Grey Hair - Keller,TX

There was a recent post about hair getting shorter as women get older. Several responders noted that they don't/won't color their hair. However, they were all 50+ when they talked about going grey. I'm 41 (42 sunday, eek). I color my hair light to medium brown, which is close to my natural color. I am also growing my hair out, it's just below my shoulders. Because it's getting longer I would love to stop coloring it, however in the last 6 months I've noticed a ton of grey. Whole top of my head along the part and temple area. I've had to face the fact it's not "a few grey hairs" anymore, it's more like a few brown hairs, lol. My face is still pretty youthful; I've been told I look mid-30s, especially with the longer hair.

So my questions are:
Did any of you let your hair go naturally grey while you were young? I mean younger than 50.
What do you think of women with grey hair that is long?
Would you let yourself go grey naturally at a young age?

What can I do next?

The women in my family go grey very early. My mother was over 50% grey at age 25. I was fairly lucky as mine didn't get bad until mid 30's. Anyway, I thought about not coloring so I let it go 10 weeks. It looked horrible and I couldn't stand it.

I've seen women in their 50's or early 60's that almost all grey and they look very nice. I guess it depends on the individual.

I thought I would go natural, but the trouble with my grey is that it comes in wiry and won't lay well. The color seems to give it more heft and improves the texture. (first greys came in at 29, now 36, and I would estimate I've got a healthy handful, but not enough to be called salt and pepper as yet).

I say whatever you feel the most beautiful with is the way to go.
Good luck to you and yours,

I'm almost 46 and starting to turn grey. I don't color my hair, and I probably wouldn't if it were just about me. However, I have very young kiddos (2 and 5) and might eventually color my hair, just to fit in with the younger moms of their classmates. Kind of a stupid reason, but there you have it.

I prefer short grey hair (I think really short grey hair looks awesome on women), but some women have absolutely gorgeous grey hair, and they can get away with any length. Mine is shoulder length because my hair looks limp and crappy when long.

Do what makes you feel good/right.

Personally, I don't know that length is so much the big deal as texture.. I have seen some women with luxurious long grey hair and it looks GREAT.. look at Emmy Lou Harris... However, I have also seen long grey hair and non-grey for that matter that just looks downright bad.. I do think it depends on the individual.. not everyone can pull off short-hair and vice versa. If you think you look better with longer hair and moreover FEEL better, then go with the long hair... Truly, it's such an subjective thing.

As for me. My family's hair turns white.. skip the grey.. we go white.. My biological mother had curly white hair and it was very lovely.. she received many compliments... Mine has but a slight wave and although it turned white a long time ago I have yet to let it grow out as such... :) I am just not ready for it.. and it's also VERY short... When my hair is longer, the outgrowth is so much more evident and I don't like it so much.

I applaud those women and men who grow their hair out and don't care if it's grey or white.... I am getting there but at a slower pace... used to be that whenever I saw white, I'd color my hair asap.. now, I will let it grow out so much so that at the temples it's white.. but so far, that is about how long I wait..

sounds like you are lovely as is your hair.... do what makes you feel best... and when you feel good.. I think you look good.

I have long hair, I will continue to have long hair. I like it. That's all that matters.

I would say if you want to let your hair grow out and it is a different color, drastically different, then perhaps a good way to do that would be to do a frost on it. The frost would disguise the roots growing out, it would make the line between dark and light less noticeable, more blended in, etc...I have done that before and liked the way it transitioned.

BTW, everyone in my mom's family was totally white by 30. I however took after my dad's side of the family. I looked forward to the day I started turning grey. I'm 53 and now have a few. YEAH!!! I did always wear my hair frosted a lot. I liked the blonder look but only did a pure white frost, I hate yellow blonde. It looks cheap to me.

So I say go to Walmart and get a frosting kit. Have a friend who's not afraid of pulling some hair through a cap, have some fun. It can always be died dark again if it gets messed up. I think a light frost at first then going towards a heavier frost as it gets lighter and lighter.

I used to say I wouldn't color my hair and just let it go grey. I'm now 35 and the greys are starting to come in fast and furious. This is about when my mom's hair started turning grey quickly. I've changed my mind! I will probably start coloring my hair within the next year.

My mom is 60, but can pass for mid-40s when she colors her hair. I have a friend who is 60 who does not color her hair, and keeps it long. She has beautiful hair, but it does make her look significantly older. I think long grey/white hair can be beautiful, but it really depends on the texture of the hair.

I am 50. I have long hair and I will keep my long hair unless it starts dragging me down or looks bad.

I am fortunate to have very little gray which occasionally chows up right around my face.

Due to my Native American Heritage, my hair is very dark.. I do color it because I enjoy playing with color... I keep it dark and sometimes throw in low lights, etc. In the summer, it tends to turn a bit red, especially if I am out in the convertible, etc. The color I get helps keep the red away.

I love long hair and I think some women look great with it. There are some women who need to cut their long hair as well.

It is a personal choice. I still pass for mid 30's so I feel great about my hair.

I tried to just accept it at about your age. I couldn't. I am only a few years older than you now and am still dying it. I use temporary dye, so it doesn't look terrible if I can't keep up with it every 6 weeks or so.

My kids are all 1st grade or UNDER. I'm not going gray *at least* until they're all in elementary school!

I *do* think long gray hair is pretty - on other women. ; )

I have a very full head of grey hair and I am just shy of 32. I color even though it is harder to cover the greys. I am not ready for all grey. Not yet. I think it can look great, long or short, but I do think it adds years to your age. Good luck.

I'm where you are, except that I have dark brown hair straight hair with beautiful silver/white wavy hair suddenly showing up. I wouldn't mind the grays so much if they would be content to blend in with the others. However, they always seem to want to stick out or stand up or something instead of going with the rest of my hair. I've never colored my hair and really don't have any desire to start now. Still, that's a hard decision somedays when I see all those white hairs shining. I have a 4 yr old and have always looked young for my age...I don't want to look like her grandma. Then again, I don't want to have to spend time and money on color upkeep. So, after all that, I have no advice...just empathy.

I think it depends on you and if you work and where you work. My hair is almost white around the face with silver grey throughout the rest not enough to really say salt/pepper enough to be annoying. Since I work with college students I would like for them to see an older woman who is hip but and has it together rather than someone looking like their grandma daily.

When I stop working I may just let the color go and see what I really look like. Otherwise the bottle is coming out for a bit longer.

To each his own. I will be 65 in December but people think I am in my mid to late 40s.

Keep the color going, dear. There is no reason to go grey this early in your life.

Personally, the thought of being grey for 30 plus years is more than I can stand.
