My husband and I disagree... about how much laundry will fit in our washer. He thinks you can fill it to the brim.

I only fill it 2/3 full so the dirty clothes can move around and get clean in the water..

So how much laundry can you fit in a washer???

What can I do next?

I myself used to fill to the brim just to get more laundry done at a time but, soon realized that my clothes were not getting as clean as they could. They didn't smell clean and I noticed that all the clothes on top were not getting washed hardly at all. I then decided to not fill so much and have not had a problem since.

Just like clothing and jewelry accessories--Less is More!!!

When washing smaller clothing items like whites: socks, undies etc. I fill the washer about 3/4 full. For larger items like jeans and towels I go about 2/3 full. We've been married over 20 years now and have a family of 5. I'm still using the same washer and dryer that we purchased with our wedding money. I take care of my appliances and they take care of me :)

It's also a rule in our house that all pockets must be emptied, pants buttoned and zipped and all clothing turned right side out before going in the laundry chute. Whatever is left in a pocket belongs to me!!!!

Another note, if you haven't tried the Tide with Febreeze, I highly encourage that you do. My clothes smell wonderful, especially my husband's work clothes!!!

Split the household chores--you do laundry and he does the dishes etc. It will hopefully end the arguments--Good Luck!

If you fill the clothes to the top, then they don't get as clean. I fill my washer about 3/4 full at the most.

We are a family of 5...and as much as I'd LOVE to get it all done in less loads, I find clothing gets cleaner in smaller loads! ...and it dries faster, and with fewer wrinkles...

...what kind of man is this who thought he could take on women with laundry issues...silly boy!

I fill it almost to the top of the drum - but don't packed it in. I was told long ago that if you pack it too full then the laundry won't get as clean because the soap can't circulate and if you always pack it too full eventually you will damage the washer.

Ditto on the less clothes in the washer & dryer the longer they last. I usually do about 3/4 full without a problem but never to the brim!

Lisa ,
I am smiling as I write this. My husband likes to overfill as well. Your clothes need to agitate freely. I would say make sure you put the clothes in dry before you run the water that way they are not packed in there because they are wet. But telling you this is singing to the choir. You are trying to help your husband understand. Stick to the facts Lisa, the facts!! If you have your manuel for your washer see what its says for the most effective way to wash your clothes and extend the life of your washer. Your husband is not going to want to dish out money for a broke washer because it was used improperly. If he is like most men and he sounds like he is (since he is not the only husband overfilling a washer)men don't like to make unneeded repairs , if he can see it in black and white from the maker I think that would end the argument. If you don't have the manuel go online and look it up. I'm sure the manufacturers have basic guidlines for washing machine use. May you stand united against the ever growing tide of laundry!:)

I'm with you Lisa. I fill my about 2/3 to half full. I found that when I overload the machine it does not work at all. The downey is still in the machine and the item or items in the washer are still really wet after the spin cycle. Tell your husband he lost the argument :)

Sorry to your husband--but, I agree with you, Lisa. I usually fill up my machine 2/3 full so that the clothes will have a chance to move freely and get cleaned better. Another important note, as I learned many years ago and several hundred dollars later, if you fill it up to the top, overtime it will destroy the agitator and the tub can break off the base that holds it in place--this is true for both front loaders and regular wash machines. Also, clothes become more wrinkled and less cleaner when you fill it up to the top. I've also learned that the same holds for the dryer. My dryer belt broke one time when I overloaded the dryer.
