Help! We went out of town for a couple weeks and left the dogs with a sitter. When we came back they had had a few accidents in the house and it reeked of urine! Uggh. We went a bought carpet steamer the next day and cleaned the carpets and that helped, but the smell persists. Does anybody have a surefire way to get rid of the smell? I have to say that I have spent the last week that we have been back sick and couldn't really smell anything. Today I finally can breath through my nose and now I wished I couldn't!
I use a product called "Awesome". You can only buy it (as far as I know) at the dollar store, especially dollar tree. Use it at full strength and it works fantastic. Plus, it is only a dollar for a large bottle! I used it on cat pee and it got the entire smell and stain out!!! Good Luck.
Vinegar really works.
This is what I would do.
I would sprinkle baking soda all over my carpet and let it sit for awhile (like an hour or two). Then I'd vacuum that up.
Then I'd get my carpet cleaner and put a mix of vinegar (1/3) and water (2/3) (with a touch of carpet cleaner) in it and and hit the spots or entire area.

LOTS of ladies on here recommended this to me (and it works!):
1/2 white vinegar, 1/2 water in a spray bottle.
Knocked the spoiled milk smell out of my COUCH!! It was so hot and gross and nauseating (I didn't know it had happened, it was my husband's doing)... let it soak in, then blot with a towel until the towel comes up dry... since it's on the carpet, try not to walk on it for a few hours afterwards so it doesn't get all dirty.

I would imagine the dogs probably would get upset a) that you left and b) as soon as the sitter left each day which means it soaked in overnight. It could be that now the problem is that it may have seeped into the padding. Once it hits there, no standard grade steamer, chemical or natural remedy will ever really get the smell out. Although, you may have luck with a professional cleaner (like Stanely Steamers) but I think the normal steamers you or I would buy won't cut that big of a task. If it is that bad, it will actually get to the point where you will be used to it. So when someone who doesn't live there comes in, they will smell it. It is like your perfume, you smell it when you put it on but eventually you can't even though others can. Your nose will adapt to it. Look into a professional is my take at this point.
The old vinegar and water treatment if you know where the spots are.
Pet stores sell enzymatic cleaners that will break down any biological source of smells.
I would pick one up and then soak the accident spots. You need to get the cleaner down into the pad - that's where the smell is hiding.
We use this on pet accidents and never have a problem with them returning to it to smell or re-mark.
I've tried vinegar and it worked sometimes, but the ladies here recommended Nature's Miracle. It can be bought at pet stores. It is amazing! It gets the smell out completely so that pets don't return to mark the area. I am so glad other mama's recommended it to me. :)
go to a pet store and get a cleaner made specifically for urine removal. i think we used the one called nature's miracle. always worked for us.
We use Sol U Mel for stains and odors.
I use OUT. They sell it at Walmart. I've never seen it anywhere else for sale, It has enzyme action and it literally "eats" the urine out of the carpet. Works perfectly every time. Plus if your kids ever puke... you can use it on that too... and if you spill milk, or pretty much anything. The trick is first blott up the pee, then the major thing you need to do is SOAK the carpet and then leave it alone. It works without rubbing.
