Getting Pregnant on the Pill

I've been wondering this. Ok, say you miss a pill and take it the next day when you remember. You can still get pregnant? How would you know? Say you take your pill every day and only get your period every 3 months or so. Also, what if you miss a pill, you do get pregnant but you don't know and you continue to take your birth control pill every day... Does that hurt the baby? Just wondering.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi, so yes I missed a pill but I took it the next day. That was just this past weekend. I was with my boyfriend for the past 5 days (long distance relationship) so we were obviously having lots of sex (LOL) I've missed my pill sooo many times before and never got pregnant so I don't think I'm pregnant ... But, this was just 2 days ago I missed the pill. To be on the safe side, I'm guessing I should wait a few weeks then take a test? I am on the type of pill where I only get my period every 3-4 months and I just had a period last month.

You can get pregnant using any form of birth control... ANY. Of course you shouldn't continue to use BC once you KNOW you're preggers, but it happens. Same as women who don't know they're pregnant drink/smoke/ride rollercoasters and have healthy babies ;) Then there are women who do everything RIGHT before, during, and after pregnancy, and have sick babies. Whatever was meant to be, will be :)

You can get pregnant if you take a pill late, so I would recommend that you take a pregnancy test just in case. But you need to wait a few weeks to get an accurate reading.

I got pregnant on the pill (we believe it was after taking antibiotics) and continued to take it for another month until I realized that I was expecting. It is SO common to get pregnant on the pill, as most pills are not actually that strong, and most women do not have the same ovulation schedule, thus making the pill less effective (this came from a drug rep who sells multiple types of BC pills).

My son was perfectly fine and nothing bad came out of it. However, if you think you may be pregnant, I would go to the doctor and ask for some blood work to confirm that.

It depends on which pill you are taking. Read the package insert. It will tell you exactly what to do if you miss a pill. Some pills in doesn't matter. Some in depends on what part of your cycle you are in. Read the insert it should detail all of that.

Yes, you can get pregnant if you miss even just one pill! I would know, because I did. I doubled up the next day when I noticed and I still got pregnant.
This is what is called non-perfect (or typical) use and the effectiveness of the pill by typical use is only about 95%. That's still pretty good, but pregnancies on the pill are common.
If you are on Seasonale or another "long cycle" pill, take a pregnancy test 2-3 weeks after your "mishap".
If you are on a regular pill, take a pg test before starting the next pack.
No, continuing your BC in early pregnancy does not affect the baby, but you should stop as soon as you find out.
Good luck!

You should really ask your doctor, but keep in mind, there is still a chance of getting pregnant if you take your pill religiously EVERY day at the SAME time of day which is basically the perfect schedule. I know someone who just had a baby last year and she was religious about her pill, wasn't taking antibiotics which could mess with the effectiveness, etc. So, yeah, there is a chance regardless of how small. Remember, if you miss 2 days, it is highly suggested you use a backup.

My best friend took the Pill with unreal regularity... same time of day, every day for 10 years... got married and they wanted to wait at least two years before getting pregnant. Oops. More like 2 months. The Pill is 99% effective... of course for that 1% of the population that statistic means nothing! Her son is absolutely fine, but she stopped taking the Pill the day she suspected she was preggers... we were actually at a bachelorette party and really intoxicated when she said something about being 2 days late, which on the Pill shouldn't happen. We scampered nextdoor to CVS and bought a test, which she took at the bar and well... he's a brilliant little boy, so no harm done.
