How Do You Store Your Fresh Veggies and Fruits?

After washing and cutting up some celery, cauliflower, and broccoli today for my kids to have for their snack I realized I have no idea how to store this stuff so it has a good chance at staying fresh. I always have bad luck with lettuce going bad in 2-3 days. What about fruits like grapes, berries, and cherries? We keep our oranges and apples out on the kitchen counter, is that bad?

What can I do next?

I used to keep celery in water, but found that cutting off the ends and just wrapping it in aluminum foil keeps it fresh for ages. I don't wash it first. I think cauliflower and broccoli do well cut and put into baggies. For lettuce, I wash the leaves in really cold water, then lay them out single layer in between paper towels. Then I roll it all up to absorb as much water as possible, take the leaves out of the towels, put them in a ziploc and push out as much air as possible. It can keep for over a week that way for me. I have heard about keeping the leaves in the paper towels, so I think I am going to try that way too. Grapes and cherries I just wash and keep in a bowl in the frige. If I get berries, I do not wash them until ready to eat and just leave them in their container until I use them. I always keep oranges and apples in the frige because we like to eat those cold and I feel the apples stay good much longer that way and stay crispy.

Fruits and veggies last longer if they are stored "dirty and naked", meaning do not wash them until ready to eat, and take off all that packaging!

I purchased the Fridgesmart system from Tupperware as well. Now, it is expensive, about $80 for a set of 4 containers. But It has special air vents that help keep produce fresh longer. My lettuce stays fresh in it for up to 4 weeks. It is a must-have for berries, mushrooms, and well, everything.

Also, keep apples separate from other fruits and veggies. If you store them in the same container as carrots, the carrots will get a funky taste, also apples speed up ripening in other fruits.

Here is a link that has a complete list of how to store fruits and veggies. I never waste produce anymore, I wish I had known all this info years ago :)

I've found that apples seem to keep longer in you keep them in the fridge, but there's nothing wrong with leaving them on the counter.

I bought some of those green containers that are suppose to help keep fruits and veggies fresher longer. They do work (but not as well as advertised).

Cut up broccoli does well in a zip lock bag, squeeze out the air.

Another little thing that helps is placing a paper towel in the container/ ziplock/ tupperware. When I store celery, I either place it in a container of water, as the other poster suggested or place wet paper towel in a ziplock with the stalks. This also works with carrots that have been prepared. It's certainly not a miracle fix but it will give you a few precious days! Hope this helps :)

Tupperware has this container that I use for lettuce, it last me almost 2 weeks!!! Its round and tall, and has 2 buttons that let in/out moist. I'll see if I can find what its called, best investment ever (Im not into gadgets!)

Fridgesmart Large Round its only $22.50!

on a side note I love love love these clips from either Pampered Chef or Ikea, they keep snacks, crackers, chips fresh for more then a month! I think their called Twixit! Clips.

I keep cut celery in a container of water with a lid. Brocolli and cauliflower in seperate baggies. Grapes and berries in an open bowl unwashed until ready to eat. Oranges in the fridge drawer, apples in a bowl on counter.

This is just what I do...doesn't mean it's right, but it works for me!

Tupperware has a line of containers that are called stayfresh containers I think. They really really work. Bananas will last for over a week, salads for about a week, etc. Very good product and worth the money
