Help Building My Business

Hi,
I am a hairstylist who recently decided to leave the employee based salon I was at and go into business for myself. It was not a hard decision since my family is the most important thing in my life. With renting my own space I can now make my own hours and be home with my DD who is almost 3 years old. I am a little apprehensive since it solely relys on me now for my income. With that I am looking for suggestion on how to get my name out there and continue building my business up here in McKinney. Right now I am going on word of mouth. I considered doing a small mailer and possibly joining the chamber of commerce, but the cost has made me question my efforts. I am open to any suggestion/advice anyone has on advertising or starting a business.

What can I do next?

The girl I use does it out of her home and it's only word of mouth...she books out a month ahead so I'd say word of mouth works.

Where in McKinney will you be located?

E.,
I have advertised on mamasource and craigslist. I also put together my own website using www.freewebs.com as the site address suggests, it is free!! mamasource has been a wonderful resource for me as I have recieved many orders through my advertisement. I'd love to see your ad. I'm looking for a new hairdresser here in Mckinney :-} Good luck!! M.

I do website and graphic/logo design at a very affordable price. If you would like a quote, please let me know. Otherwise, if you want to design a site yourself I can recommend hosting...even free hosting (although you would be surprised at how inexpensive paid hosting is) and I could give you a list of free or paid directories to list your site in.

Many people in McKinney advertise in the Allen Image as well as www.allenonline.com

Congratulations!

You can attend 1-2 Chamber of Commerce meetings for free- I highly recommend it. Go prepared with brochures, cards, specials, coupons, etc. Don't be timid - perhaps when you introduce yourself you could offer a special 50% off anyone who attended that day's Chamber meeting (you would know they attended because you sould have handed them a special coupon -- it doens't matter if they give it to someone else- that could still be a potential client). You would meet some new people, get to show people how wonderful you are at your craft, and still pocket a little money.

Also, meet with S.C.O.R.E. The members are very helpful, and you could make the appointment at the Chamber, and their services are free. They could give you some business marketing plan ideas. You might also want to donate to various silent auctions, at fund raisers in your community. If you have a kid's special - don't forget to donate to raffles at your local schools.

Good Luck!!!
