Going on a Business Trip Next Month and I Am Worried I Might Lose My Milk Supply

Hi Moms!

I need some advice! My daughter is going to be 7 months old next month and I will be away for a business trip for 3 days. I am going to pump but there is no way I will be able to pump as often as I would be feeding her if I was home. I recently started her on rice cereal two times a day but I still nurse her about 6-8 times a day. Should I be worried that my supply will be negatively affected and should I be worried she may reject me when I return?

What can I do next?

She won't reject you when you return! Pump 3 times a day, and every time you go to the bathroom express a little into the sink, while in the shower express some milk then too. Wear breast pads, because even if you didn't need them before, you will while you are on your trip! (Also keep fresh ones in your purse for quick changes when you have a chance)

I went back to work on weekends when my daughter was exactly that age. Let me tell ya, by the 6 hour mark I was so full! When you get back, it may take a day or so to get things back 100% full swing, but you won't be rejected by her or be dried up at all, just maybe a little less milk than usual. By day 3 of your return you will be totally normal again. Good luck, and don't stress! All will be fine :)

There is a book named: On Becoming Baby Wise. They recomend to pump at least 4 times daily in order to keep your milk supply. I really like that boook. It has helped me a lot! I quote exacly what they say>
"As a breast feeding mother, try to maintain four to six feeding periods as long as you are nursing. Any less may decrease your milk supply." I have heard as well that after the 4th. month it is not as easy to loose your milk. However, I went to a trip for 4 days, I did not pump as I should have and I was never able to recuperate the same amount of milk. I did not loose it, but it wasn't the same either. For sure she will NOT reject you! I hope it helps.

I would not worry, worrying will only cause more stress which will affect your milk supply... can you bring her with you? If not just pump when you can, wear nursing pads (the Lansinoh brand are really absorbent and convenient) and hand express (massage your breast and nipple area) a little each time you use the bathroom, or as you remember. Also, she should be ecstatic to see you and get her milk straight from the tap!

My friend recently came from out of state to visit me w/out her baby who she is currently breastfeeding. She pumped 3-4 times a day just to keep her from drying up.

Babywise isn't a great book on breastfeeding, as I've met too many moms who have lost their supply from it's methods. Nursing Mother, Working Mother from LLL is a great book that can help you to figure out what sort of pumping schedule. Contacting a LLL leader near you may also help you get a good routine of pumping and answer any rejection questions.
