How to Prevent "Poop-xplosions"??

I know that it's fairly common for breastfed babies to have poop leak out of the diaper, but it's happening EVERY day now! I changed to a different size up, thinking that would help. I have a beautiful 4 mo. old daughter, who last week weighed in at 15.5 lbs. I still had her in Pampers Swaddlers, size 1, until a few days ago when they ran out and I now have her in a size 2, same brand.

Sometimes it comes out the bottom, sometimes up the back, sometimes out the top/front. Different everytime. Any advice on how to prevent them or better experience with a different brand??

Thanks in advance!!

What can I do next?

Hi There,
My daughter is about the same weight (15.8) with the same "expressive" poop situation. I have recently changed her to a size 3 Huggies. We have not had a "wet" back since.
Good Luck

Hi A.,

I HATE pampers!!! I had the same problem. LOVE LOVE LOVE Huggies!!!!!!! Haven't had any problems with them. When my daughter leaked (which wasn't often) I went up to a bigger size and the problem stopped. Good luck. Hope that helps.

I usually buy them in bulk at Costco. It costs a bit, but they last me a long time.

My son had a similar problem when he was a very young infant with swaddlers....
however, instead of it being poop he literally leaked pee out of every pamper's swaddler diaper he was ever put in...
however, we switched him to Huggies leak lock diapers... and that problem stopped immediately, he's 21 months now, and still Huggies work the best (I too was a first time mom.. and didn't know what the problem was, I had thought it was the way I changed diapers until my mother-in-law told me to go buy huggies and she was right... sad thing was we ended up having to give away something like $300 worth of diapers because we had stocked up on Pampers before he was born and couldn't use them)
I won't lie and said that we never had a blow-out again... but they came far in between...
so that is my recommendation.. that you switch brands.

Ahhhhhhhh yes, the "blow-outs" as we like to call them. I found that huggies or the Costco brand kirkland (they are made by huggies and cheaper) worked best for my little guy!!!! They have the elastic waist which seemed to work better for my breastfed lil guy! Good luck! It will get MUCH better once your lil one starts on solids :)

BABY NATURECARE DIAPERS!!! You can get them from Target for about $10.... they are amazing! We've NEVER had a poop leak, even when our son started pooping once a week and our pediatrician warned us about the big explosions! Not only are they fabulous diapers because they absorb so much, but they (and their wipes) are 100% bio-degradable! Good for baby, good for planet!! Good luck.

I know Pampers has the size 1-2 in the box, good if you think she's in between the two sizes. Honestly though if it's happening every day & that stretching technique (from another responder) isn't helping, I would look at changing brands.

I'm not really sure what causes it but I have a suspicion. My son's diaper exploded a few times and it was always when my husband changed him, and once when my sister changed him. I also used swaddlers. I think they didn't stretch the diaper out first. You don't have to pull hard but basically just fully unfold it before putting it on the baby. Sometimes the seams get stuck together so if you don't stretch it out first the diaper's gaurd that goes around the legs doesn't sit right. Also make sure the "velcro" tabs are tight enough, so it doesn't go up the back. I tended to get the ones up the back when he had out grown a size so hopefully that one will be gone now that you changed sizes. You may still get a little leek out the side ever now and then but if you change the diaper right after the poop happens it should be minimized. I found that johnsons and johnsons baby shampoo would rinse out the yellow poop color if you got to it right away.

Honestly clothe diaper esp those plastic snappy kind after perfect for it. Or place a vinyl cover over the disposable diaper it wont hold it all but it does help! They sell them in smaller sizes too also check sites and make sure they are good ones, and that people say they like them. I use Gerber brand ones. Also double diaper I would do size 3 for baby then size 4 over works well for watery diarrhea too. Lastly my favorite a lap cover or spill pad esp for the crib so you wont have to change all the bedding! Good luck and hope this helps.

Also remember cheaper is sometimes better in this case! I used white cloud diapers from walmart better then huggies! Also I use the babies r us brand pads for the bed I get the 2 pack and then I can use them in the car seat too! And it does work well for leaks too, just use too if you worry about pee. And if you have that problem then use a diaper doubler they are the same a old skool maxi pads.

I had that problem too with my first son. Then one day I was dipering him in front of a "seasoned mommy", she said "you better open that up all the way or he will poop out the side". I thought I was opening it up all the way, turns out there are these "poopy cathcy things" inside the diaper. Open those up all the way. Other then that try a diffrent brand. I find huggies have the best "poopy cathcy" things.

i know youve already got plenty of advice on this buti just thought i would put in my two cents!

every kid is different! they make all these diapers one way but all babies are shaped differently! you just gotta make sure its a snug comfortable fit diaper. also i noticed, with all three of my babies, that they only explode when they already have peed the diaper then go and poo too. cause its only got so much absorbency power!

if all else fails, stick to yellow and green (or dark colored) clothing!!

good luck!

