Hi Mamas,

I need some tips on how to potty train our 17 month old boy. Our boy is showing signs that he is somewhat ready since he sees poo poo and tee tee and when he goes. I have taken him into the bathroom with me so he can sit on the potty while I do. I would like to go ahead and start some training but the problem is that during the week we aren't with him enough to be consistent about taking him to the potty every time we go. Weekday mornings are busy with getting him up, diaper changed, fed and then off to daycare and then we have him from 5-7pm before he goes to sleep. Any suggestions about ways to introduce the concept and get him started? Is it useful to just focus on it on the weekends? I know it's early for a boy he just seems ready to start. thanks!!

What can I do next?

I can understand being axious to train- I know we are all ready to get rid of the diapers. But unfortunately when you work you need the support of your child care provider to train with you and at your son's age I don't imagine he's even in a room with other kids who are training so it may be difficult. My best suggestion would be to talk to daycare and see if they will consider taking him to the potty on a regular basis if you put him in pull-ups. Pull-ups may not be the best way but I know a lot of daycare's require them.

Good luck!

I worked in a daycare with children at exactly that age. Since some of the kids in his room might also be ready to start "learning" about it at least, they should be able to take him. A lot of kids wanted to "go potty" too when the others went. This group approach can be even more helpful than just your weekend work. Your little guy may or may not be ready for complete training, but if he's interested encourage him to do so as often as possible.

have a conversation with yur daycare provider. They should be more than willing (as long as you provide changes of clothing and other appropriate tools) to help you by continuing this process throughout the day, while your child is in their care.

However; for intorductory purposes you could start with just weekends and evenings, but keep in mind, once he starts getting into it, you will still need to have the conversation with the day care in order for him to progress.

In this day and age most parents work. But, these tips will help you with your problem. 1. don't buy anymore diapers buy pull ups! The longer he is in diapers the longer he will act as he is in diapers. 2. Take him to the restroom like every 45 min when you are at home until he gets used to going. 3. Tell the school he is attending about your plan and they will continue this at school, but only if he is pull ups. Boys are usually harder than girls for some reason so be patient. it may take about 2 weeks to really get him trained. my daughter was about the same age as your son when i started (she's about 22 months now) and it took me about 4 days.
