Hi Moms!
I'm trying to teach my bottle fed baby to drink from a sippy cup. She thinks it's just one of her toys and has no interest in discovering its real purpose. Does anyone have any tricks that have worked for their child in helping them drink from a sippy cup? I would prefer not using juice if I can.

I tried several different brand sippy cups with my son and he was not interested in using any. So, I thought: "Oh well." And I taught him h/t drink out of a glass which was a little messy. One of my friends sent me the throw away sippy cups. I tried one out and he drank from it right away! These are the only ones he will use...
I used water and let my son play with it for a few months starting about when you are. By the time he was 12 months old he was using it like a pro! We also pretended we were drinking from it and would hand it to him and he would try to drink from it! You're on the right track. Keep on, and good luck!
The only way I was ever able to get my children interested in a sippy cup was to put something different in it than their bottle. I am not saying juice is the answer, but maybe flavored water? I ended up starting with V8 splash because of all the extra fruits and vegetables in it, I figured it was better than regular juice. Both my kids are hooked on the V8 now and I feel they are getting enough vitamins daily!
I know they sell sippy cups with a straw in them that will not leak walmart sells them they aare pretty neat cups and you could give her that and she could start playing with that and she will learn from there i know my little one learned from watching us drink pop from a cup and we would offer it to him and he just picked that up one day on his own .good luck
Demonstrate how to do it. You take a drink, make a BIG production of how good it is. Then give the cup to her to drink. Even if she doesn't get anything, still say YUM!!! That's good!!! Gerber makes something called Fruit Splashers. It's like flavored water (I think). That may help. I don't think it has as much sugar in it as juice. Just keep trying. That's really the best thing. She'll get it eventually! Try some different cups too. My dd hated the Nuby cups and would only drink out of cuts with a hard spout or a straw. Practice, practice, practice!!!
There are simple cups that have a slit on the lid. They are even sold at dollar stores. These worked best for me. This will train the little one that the water will come out. I was also told to start with water, not juice or milk. It seemed to work for me.They are fairly inexpensive and convert into a drinking cup later on.
Does your daughter like things that make noise? You can try to buy her a sippy cup that makes noise. I got my son one and he really enjoyed it. Some children do not like to drink from certain cups. My son was the same way. He did not like it because of the way the cup was made. Maybe there is something about the cups that your daughter does not like. For my son it was the top of the sippy cup where he would drink from it. It could also be that maybe she wants to drink indepentantly on her own. Some children do not like to drink from sippy cups. You can also see what your child is interested in and get her that kind of a sippy cup. When my son played with his drink I would pretent that I was going to drink it. He liked that and it encouraged him to drink his drink.
Children learn by immitating. set her in highchair or hold her. Let her see you take drink and make sure she hears you say it is good. She will get interested in it if you make it a game. But on the other hand if she isnt ready for a cup she will not try. If that is the case give it a rest for a couple weeks and try again. Here is another suggestion.... When you feed her have cup ready for her. Hold her as if you were going to give her a bottle. And slowly introduce the cup that way. If she still doesnt want anything to do with it you may need to try a different style cup. I have noticed with my grandson he had trouble with most cups except the ones that had the spout that was longer most like a nipple. Be patient with it. There is no rule that says she has to drink from a cup by time she is a yr old. Dont push her. Let her be little as long as you can because they grow up so fast.

Buy the Nubby sippy cups they have the silicone tops That are similar to the bottle nipples. They worked for my youngest child. I Just gave her milk in her cup I got rid of all of the bottles and then once she got thirsty she tried it. I guess I got lucky but I think the Nubby Sippy cups help out a lot.
Wal-Mart sells them they don't cost to much for the cups.

my daughter started by drinking water from an adult glass when she was 5 months sort of by accident but she has been off the bottle since 11 months and loves the sippy cup and still loves drinking from my glass things like milk or a little crystal lite lemonade or ice water it is worth a try to see what she will do my daughter thought it was fun to be a big girl and it worked really well she gave up the bottle on her own
walmart here selss sippy cups with silicone tops so it's shaped like a sippy cup lid but feel like a bottle, they leak a little if they are tossed around but not bad and like a bottle they can be chewed then they leak bad, but it worked really well for all my kids and the ones i babysit for.