Hi A.,
My daughter is almost 10 months old now. She is breastfed also and had the same problem at your daughter's age. We used Huggies and also Costco diapers and although we still had some leakage issues it wasn't every day so maybe they'd work better for you. Also, you probably already have been told, but be encouraged that once she starts solids at 6 months (or when you decide to start them) that her poop will be more solid and less leaky. I hope this helps. Good luck!

I didn't have this problem with my son, however I had a friend who did and I cant remember what she said if Pampers was good for boys and Huggies for girls... or the otherway around. I would just test different brands to see if they make a difference. BTW it doesn't last forever but my son had a case of the stomach flu 2wks ago and had the runniest poopy I had ever experienced - he's almost 3 now and not quite potty trained!

It's all about positioning. If you've got her in a carseat most of the day, it comes out and goes right up the back or out the sides. If you notice she is going, try to hold her so that she isn't sitting. It won't fix every issue, but it helped a lot for us.

My daughter is just a bit bigger than yours weight wise and we put her in size 3 Cruisers (the equivalent of the Swaddlers as they get bigger). We always know it is time for the bigger size when we have a poop explosion. Try the size up which would be 2/3 (you can't always find them but Diapers.com carries them). Hopefully that will help. Otherwise, the others do have good advice - it is trial and error.

My son and daughter were both breastfed babies, my son for 18 months and my daughter currently breastfeeds. I use Huggies and have had great sucess! Buy a pack and see what happens, it can't hurt to try!
P.S. When my son was potty training I tried Pampers feel n'learn and they fell apart, ripping on the sides. The Pull-ups brand never did that! Congrats on your new little girl!

the only thing you can do is try different brands of diapers. I found that I liked the pampers baby dry best, but they still leak. I think they are more absorbent than the swaddlers with that runny poop. A lot of people I know swear by huggies, though.

It's really just an unfortunate part of the beginning; I found I just had to make sure I had an extra set of clothes in the diaper bag at all times.

My experience is that they need to move to the next size a little before the weight limit of the previous size. At 15.5lbs you may actually want to try size three, we moved my son to 3s at 16 lbs and it made a big difference. Also, I prefer Huggies to the Pampers as they have a nice stretchy back panel that truly hugs their back, keeping the poop in as opposed to the Pampers which even at the bigger size still let it all leak out the top.

good luck!

My son will be 4 months in a few days but is but bigger than your daughter is and when he was that size I put him in the Pampers swaddlers size 2-3 (you might have to visit a few stores before you find them, no everyone carries this size). They have a little more room. I would put the diaper on so that it went up high in back and was snug around the legs and be sure to pull out the ruffle from around the leg, sometimes that gets tucked and can cause a leg leak. A lot of times his poop would go almost to the top of the diaper and stop just in time. But before I switched him, he was leaking all the time. He's getting close to 17 lbs now and I am putting him in Pampers baby dry size 3. The only difference in the diaper is they don't have the mesh liner which kind of helps but he is still exclusively breastfed and we have only minimal leaks, only around one leg a drop or two will escape sometimes. I know the labels say they don't need a diaper that big, but no one else can tell and it has stopped the leaks so it worked for us!

I like the other notes, but wanted to add that it is worth trying different brands of diapers. My 3.5 year old had the problem with every diaper except Pampers Swaddlers. Your baby might be better fitted with a different brand. I am experimenting with cheaper brands for the one month old now but he seems to be a Pampers baby, too. I am convinced different kids are shaped differently!

Hi, A..

I have a 10-month-old who was strictly breastfed and the poop accidents happen on occasion still, regardless of what diaper you use.

I have found that with the Pampers Swaddlers, if you make sure you snuggly close the diaper and ensure that the ruffles around the legs are out (oftentimes, when you put the diaper on, they end up folded into the interior of the diaper), it helps prevent the leaks. If the ruffles are folded in, I've found that the diaper will leak without fail. For some reason, there's less chance of that happening if they're out.

Also, I found that the diaper will leak if there was a lot of urine in the diaper beforehand. My mom would often wait until my daughter's diaper was full (which I have spoken to her about because it's caused diaper rash) and it was the cause of major "poop-xplosions." Sometimes, even just a little wetness and a huge wet poop will overfill the diaper. I noticed that when we change her diaper more frequently, even with just a tiny bit of wetness, we've avoided the big messes.

I hope you figure out a solution that works for you.

Good luck!

E.

When your daughter starts eating solids, her BMs will become more solid also. My son, who was breast-fed, had "blowouts" almost daily until he started on solids. We learned very quickly to pack extra clothing, diapers, and plastic bags whenever we went anywhere.

