Could I Get Pregnant While on the Pill?

For the last 3 days I have been extremely nausuated like I was with my first child and my gums have been very sore, which was how I knew I was pregnant with my second child. However, I've been on YASMIN for 10 months, and I take it within 2 hours every night -- beteen 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. My periods have been super light since I've been on the pill -- almost nothing, so I can't really go by that. I took a test two nights ago and it was negative, but the nauseau is getting worse and worse. I am at work, and I can barely function and I am so tired.

Does anyone know if you can get pregnant while on the pill. When I get off work I will probably take another test, but maybe it's too early??

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I am not pregnant. Although I was initially excited, the more I thought about it, the more terrified I became. We are not ready for #3 right now, and if anything, this has taught me to take the pill at the SAME TIME EVERYDAY. Thanks for all the support -- false alarm;)

I did get pregnant with my first child while on bc pill, however I didn't know that it was important to take it at the same time each day for it to be most effective. I began taking the pill in the first place to suppress ovarian cysts, but stayed on it after getting married for birth control reasons also. But after having my 2nd child I'm on the pill AND I have the Mirena IUD--double protection in case I miss a pill. (Which sadly happens a couple times a month! I'm such a space cadet when it comes to remembering things!)

GOSH, if you are preggos you are gonna be tired you poor thing! With a 2 yr old, 1 yr old and possibly another on the way :) Good luck sweetie

Hate to tell you but I got pregnant while I was on the pill. It can happen. Now after my daughter was born I got on the pill and I use a diaphragm as well. I figure two methods are better than one. Go to the doctor and they will give you one and if it doesnt show up in your urine, then they may take a blood test. Plus if it isnt pregnancy they can run tests for you and see if there really is anything wrong.

I have been on Yasmin as well and i experienced the light periods, Then what happened to me i was on the pills for 15 months, i stopped taking them because i hadnt had a period from the time i was on them 1 year till i went off them i had to be given pills to be able to have a period. I would say test in a weeks or so and if that is negative then i might go talk with your doctor.

Hi L.,
I'm gonna say it may very well be the pill, my body is very senseitive to the pill. It makes me tired and not feel very good either. As long as you take the pill every night at the same time you should be ok.

On your second question you can get pregnant on the pill if you are not taking them at the sametime everyday. Everyday meaning if you take them at 9 pm you have to take them at 9 pm all the time.

I would contact your Dr. if you continue ot have problems.
Hope you feel better soon. W.

This may seem like a goofy response but I had a friend who thought she was pregnant - has the nausea and other stuff but she ended up having a severe urinary tract infection. So bad that it had progressed to her kidney and that was actually what was making her feel nauseated and very tired. I say all that to say that sometimes our bodies mask the real problem.

I wish you luck whichever way you'd like the chips to fall.

I have a friend who's wife became pregnant while on the pill, and then a few years later while on the depo shot. No bc is completely effective. Is there any chance you were ill at any time since your last period? I've you've had any stomach virus/flu of any sort it can reduce the effectiveness quite a bit...

I took Orthopronovum for three months and felt like I was pregnant the whole time. I was tired, nauseated, and skipped my periods, and turned out it was just the type of bc I was on. I would see your doc, but I know that the hpt needs to be taken as much as a week to two weeks after a missed cycle to be sure.

In Feb. I stopped taking Yasmin, it never made me feel sick or anything, it simply made my period short and light-med. flow. I never took mine at the same time for the 6 months that I was on them, and never had a problem.
But YES you can get pregnant while on them. Were you possibly taking any antibiotics recently? Antibiotics can affect birth control.
Depending on how many days you are late, wait about a week to week and a half and test. If its still negative defintely do to the doctor.

Yes, you could be preg. (I got preg on birth control pills, a diaphram (sp?) and condom... so you can beat the statistics) I would wait to take a test though, if you are preg now you will be preg in 2 weeks too. Of course I would start taking care of myself now though just in case!

Hi L., I actually got pregnant on both the pill and the patch. My kids are 5 and 3. I very nervous about the pill and patch myself. I had the IUD I believe that is what is called, what is inserted by the doctor and removed by the doctor. Anyways so the answer for your question is yes you can.

L. B.,

Yes you can get pregnant while still on the pill. I had a very good friend of mine who was on the pill and still wound up pregnant.

I got pregnant with my son when I was on birth control, and I know I didn't miss a pill that month. So yes it is possible...it is not 100% fool proof.

If you think you are take a test, because taking any type of birth control pill while pregnant can hurt the baby.

Good luck!

You sure can. I got pregnant with my oldest while on the pill. My sister has gotten pregnant with both or hers while on the pill.

Go buy a name brand test. I have known several people to get a false negative when using the cheap ones.

I got pregnant twice on the pill (now I use an IUD). The first time I took a test and it came back negative. I didn't read the instructions that said if you get a negative response, but still experience symptoms, then take the test again in something like 2 wks. I did not do that. So I was 12 wks pg when I finally realized that something was going on. I told my husband I was either pregnant or I had a tumor. For a minute, I think he was hoping for tumor. With my daughter, I started feeling the same symptoms and so this time when I got a negative response I waited 2 wks and retook the test and got a positive response.

So, I'd wait a few weeks and retake the test. If it's still negative then see a doctor about your symptoms.

Good luck!
