Honda Pilot

We are currently looking to buy a new car and are currently looking at the Honda Pilot. I was wondering if anyone out there drives one and what your experience with it is. I'm looking at whether it's big enough for a family of four, what gas mileage you really get and how it has held up (wind noise, repairs, etc).

I had pretty much decided to get one until I read some customer reports that said it's not all that great. Now I'm confused. Also, if anyone loves their mid-sized SUV, let me know what you are driving!

Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your information!! It has been a great help in making my decision. I didn't mention before, but I'm currently driving an Expedition and want to downsize, but not too much. I have driven the Pilot, 4Runner, Highlander (Toyota), and the Hyndai Veracruz. So far the Pilot is my favorite. I plan on driving the GMC Acadia (I think that's the name) and the Yukon before I make a final decision, but I'm pretty sure that we will end up with the Pilot. Knowing that y'all are happy with the Pilot makes my decision easier, THANKS!! Also, thank you to those who offered salesmen. We live in McKinney and are using that dealership. The guy we have been dealing with has given what we consider a good deal (same as someone mentioned), so I think we'll stick with him!!!

We bought a Pilot about a year ago and I love it. I have two children that sit in the middle. They are both in car seats and it leaves room for another. The third row is very convenient but is really only comfortable for children or very petite individuals. Also, if the third row is up there isn't much storage space. It gets great gas mileage especially compared to the other SUV's out there.
Hope this helps!

I have a Chrysler Pacifica, and I love it. I love how it has the 3rd row of seats, because at times, we have 4 children. When we don't have 4 children, the trunk space is amazing! It gets pretty good gas mileage too. We average about 400 miles per fill-up. It has the little buttons on the back of the steering wheel to control the radio and/or cd plus volume. I love it!

Hope that helps,
A.

Hi T.!
I just got a new car a few days ago; I got a GMC Acadia. I love it! Its a crossover vehicle and it has 3rd row. Yet the vehicle does not seem to big for me. I came from a Ford Escape so I didn't want to go to big. Plus you can get it with lots of extras! I got a DVD player in mine and my 3 year old and 15 mth old love it!

I love my Pilot. The 3rd row has come in really handy... we have fit 4 adults and 2 carseats in there. When you don't use the 3rd row it's a regular size SUV cargo room. I like that it drives smoothly like a car, instead of jumpy like a truck. It helps because sometimes I get a little sick in my parent's Explorer (drives like a truck). Hondas are such great cars. I would definitely go to a dealership and drive one. We looked at the Toyota, Nissan and a couple other lines, and I loved the Pilot. I also like how everything is layed out inside.

We love ours! I think the gas mileage is fine and road noise isn't a problem. Aside from regular maintenance, we've had no repairs -- it's about 2.5 years old.

We really didn't shop around, very much a Honda family, but we did look at the Toyota line. Generally, what you get standard in a Pilot is considered optional equipment in the Highlander. The third row in the Pilot is a bit small but fits an 11 year old (4'8"), a 16 year old (5'7") and myself (5'2") with ease. The space is nice when you fold down the third row, too. We've carried landscaping stones, particle board, etc. with no problems.

We'd definitely buy a Pilot again.

We just purchased a used 2006 pilot from Carmax. It came with the navigation system and only had 9000 miles on it. My husband loves it. We upgraded because we will be having our 3rd baby in 4 years next month. His old Camry could not fit all three car seats and I don't like to let him drive my Honda Minivan (he is 5'11" and I am 5'2") I also like that now when he goes to home depot to get stuff for the yard he doesn't have to mess up my car!!
He had adjusted well to driving an SUV and really likes it. Hope this helps.

I have a friend who has had her Pilot for about 2 years and she still absolutely LOVES it!

I have a Nissan Murano and I couldn't be happier. I have a family of 4. My husband is a relatively big guy and he fits comfortably. He loves it also. My kids are 3 1/2 and 15 months and a third person can fit inbetween them in the back very easily. Not sure where you are located but the best sales man EVER is at Bankston Nissan (dealership not the fandiest but the people are fabulous) and his name is Sam Posey.

I love my Honda Pilot. A little expensive to gas (around 50$) but if you're looking into a SUV, it's going to be expensive anyway... I think, if I'm not mistaken we do 20 / 22 gas miles on the highway.

It's a very comfortable SUV with many amenities I find useful. Like the cell phone holder in the arm rest in the middle in front. Lots of room in the back. More than enough for a family of 4. We had visitors last Christmas and drove around town with 6 adults and 1 kid in the car. Everybody was comfortable.

The third row is great as it folds all the way down and let you have a huge trunk!