Each baby is also built differently. Experiment and find out which diapers work best for your baby. A lot of my friends recommended Huggies, which turned out to be the worst for my son. He was a very thin baby (and is still a thin child); Huggies were too loose in the legs. We found that the generic Commissary diapers (I work on an overseas US military base) were better during the day and Pampers or Luvs at night.

I've never really had that problem with both my children, despite large poops of all textures... with both of them, I used Huggies, and both were breastfed. I have a boy and a girl.

And yes, as the previous respondent said, open up the diaper completely, stretch out the diaper first...and the side seams (ie: the elasticized edges), then put on the diaper... put the diaper under her bottom and then with the front portion...stretch it out toward you and pull it taut...and THEN bring it up to against her waist and fasten the tabs as snugly as snug as it will go. The only time I'd have problems with the diaper leaking is when my Mom or Hubby would put on their diaper... like the other respondent experienced as well.

The only other exception to poop leaking out, was if my children were sick and had diarrhea.

Good luck,
~Susan

I know what your going through. I went through it with my little ones. It will get better once they are introduced to solid foods. The only thing I could do was recognize the poop face and when I did take them to the changing table to let them finish. This at least stopped the leaking onto all the rugs baby toys and what ever else it happend to get on to. I used the swaddlers too and for the most part they worked really well.

Maybe put a plastic diaper cover over her as well that might catch the leaks too.

Good luck and don't worry the explosions don't last forever.

That's a very familiar and frustrating problem. I have had three babies now, and all three were breastfed. Almost on schedule, they all started with the explosions out of the diaper at around 3 months or so. I think at that age they are producing more and with greater force and it's still so liquid (sorry to be graphic). I tried different diapers, making sure to put the back up as much as possible, etc, but it always happened!
The good news is that as soon as they start solids (I started mine at around 5 1/2 months), it drastically reduces the frequency of this. The poop is heavier and while not solid, it just doesn't "explode" in the same way.
Sorry I don't have any real answers, but just to let you know it doesn't last for long! : )

Hi A. -

I often had the same problem and only way into the diaper game did someone say to me, "Well, it has to go SOMEWHERE." Meaning, I was putting the diapers on too snugly. I'd fit them up around my little girl as close as possible without making them pinch, thinking I'd avoid leaks that way. If I'd left a pocket, there would have been more space for the poop to collect.

I realize with a very liquid poop that won't help, but for the more solid kind it should make a difference. Hope that helps.

All the best,
Colleen

As people note below, when it leaks, if the diaper was really full and it leaked, probably she needs the next size up. Huggies worked well for us. And very important, as Sandi notes below, make sure there isn't a piece of diaper folded over incorrectly. You really do have to smooth out the diaper and make sure the ruffles are all out and not folded up or bunched up. Buy the large lap pads at Babies R Us and put them in the crib, playpen or wherever you have leaks. Buy several. This way, you won't be washing sheets so much and if they don't come clean, you can toss them and buy new ones.

I found using cloth diapers helped this, but if that isn't an option, you could get some of those Gerber plastic covers that are meant for going over cloth diapers or I think a lot of people use them over underwear during potty training when out and about. That might help contain some of the explosion for you!

A few quick things: 1. You might have to experiment with brands, and keep experimenting as your child grows. A friend of mine who is a former nanny and also a mom told me to use the Huggies Supreme and the Huggies regular ones alternately. Use the Supremes when baby first goes up a size, then switch to the regulars when those start getting snug. But I used Pampers (Swaddlers as a newborn, then Cruisers) until my daughter was really walking, because it seemed like the Huggies stayed on better then, but before that I was happy with the Pampers. Every kid is shaped differently; don't get too attached to one brand or type and when you aren't sure exactly which one is best, buy the smallest pack. Also, don't put too much stock in the size they list on the package; we constantly found we were buying a size bigger than what the package suggested. I think it was because my daughter was long and lean, and they were basing the size on weight alone.

2. Get those little rubber pads covered in flannel (I think they're called lap pads). Put one or two in the carseat and anywhere else the blowouts have occured, just to protect the fabric. You can find these at Target or Kmart in the baby section, usually around where the cloth diapers are. You only need a couple as they are washable. These saved our carseat many a time.

3. NEVER leave the house without at least one full change of clothes, plenty of wipes and plastic bags for the diapers and any soiled clothes! (I used produce bags for this lovely task. Make sure you rinse the clothes well before stashing them.) Also, onesies do help keep the diapers in place. Just make sure they're not too snug.

4. Hang in there. This stage doesn't last forever, and it's a sign of a healthy digestive system!

And good for you for breastfeeding! Keep up the good work.

Try different brands - My skinny kids did best with the costco brand (kirkland) and Huggies were the WORST!! I think the best brand for you depends on the shape of your baby.
