How to Prevent "Poop-xplosions"??

I know that it's fairly common for breastfed babies to have poop leak out of the diaper, but it's happening EVERY day now! I changed to a different size up, thinking that would help. I have a beautiful 4 mo. old daughter, who last week weighed in at 15.5 lbs. I still had her in Pampers Swaddlers, size 1, until a few days ago when they ran out and I now have her in a size 2, same brand.

Sometimes it comes out the bottom, sometimes up the back, sometimes out the top/front. Different everytime. Any advice on how to prevent them or better experience with a different brand??

Thanks in advance!!

What can I do next?

Hi There,
My daughter is about the same weight (15.8) with the same "expressive" poop situation. I have recently changed her to a size 3 Huggies. We have not had a "wet" back since.
Good Luck

Hi A.,

I HATE pampers!!! I had the same problem. LOVE LOVE LOVE Huggies!!!!!!! Haven't had any problems with them. When my daughter leaked (which wasn't often) I went up to a bigger size and the problem stopped. Good luck. Hope that helps.

I usually buy them in bulk at Costco. It costs a bit, but they last me a long time.

My son had a similar problem when he was a very young infant with swaddlers....
however, instead of it being poop he literally leaked pee out of every pamper's swaddler diaper he was ever put in...
however, we switched him to Huggies leak lock diapers... and that problem stopped immediately, he's 21 months now, and still Huggies work the best (I too was a first time mom.. and didn't know what the problem was, I had thought it was the way I changed diapers until my mother-in-law told me to go buy huggies and she was right... sad thing was we ended up having to give away something like $300 worth of diapers because we had stocked up on Pampers before he was born and couldn't use them)
I won't lie and said that we never had a blow-out again... but they came far in between...
so that is my recommendation.. that you switch brands.

Try Huggies. They work a lot better than Pampers because of the elastic waist. No more poop explosions for me! :)

My experience is that they need to move to the next size a little before the weight limit of the previous size. At 15.5lbs you may actually want to try size three, we moved my son to 3s at 16 lbs and it made a big difference. Also, I prefer Huggies to the Pampers as they have a nice stretchy back panel that truly hugs their back, keeping the poop in as opposed to the Pampers which even at the bigger size still let it all leak out the top.

good luck!

A few quick things: 1. You might have to experiment with brands, and keep experimenting as your child grows. A friend of mine who is a former nanny and also a mom told me to use the Huggies Supreme and the Huggies regular ones alternately. Use the Supremes when baby first goes up a size, then switch to the regulars when those start getting snug. But I used Pampers (Swaddlers as a newborn, then Cruisers) until my daughter was really walking, because it seemed like the Huggies stayed on better then, but before that I was happy with the Pampers. Every kid is shaped differently; don't get too attached to one brand or type and when you aren't sure exactly which one is best, buy the smallest pack. Also, don't put too much stock in the size they list on the package; we constantly found we were buying a size bigger than what the package suggested. I think it was because my daughter was long and lean, and they were basing the size on weight alone.

2. Get those little rubber pads covered in flannel (I think they're called lap pads). Put one or two in the carseat and anywhere else the blowouts have occured, just to protect the fabric. You can find these at Target or Kmart in the baby section, usually around where the cloth diapers are. You only need a couple as they are washable. These saved our carseat many a time.

3. NEVER leave the house without at least one full change of clothes, plenty of wipes and plastic bags for the diapers and any soiled clothes! (I used produce bags for this lovely task. Make sure you rinse the clothes well before stashing them.) Also, onesies do help keep the diapers in place. Just make sure they're not too snug.

4. Hang in there. This stage doesn't last forever, and it's a sign of a healthy digestive system!

And good for you for breastfeeding! Keep up the good work.

Not so much a diaper thing as it is just what newborns do, but you knew that already. I found using cloth diapers helped this, but if that isn't an option, you could get some of those Gerber plastic covers that are meant for going over cloth diapers or I think a lot of people use them over underwear during potty training when out and about. That might help contain some of the explosion for you!

Try Huggies - a much better diaper!!

There is no diaper that will prevent this from happening. It is part of the deal...explosions will happen...and just when you loaded all the kids in the car...

Hi A.. When this happened to me I switched to Huggies Supreme. The elastic is great. Of course, there was still a few accidents but not nearly as many. I thought I needed to stick with Pampers because that's what the hospital gave me. I now prefer Huggies Supreme.

As people note below, when it leaks, if the diaper was really full and it leaked, probably she needs the next size up. Huggies worked well for us. And very important, as Sandi notes below, make sure there isn't a piece of diaper folded over incorrectly. You really do have to smooth out the diaper and make sure the ruffles are all out and not folded up or bunched up. Buy the large lap pads at Babies R Us and put them in the crib, playpen or wherever you have leaks. Buy several. This way, you won't be washing sheets so much and if they don't come clean, you can toss them and buy new ones.
