I did a search so hopefully this hasn't been asked recently and I missed it. I am planning my daughter's high school graduation party. It is a few days after her actual graduation, for about 50 family members and a few of her friends, outside, casual, pool party. I am looking for a fun, creative theme. I like the Oh the Places You'll Go, but feel it's been done a lot. I sort of like Reach for the Stars, mainly because I already have some decorations and ideas, but I know that is often done as well. Any other ideas? It's in 4 weeks so I'm a little behind! I'd like to do something based on a current song, but I'm drawing a blank right now.

Around here a lot of themes are based on the college the new grad plans to attend. College colors, mascot, etc
This might not be close to your thoughts but it's a popular thing here.
With my kids I just did cake, balloons, flowers, etc. using the logo/colors of the college they were going to.
I think you have the right idea, and my personal feeling is that you should go more that direction ("reach for stars", etc) rather than a party of college colors. The thing is, you are celebrating the *graduation*, it's not simply a celebration of the admission to University X. Also, for photos, having a general theme will create nicer photos for the future, in case in the future your daughter ends up transferring to a different college or anything similar.
Think about the kind of girl your daughter is.
Does she have a wonderful close group of best friends that she'll miss after high school when they're all in different colleges or at different jobs? You might consider buying some blank scrapbook pages and let them write notes to her, memories of high school, etc. Buy colored pens and stickers (easily found at hobby/art/craft stores) and later on, put them in a simple book for her. And provide blank notes for her grandparents or other family notes to write messages to her, reminiscing about the past and hoping for the future.
Is she involved in theater, choir, or on a sports team, or a cheerleader? Make that the theme if that's been a huge part of her high school experience. A party store will have lots of decorations.
Or is she the quiet studious type that is going to college? Maybe focus on the college colors and its mascot or whatever it's known for (location, etc; if she's going to college in a particular town, look up that town and what it's famous for).
If she wants to travel or if she's going away for studies, maybe just make it a travel theme. Get cheap suitcases from a thrift store for putting drink cans and ice in.
Or if high school wasn't super important to her, can you ask her about her favorite songs? Is her play list readily available? Or can you ask a friend of hers? You can google the lyrics and decorate your party around that.
Here are a few pretty simple ideas that appeal to people like me who aren't all that creative! Some of them are more appropriate for kids who are going to college, others for kids taking a gap year, others for those who are traveling:

my h. s. graduation party was boring! it was school colors. no theme, no pool party.. i am glad you are putting more effort into this for your daughter than my mom did for mine!
We did a luau theme graduation party! That was fun. There are so many luau themed decorations (grass skirting for tables, tiki torches, flowers, tiny umbrellas) and so much you can do with the food (pineapple boats, pulled pork, etc). Beach music playing in the background. Give leis to everyone when they walk in. :)
I like "Reach for the Stars". You could do stars and crescent moons hanging from the ceiling, a photo booth, "write your wish for the future on a star" table, serve mini wieners wrapped in crescent rolls, crescent moon shaped cookies, pizza "moon pies", Galaxy punch, fruit, green salads, Moon Rock potato salad, Tang drink, "moon punch w/satellite scoops of rainbow sherbert, chicken wings, taco bar, Pop Rock candy, have Star Wars playing on a tv in a room, hang butcher block paper & have everyone sign their wish to their classmates or advice for the future.
