Sensory Integration Disorder With Malnutrition & Eating/Feeding Disorder & Small motor skill problems.. The doctors here 3 different ones want to put a feeding tube in. My daughter wanted a referral To A Childrens hospital with a feeding clinic for help first. We had the choice of Columbus OH, Cincinnati Oh. or Washington. My daughter chose Cincinnati. We will hoepfully go there April 22. There are 3 - 4 days she does not touch food only drinks then there will be 1 -2 days she will eat fairly good. The only things she eats is French Fries, Fried square potatos,Apples,Cheese Crackers, Potato Chips Smooth only, Chicken Tenders or Chicken Nuggets,Green Beans.. 2 - 3 DIFFERNT KINDS OF DRY CEREAL ONLY NO MILK,. If we can find tiny tiny minature M&Ms she will eat a few..Campbells Chicken & Stars.Once in a great while I can get her to take a small bite of mash potatos.Once in a while she will take 2 or 3 bites of Applesauce.Once in a while she will eat Spaghetti with real tiny tiny star noodles with Spaghetti Sauce on them.Does anyone else have a child with this kind of problems, if so please write me at ..

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who have responded so far. She has been tested for all of those so far. She will be going to a out of state feeding clinic in April. I sure hope she can learn how to eat and feed herself in time.

Many children with Fragile X Syndrome have similar eating disorders, problems with many different textures, and sensory integration disorders. Has she been tested for disorders of a genetic nature? Fragile X is one of these.

I do not have a child with Sensory Integration Difficulties, but since I am a SpEd teacher, I have worked with several kids who have this condition, particularly children with Autism. I did not work much on feeding with them, we had a speech person do that, but I can tell you, her diet is more varied than many of the kids! Best of luck with this difficult situation.

I don't know about the eating issues for sensory integration but what you describe sounds like your grandaughter could be mildly autistic or aspergers. google it to see if it sounds right to you. Textures in food can upset these children. I'd say feed her whatever she will eat! Over time you can try to introduce more foods. Figure out what textures she likes and try to duplicate with healthy foods. Just a thought.

As far as sensory integration......once you get some nutrition in your little girl there are exercises a proper therapist can give you to help with the sensory issues.

They want to put a feeding tube in her? She eats more then my daughter and she has made it to almost 5. I am convinced mine has SID but she was tested at cincinnati childrens when she was 20 months and they found nothing wrong with her except she was only 15lbs and 25inches tall so very tiny for her age. I got other opinions at other hospitals too BTW. My daughter is like yours and will only eat foods a certain way like only shoe string fries not crinkle cut and only smooth chips and only chicken fries not nuggets. No vegies at all and mostly white foods like ramon and fettuccine alfredo. My daughter will eat a lot of fruit though. She is still very tiny at almost 5 and 36 inches tall and 29lbs. Yet they say nothing is wrong but she has not tried a new food since she was about 18 months old.

Does you daughter's lab work show actual malnourishment like is she anemic and have low iron etc...? My daughters lab work is perfect some how so maybe thats why they dont think anything is wrong with her. I know this is scary but at least you have drs that are working with you. I cant get the drs to listen to me no matter how much I try. I finally gave up when she was 3 and a 1/2. Just know your not alone with the eating issues and I hope you get some help with your child and the drs can get her eating new foods.

I live in Chas WV and my 12 year old son has been doing this since about 2 or 3 years old. He eats poptarts for breakfast, extra cheddar goldfish for lunch and Wendy's chicken nuggets (until he gets tired of them) for dinner. He always eats though. He has recently started eating grilled cheese sandwiches without the crust and strawberry jelly sandwiches without the crust but rarely eats the whole sandwich. He love french fries but tears the ends off and don't like brown spots. He'll eat hash browns now and mashed potatos but not just anyones. My mom has to make them for him. If I don't wait for fresh nuggets at Wendy's he refuses to eat them and is now at the point again where they taste funny in his mouth. He will eat a nutrigrain bar and mandarin oranges and maybe if I'm lucky 2 slices of a peeled apple with salt. He likes pudding and chips. He is more apt to try something like a chip before real food. He has come a long way but it is still bad. I've had him in therapy at W&C for this eating problem and he tried things for me as long as it was what he chose. The minute she told him to just try something I fixed he refused. He is now at the age where it bothers him and he worries he won't grow out of this. He wants to try but cant. Most of his food except for chips and poptarts and his crackers, he nibbles on. He has asked that I send him back to W&C hospital with the therapist he was seeing (I think her name is Dr. Walker in the resource center building on the hospital parking lot - looks like a trailer). Hope your granddaughter gets better.
