We like the north end the best, near Hanalei, Princeville, Haena, etc. Absolutely gorgeous beaches and very green and lush. We hiked, snorkeled, took a boat up the Na'pali coast, etc.

My husband and I have been there twice. We stayed in Poipu but rented a car and traveled all over. Poipu is sunny and resorty. The north side is laid back, has the surfer vibe and is very green and lush. The Napali Coast is not to be missed. We did a sunset cruise from the Poipu area that was really fun but the snorkel tours of the Napali Coast are UNBELIEVABLE!! It's a must see. Snorkeling is a must do too. We did a helicopter tour which made me queasy but seeing the island from the air was pretty cool.

I LOVE Kauai! I wish we could go back and take my kids but we opted to go to Disneyland this year instead. Have fun!

We went to Kauai in the 80s. One of the most beautiful places on earth. Can't remember which resort we stayed at, but we rented a car for a day and toured the island. Not many paved roads, so we went sightseeing everywhere we could, even on gravel roads. Enjoy every moment and take lots of pictures. Have a wonderful time, I'm totally jealous!!!!! :)

We've always stayed on Maui... Kaanapoli and kapula.

If possible go on a whale watch. It was the most amazing and wonderful experience. We were on a very small dingy type boat and WOW the scenery was unbelievable !!

My first whale watch was on a larger boat which was nice ( more commercial) but not as personal as the smaller version.

Enjoy!!!

We went to Kauai in June 2006 and loved it! It is so beautiful and relaxing! We stayed on Poipu Beach. We really loved ziplining! I was a little disappointed with the snorkeling because the water was so cold (the boat ride was beautiful, though!). I grew up on the Atlantic coast and the water is much warmer. My husband did the helicopter tour and loved it--I passed on that:) Have fun!!

My favorite was a tubing ride down the mountain through canals from old sugarcane plantations. They give you a helmet with a headlamp on it because you go through tunnels, etc. Here is the website: http://www.kauaibackcountry.com/tubing.html

Other than that, I like simply driving around the island with my snorkel gear in the jeep, stopping at deserted beaches and snorkelling or just looking around.

We LOVE Kauai!! My husband and I went for a "babymoon" 6yrs ago, then went back last year with our 3 (young!) kids. The island is not too big, so we stay in Lahaina, which was more central and super close to the airport and drove to different parts of the island and different beaches every day. Waimea Canyon is not to be missed; just remember to bring a hoodie or light sweater because of the temp change with the elevation. There's lot of great hiking along Napali Coast, too, but we didn't hike because of the age of our kids. We love going to lots of different beaches (we use Frommer's) and seek out ones that are good for swimming with kids, so the waves aren't too bad. There are lots of small, hidden gems. I love the beach but am not a swimmer, so we are not into water sports or snorkeling. We're fine laying on the beach while the kids play in the sand or just playing in the water. Poipu is great for nice restaurants and lots of choices, but we love hominess of the north shore. My absolute favorite spot in the world is Hanelei Bay. There's a beach with a pier, and it's surrounded by mountains. It's a good-sized beach and not very touristy at all. Hope that doesn't change, though, because that's exactly where The Descendents (with George Clooney) was filmed. I think we hit every Lappert's ice cream shop on the island! Check out Kauai Nut Roasters, too. Have a terrific trip!
