Home (Non-drug) Remedies for Teething Pain

It looks like my DS is getting one of his incisors. As the nights go by, it gets worse for him as it seems that he's in pain and can't sleep.
He's a little young (7 months) for medications. What can I do? Can anyone recommend something that really works?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We tried the teething pellets last night and he slept much better. I hope this was why.
We're also going to look for the amber necklace and give that a try for daytime.
Thanks for all of your advice.

I swear by Hyland's teething tablets! The gel just washes off their gums because of all the drool but the tablets are great. the directions say to place them under the child's tongue but they still melt very quickly and seem to work even if you don't get them under the tongue. My 10 month old gets very excited when he sees the bottle so I think he knows that they help. I give him 3 whenever i think his teeth are bothering him. They are sold at Walgreen's, CVS and Whole Foods for under $6. Good luck.

I used Motrin/Tylenol for overnight when it was REALLY bad. I also tried the teething tablets and I couldn't really tell if they worked. I also reccomend Oragel Teething Swabs....the medicine comes in a Q-tip like thing and you break of the top and swab on the area that's bothering them. It provides instant relief until the other medicine kicks in.

Jessica,
We JUST went through those incisors recently (infact, we now have 3 and there is still one more).

I use the Hylands Teething Tablets for my son. They are tiny little tablets that dissolve as soon as they put them in their mouth (and make sure that your hands aren't wet or damp when you take them out of the bottle).

Those incisors ARE the worst (until the molars come in).

You can get the Hylands things at most stores . . .they come in a pink box.

You could try propping his head up a bit. Also, nighttime crying sometimes means ear infections - they can really be subtle sometimes. I don't think topical medicines (oragel-type stuff) worked at all.

For during the day, the only thing that I found that worked well for teething was to wet a baby washcloth, wring a little but leave it wet, twist, and put in the freezer until frozen. It really works!

Tylenol... concentrated infant's Tylenol.

I know you want a homeopathic remedy... and I'm sorry I don't have one. but Tylenol or Motrin works... and ultimately that's what you want.

I prefer natural methods for myself over drugs too, honestly, (melatonin to help me sleep, pantothenic acid to improve my skin and complexion, vitamins to boost my mood and metabolism, valerian root for anxiety, etc.) but I would not put anything in my baby that it's manufacturing and quality control isn't regulated by the FDA and been tested for safety.... jsut remember, from nature, doesn't always mean it's safe. Perhaps you could seek the advice of a homeopathic doctor who has many years experience treating babies without traditional 'medication'.

Just be careful what 'natural' remedies you use... and keep in mind,... the cold medicines that were recently pulled from the shelves, was not necessarily because those medicines were unsafe... but the parent's who administered them, didn't follow the directions, and inadvertently overdosed their children...

During the day (or when they wake up at night) you can help them hold a star teether that I found at babies r us. It vibrates and really helps with the pain. Unfortunately, my two couldn't hold it on their own, so I had to help them hold it.

The BEST thing for me was watermelon, cut into squares, and frozen. He LOVED it and it numbed him right up, with a good satisfying texture.

I've also heard hyland's teething tablets, frozen waffles, mixed reviews on oragel, chamomile tea, and other frozen fruits.

late response... but good luck.

I second the advice of Motrin. I did the teething tablets but I didn't notice any change or effect. Motrin is a pain killer, that's what they need. I also rubbed whiskey on his gums to numb them. But Motrin for sure at night, every 4 hours.

It might sound a little hippie dippy, but would you consider an amber teething necklace? It's a necklace made specifically for babies/kids out of amber, which is supposed to be soothing. We got one for my son when he was 5 months old and he's still wearing it. We lost it for a few days and he seemed miserable so that was enough proof for us that it was helping.

I got ours from Three Sisters Toys (threesisterstoys.com) but you can find them other places too.
