy of sonography in the third trimester!! :o)

Hope this helps! You are strong, safe, beautiful and healthy!
Sincerely,
Marianne

Hi F.,

I used hypnobirthing and I strongly recommend it. Just make sure the person that is with you throughout labor and delivery believe in it completely as well! I had my sister and my friend and they were not completely supportive of my decision. It made it more challenging to stay with the hypno techniques. Congratulations!!

I used the hypnobabies home course with my last birth, my second birth. It definately came in handy since her birth was fast and furious - less than 2 1/2 hours from when I woke up to when I was holding her. :-) You better believe I was tapping into ALL the resources at my disposal to stay in control and the Hypnobabies stuff really helped.

The only thing I regret is that I only about two weeks to practice with the materials before my baby was born. I feel like having more time like you do would have been very beneficial!
