Hand Foot and Mouth Virus on Tongue Only?

Is this possible? My son (8) has a gross looking sore type thing on the side (slightly underside) of his tongue that hurts. It is not a bump, it looks white and red and looks gross. It is about the size of a dime. He said it came about a day ago. Anyone know if Hand/Foot/Mouth virus can be localized to the tongue??

What can I do next?

We all had it last week, even me. Not sure about that tongue? But my son's throat is still too sore to eat most things after days and days...

Good luck! Hope he feels better soon.

If it is just a single spot (even a big spot) in his mouth it is much more likely to be a canker sore. They can be caused by a variety of things, of course herpes comes to mind, but also injury (such as biting the tongue) and sometimes no obvious reason.
If he doesn't have ANY other symptoms I would doubt that it is HFM - though atypical cases can happen.
Good luck.

It sounds like an ulceration (canker sore or a slipped toothbrush). Doesn't sound like HFM.

sounds like a canker sore to me. they are very painful - he could have bitten his tongue or cut it on a chip or something. i get them all the time, and my 5 year old does too.

but yes, to answer your question, my son had HF&M ONLY in his throat. he was in agony and could not eat solid food for a week. he survived on pediasure. it was a nightmare.

i highly doubt that's what's wrong with your boy. hope he feels better soon though :)

It's an ulcer. Just put some orajel on it till it goes away. You can also put a pinch of salt on it a few times a day. This will help with the pain and also help get an bacteria out so it can heal. However, putting salt on it will be a tad bit painful. But it's so helpful.
