How Old Did You Start Styling Your Daughters Hair? My Daughter Is Only 3 - Columbus,OH

My 3 year old daughter just finally got her 2nd haircut. It seems like it took forever for it to finally grow in. It is only at the length of about her shoulders or so. Anyways, she has half curly hair (the back and bottom half) and half straight hair (the top half). The bottom half goes into gorgeous ringletts but the top is just straight stick. Well, the hair cut lady put moose (Sp?) in her hair and cut the straight hair so that it almost falls into the curly hair. I didn't like the idea of puting styling products in a 3 year olds hair. I figured I would just wash it out once we got home and let her hair naturally dry. Well, it is back to looking straight on top and curly in back. Would you "style" your 3 years hair everyday? I know it "looks" better styled but just the thought of putting product in her hair everyday just seems crazy for only being 3 years old?

Thanks!

Update - Yes, she literally has straight hair on top that has absolutely no curl to it and the back/bottom half is thick course curly hair. She has two different hair types. thanks.

What can I do next?

I wouldn't put styling products in her hair every day , as a treat when she has had a cut it ok , but daily I would avoid it. My 4 1/2 yr old has quite fine hair , so we just do different things with it each day to make it look different , for example: 1 ponytail , next day 2 pigtails or braids , some days I will put the top section in a ponytail and leave the rest down. If you go to somewhere like Claires accesories you can buy some really nice hair clips and alice bands which adds to the variety.

I would delay putting anything on her hair as long as you can. My daughter was like that but she always had knots. I used a child's detangler after her wash and only washed her hair once a week for the longest time. Blow dryers and straightners really damage hair and their hair at this age is so soft and fine. She didn't start worrrying about her hair until middle school. WHen she did physical activities she always washed her afterwards. Enjoy you 3 year old for as long as you can. They grow up too fast and then you miss those younger years.

Personally, I would chop it off where the straight part ends if you don't like the half curly half straight look. Seems like too much work to style a young girl's hair every day. Good luck!

As a stylist and mommy, I love dolling up our 4 year old. She has very curly hair and when she was younger her hair was similar to what you are describing. You don't always have to put product to style her hair. Sometimes we do braids, pony tails, half pony tails, side pony tails, headbands, bandanas, barrets, and hats. If her hair is up I don't use product. I only use product if her hair is down to control the curls and spring up the straight parts. Her hair didn't start to get "all curly" until she was 4, now it's curly everywhere!

If pigtails, ponytails, and braids count as styling...I do my 3 year old daughter's hair everyday. Only use hair spray about once a week just to hold those little short fly a ways around her face.

I love fixing her hair everyday...one of my favorite parts of the morning.

My daughter's hair is exactly the same! She's 5 so she still takes baths at night so normally we don't put any product in it. But if she does take a bath or shower in the morning then I do put moose in it. It just makes those beautiful ringletts stand out! It's maybe twice a month. On the other days, sometimes I pull the straight top layer up in a pony tail so the curls underneath show. Mostly, I just brush out the curls. Today she's wearing two braids. I think its fine to put childrens' moose in it occasionally.

I never put products in my daughter's hair or blow dry it or straighten it. I always fix it, though. She has kind of wavy hair and it grows forward so I can't just let her wear it down. It is either half up/ half down, in pigtails, pigtails braided, pony tail, braids, two buns, or two small braids on the sides with the rest down. And of course there are always bows. I don't put anything in my son's hair either....I figure they will do that on their own soon enough :-)

My 3 year old daughter has exactly the same kind of hair! We had it layered and that took care of part of the problem, but I DO put product in when we are going out somewhere. She loves having her hair fussed with!

My daughter has very fine hair. I usually put it back somehow otherwise it's in her face. I grew her bangs out. I have used water on it a lot to keep it down but when that does not work, I have sprayed it with hair spray. But that is about it. Usually it's just put up, no products.