In the past, we had a CR-V for 5 years and never had to have repairs done (other than normal inspections and used stuff). We had our Pilot for almost 2 years and absolutly no problems again.

The drive is quiet and no loud wind noise.

I'd have another one anytime!

I drive the Mazda CX-9. It's a crossover and I love it. All of the room I used to have in my Blazer, but it rides like a car and has a 3rd row that comfortably holds 2 passengers. I highly recommend it. As far as gas mileage it's about the same as the blazer 20 - 23mpg. Good luck with your search.

Sounds like everyone loves the Honda Pilot! I thought I would let you know that I love my Toyota 4Runner!! I have an older car (2002) but my sister has a 2005 which is the newer body style and she loves hers too! It looks like they may be more spacious than a Pilot but I'm not sure. The 4Runners are usually one of the top-rated mid-sized SUVs. If you haven't looked at them yet, I would at least check them out before deciding on a Honda Pilot--just to cover all your options! Good luck!

Hi, T.. I drive a Suburban. It's now old, 2002. But I'm also looking to change vehicles. I've done alot of research and I'm going to stick with Chevy Suburbans. I have two boys (7yrs and 16 months), in addition to two step children (15yrs and 12yrs), in addition to one adopted child (9yrs). Without the extra space, I don't know how our family could function. You'd be suprised at the difference in gas mileage. It's really not much of a difference. If you want the Pilot, then go for it. But you should also look at the Suburbans. Have a good day and hopefully this helps.

Hi T.,
We purchased a 2007 Pilot in April as we were taking a driving vacation to Pensacola. We have an almost 3 year old and a 4 year old. We had a DVD installed after market as we thought it was a better deal. We think it is perfect for our family of 4 and the third seat will come in handy. I definitely wanted a third seat as we expect to have the car awhile and I heard I would regret not getting a third row (I have used it when family came in town already). We got a good deal (as you will) since they are about to change the style so for $28.5 or so we got the Pilot with a navigational system and roof rack. We looked at MDXs and Lexus's but for at least $10k more and no navigational system, DVD, (or third row in the case of the Lexus), it didn't make sense at all. The gas mileage is not great but pretty close to their PR...we only got in the 19-20 on the highway but we had a roof box on top and 3 bikes on the back (we added a hitch). I think we have been in the 21 mpg range since. I am definitely a supporter of the environment and have driven sedans with good gas mileage to date but finally decided that at this time in our lives, it made sense to get an SUV and this best fit our needs. The kids LOVE it. There is so much room for them. It is also easy to climb in the back seat from the front if needed. There is a separate AC control for the back (the Highlander doesn't even have a vent in the back seat!). Anyway, other than the gas mileage, we are super happy.

Good luck!

Hondas are great and I would love to have one too but my neighbor that works on only Honda's for a job told a neighbor that that car they have had trouble with and that was about 3-4 yrs ago so I do not know if they have improved. I have had 5 Honda cars and they hold their value. But I was in an auto accident when I hit a deer years ago with my Park Ave and thank God it was not my small Honda. I would probably be dead. $8500 damage to my car. Still driving it and it runs like new but I have had to do repairs and maintanence along the way. New tranny and new super charger. Window motors go out and a truck motor some times act like it could go out. G. W

Hi T..

I have owned a Pilot since March of 2004 and love it. I've had absolutely no problems with the vehicle and get great gas mileage (I'd say 18 in the suburbs and 23 on the highway). I have two huge car seats in the back seat (a Britax marathon for my 1 year old and an Eddie Bauer high back summit for my 3.5 year old). There is room for another passenger in the backseat despite having those back there. Plus, there is a lot of headroom (I'm 5'8" and my husband is 6'2" and we are very comfortable in it). I looked at tons of SUVs and this one made the most sense (gas mileage, safety and residual value). We've used the third row seat a couple of times and it works fine for one adult or a couple of preteens.

On the purchasing end, we bought ours at Bankston Honda in Lewisville from Steve Brodsky. He is a great, older gentleman (and I believe a Vietnam vet) who was very helpful.

Good luck in your car search!

I love the Pilot. It is my dream car/SUV. I also love the CRV--the latest model is so pretty.

My husband sells Hondas (we always joke that they actually sell themselves) at Honda Cars of McKinney. His name is Mark, and if you PM me, I can give you his cell number. If you do decide to go in, tell him I referred you from mamasource--he has specials for people I refer him.

I haven't driven one, but I have a good friend who just bought one a couple of weeks ago and she absolutely LOVES it. She did a ton of research and asked many, many people their opinions; and in the end she said that the Pilot was by far the best one for her. She also has two small children. I also have a friend with a Honda CRV that he really likes. I have a larger SUV now, but when I had a mid-size I really liked my Ford Explorer.
