Yesterday I had an ECHO done on my heart for a funny sound my doc heard during my check up. Well today I got the call that I had moderate to severe "reflux" in my aorta. Blood is flowing back up into my heart. I have to see a cardio in two weeks. Has anyone had this? Sometimes I feel like my heart is going to hop out of my chest, almost like a panic attack but I am totally calm. I have low BP not bad low just the good range low, 117-122/75-80 depending on which arm they do it on. I guess I am just looking for some reassurance that this is not a "bad" thing just not normal. any info or stories would be helpful.

thanks K.

My daughter has a heart murmur and it is one of the other valves mentioned here. They said not to worry about it. Maybe in her 60's she would need to do something. They were not at all concerned about it. Low blood pressure to me is 100 over 60. Mine is usually between 100 and 120 and usually 60 to 70 and I don't consider that too low. Your blood pressure looks in the normal range.

I have what is called Mitral Valve Prolapse. I am not sure if it is what you have but mine usually doesn't have any symptoms either except an occasional fluttery feeling as you described as my heart wanting to hop out of my chest.
I don't take medicine for it and it hasn't stopped me from participating in sports etc. I hope this is all you have as over 10% of women have it and it never causes any real concern. Good luck and let us know later what the doctors say is necessary.

Hi K.,
The doctor noticed my heart murmur when I was 5. After a few years before 10 we were told it had healed because they didn't hear it anymore. Well at 17 I was told you have a heart murmur. Anyway I am 44 now and have lived with a heart murmur my whole life. About 10 years ago my doctor was very concerned about it and sent me to a cardio. He said from the way it sound I would need surgery. I had an echo, endoscopy to see my heart and finally a heart catheter. In the end the whole wasn't as big as they thought so no surgery needed. I go every 2 to 3 years for an echo so that they can watch it.

When it feels like your heart is beating out of your chest those are heart palpatations. I take vitamin E and its is good for palpatations. I also take Vitamin B-12 and fish oil. When you go to the cardio ask him about these. Usually heart murmurs are found in women and most of the women in my family has it. One male so far. It sounds scary but many, many people have heart murmurs my cardio being one of them. Good luck to you. I hope everything works out for the best.

Did they give you a name for this?

Is it a valve problem?
ie: Mitral Valve Prolapse?
That is just one type.
Not saying it is yours.

They should be sending you to a Cardio Specialist.

My grandpa had a valve problem. Had surgery, then he was fine.
Lived a normal life.

That sounds like a valve problem. You should see a cardiologist and cardiac surgeon to see what they recommend.
I had a hole in my heart that wasn't discovered until it was the size of a quarter when I was 48 (I had a stroke because of it.) After my surgery, I was back to teaching aerobics in 6 weeks. If you have to have surgery, it should be less invasive than this and you will be fine. Just make sure you go to a large, established hospital.
