Had a Sore Throat Feel like This??

All three of my kids have had a cold in the last week or two, my husband has it and every kid in my preschool class has one - runny nose, cough, preschool kids have had fever but no fever in my house. It seems like every couple of days my throat will start feeling a little scratchy so I bust out the zicam and umcka and the next day it is gone. Monday my ears began hurting a bit so I used some hylands otc ear drops and they felt better. They have continued to hurt on and off but nothing too bad. Last night my throat started feeling sore again so I took my vitamins and went to bed. I woke up at 3am feeling like I had been kicked in the throat. My throat hurts so bad I can hardly stand it. It is not a normal surface pain like a regular sore throat, it seems like it is deep within the sides of my tonsils and hurts so bad right AFTER I swallow. Almost like there is an extra painful spasm or squeeze in the tonsils right after I swallow. It hurts to talk and it hurts to gargle too even though I did with salt water twice and it made no difference. I have absolutely zero upper respiratory symptoms, no fever. Just this horrible pain in my throat and today the ear pain is back. I don't want to go to urgent care so I am going to try to get into an ENT today but the chances of that are pretty slim for a same day appt. Has anyone been through this? Have any other remedies I can try to make this pain go away? I have already done warm water with raw honey, the umcka, zicam and the salt water gargle. I almost took a leftover vicodin last night to be able to get back to sleep, that is how BAD the pain is. Luckily I finally fell asleep and didn't have to.

What can I do next?

I just had this and it was HORRIBLE! I have never had such a bad sore throat in my life. I could hardly eat a thing. I'm not much of one for rushing off to the doctor, but after a day and a half of the pain I rushed straight to her office.

She didn't seem to think it was strep, but I definitely had an ear infection as well, so she prescribed antibiotics. That helped me immediately. Go see the doc. This one is really bad.

Do you have white spots in the back of your throat on your tonsils? If so, you have strep throat and need medication asap, homeopathic stuff just won't cut it. I liken strep throat to feeling like you're swallowing glass.

Swollen glands in the neck, an infection or absess in your jaw. These could be the cause, but it could be something as serious as thyroid trouble. I say ENT is a great idea.

Hi there.

As a medic, I will say that without examining you and getting your history, I hesitate to offer an opinion. It seems, based on the symptoms you've shared, it sounds like one of the following:

A sinus infection.
and/or
Some sort of Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis (Strep/Viral/Bacterial).

The only way you can know for sure and get the correct treatment is to get in to the doctor and get a swab. This swab will determine the method of treatment (antibiotics or none).

Best of luck,

C. Lee

I would think that your regular GP would be able to handle this, and you should be able to get in quicker with them than you would with an ENT....

good luck! Hope you are feeling better soon!

For me pain that bad is strep . . . luckily I haven't had it in a long time.

That being said, my son got strep multiple times but didn't always have a sore throat.

You're very likely going to need a doctor visit for this one.

I get that same type of pain with an ear infection. I get them all the time...
Did you look in your throat? No patchy white stuff or anything? Usually, I can tell if ear infection is the culprit by putting a few drops of hydrogen peroxide in my ear. If it bubbles and tickles like crazy, ear infection.

Sounds like it could be strep. I had a sore throat a few days and it went away. But my neck hurt bad like muscle soreness and then started what I thought was a sinus infection. No fever or anything. Ended up being strep. You need to get checked out.

O., when I have a. "Comes and goes " like that throat pain--it's a sinus infection. I'd try a netti pot saline rinse.
Good luck!

I had this exact problem earlier this year. I never had a sore throat that gave me such excruciating pain, ever. I thought I might have strep throat, but there were no other symptoms. I went to the doctor and he said it was just a virus. He gave me the terrible-tasting Cepacol. I tried one and couldn't stand it, but my sore throat went away in two days.

Sounds the one time I had strep as an adult (along with an ear infection, which I had never had before and haven't had since, thank goodness). I would get a strep test done to rule it out. Hope you get some relief soon!

I dont think you need a ent.. just a regular old doc will do.. could be strep.

a regular dr. can swab your throat and check for strep.