My daughter came out with a full head of hair and she has been in pig-tails since 7 months old, long pig-tails. I've been putting product in her hair since about 9 months to try to control it and keep it out of her eyes. I got a product at Sweet and Sassy that they claim to be an all-natural product. I only use the product when I leave her hair down. Most of the time though I put it in a ponytail or pig-tails. I know what you mean about the straight and curly hair. My daughter has the same thing. The back is curly and the rest is straight. Pig-Tails are great because it's harder to notice the difference in her hair.

I would not style it every day the product can do some damage to it...make sure your NOT washing her hair everyday...I have a soon to be 4 year old step daugher and her mom sprays a ton of hairspray in her hair every single day so when she is with me as badly as I want to style it I dont I let it go just to give it a break...

My daughter is 4 1/2 and her hair has never really been truly cut, just trimmed. So it's pretty long, and some curls. Most days I just put her hair in a ponytail. Occasionally I will do it a little different, maybe with 2 or 3 "pig tails." But my main goal is just to keep her hair out of her face! I don't style it or use any product on it while fixing it just to make it pretty. Just try to be practical :)

My personal opinion is no.

My poor daughter has a gorgeous head of almost black hair. She's 2. She has two cowlicks, though, one on each side of her head that push her hair forward and make it get in her eyes. She's constantly pushing it out of the way, so I've always had it back in some kind of pony tail to make her more comfortable.

I'd accommodate. Chances are, it will work itself out as it grows out more.
As long as she's not bothered by it, I'd let it be. She'll have the rest of her life to hate her hair and wish she had someone else's like the rest of us.

First, let me say: LMAO! That's my daughter's hair!!! Straight as can be like a friggin pancake on the top of her head. Then at the very bottom (around mid neck) it starts to curl & wave. I say it kinda reminds me of Florence Henderson. Only a little bit. Anyway, to answer your question... I don't love the idea of putting product in my daughter's hair. She'll be 3 in October. That's just a little too grown up & beauty-pagaentish for me. I usually do hair ties. Pig tails or the little Pebbles Flinstone sprout on top. Sometimes even just a plain ponytail in the back. Good luck!

I'm not sure what you mean by half curly and half straight. My granddaughter's hair is curly. At that age, her hair was all close to one length but the weight of the hair pulls the top part straighter. Her hair has always been very curly and so it's never been stick straight but if your daughter's hair is a softer curl then the weight could make the top half stick straight.

I also don't understand cutting the straight hair until it almost falls into the curly. Why not leave it all about the same length. When curly hair is professionally cut they taper the ends so all the hair isn't the exact same length. Otherwise it's too heavy.

Are you saying that as her hair grows in it's growing in straight? or literally the hair growing out of the top of her head is straight and the rest is growing in curly?

Anyway, putting in product everyday isn't practical and could back fire when she's older and wants her hair to be perfect.

If the style doesn't look good natural, I suggest getting a different style. Also, if it's long enough, putting in barrettes might help. If the top is straight because of the weight of the long hair, a shorter cut might help.

my daughter is 3 and I style her hair everyday and have from the time she was about 12 months. When she was little like 12 months to 2 she had wavy hair with some curl so I would put gel and hair spray in to make it look nice and styled. Now that she is older she has no curl and just a little wave. I flat iron it so it is nice and straight and then do it with flowers or bows. I don't think there needs to be an age when it's ok to do your kids hair. If she looks nicer when you use products in her hair then go for it :)

I would pull the top part back into a top/crown area pony tail and let the curls go crazy or part the top section and pull it over to the side for a barrette. I might even go ahead later, maybe in elementary school think about a spot perm professionally done of course until you see how it looks and if you like it. Then you could try doing it your self.

Google hairstyles for toddlers and see what might spark your creativity too.

I personally don't feel i have the time to do this. So i would go with a super cute short bob or something, but other than the hassle you could probably find some more organic kinds of products if that was your concern.

I don't put any product in my daughters hair...but I do braid it every possible way...everyday! Maybe that would work for you until her hair gets a little longer and evens out a bit?
