How does he come home with an assignment on a program? You mean he has it saved to a disk and is supposed to edit it? This makes no sense. A school doesn't require you own expensive software unless he's in college, in which case you shouldn't even be helping him.

Ask his teacher.

If you already have a recent version of Microsoft Office, it may include a free trial of Publisher that you aren't aware is right there in your Office package. Did you look, if you have Office? There are free trials of certain programs included when you buy Office.

If not, did you go to the Microsoft web site (not some other site, Microsoft's official web site)? I would check there, and search on the web site for "Publisher free trial."

Is this edited assignment due tomorrow? If so, I would let your son just deal with the consequences if you cannot find a trial of Publisher that works tonight. I would also make him responsible for telling the teacher that you do not have Publisher at home and he (your son) will have to do any further edits at school. This is a chance for him to learn not to assume that he has access to the same tools at home that he has at school. (And for the teachers to learn the same thing if they somehow assume that every family has every program that's in use at school.)

Why do you say "I am unable to do so"? Are you doing the editing or is he? This is his homework -- I hope you are not planning to edit this yourself in any way, Publisher or not.

Try OpenOffice. Free shareware equivalent to Microsoft.

If that doesn't work than I would recommend you try your local library.

Maybe your son should suffer the consequence of not completing an assignment on time in class?

Teachers give plenty of time to work in the classroom on assignments, especially those which need special research and editing from school computers.

You're not doing your child any favors by rescuing and teachers are keen on who is rescued or not.

I disagree with the moms who claim that schools don't require kids to have expensive software at home. My kids have been bringing home projects using MS Word and Excel for years, and in no way are they given sufficient time during class to finish. It has been an ongoing annoyance because my kids work on an old Macintosh that won't run a current version of MS Office. That means that their work doesn't always look the same at school as it did at home.

Google (Google Drive) has a Publisher equivalent. And it's free. My students use it all the time.

I would have your son ask his teacher if he could use a web based program like glogster or one the teacher would suggest instead of publisher. I would also suggest if he has a school google account, if he could use the drawing document instead. Then he can open it up both at home and school. Unfortunately publisher document won't upload into google docs yet (which is a big bummer). Good luck.
