Fresh V. Frozen Vegetables (Nutritional Value)

Mamas & Papas-

Please point me to a good source on this one, is it true that frozen vegetables are just as nutricious, if not more nutricious than those you'd get in the produce section of the supermarket? The reasoning offered is that they are frozen just picked whereas the ones in the produce section have been lingering in transit and on the shelf.

Thanks,
F. B.

Yup, that's correct. We get lots of frozen veggies, with the added benefit that they keep longer than fresh. :)

Correct! They are flash-frozen right after being picked so they don't "sit around". The only thing fresher is to pick it yourself!

Frozen tend to be more nutritional than fresh. I can't remember where the canned nightmares fall in this.

If you get local homegrown they should be about the same.

Out of my garden I am pretty sure I win. :)

REALLY fresh (ie your garden or farmer's market fresh) is obviously best. frozen is the next best thing.

Homegriwn aren't "more nutritious" but they (may) have less chemicals, pesticides, etc IF that's how you garden.

Better to eat an organic fruit cup than a fresh peach covered in pesticides, right?

Eat as "close to the way God made it" is a good rule for eating overall!

According to the FDA, there isn't much of a difference between the nutritional value of fresh and frozen veggies because fresh ones lose nutrients during shipping (and because they are usually picked early) and frozen ones lose nutrients during blanching and reheating.

Locally bought in season vegetables are most nutritious. Fresh and frozen bought at a chain store are pretty well equal. Canned are just yucky.

fitday.com has a lot of articles and info on nutrition.

I just read that if the fresh item you are buying its not "in season"frozen is more nutritious.

Yes. And they are often tastier for the same reasons.

Fresh and fresh-frozen are about the same.

The biggest difference is the store vegetables vrs home grown. Home grown is more nutricious and much fresher. And you know if the home grown have any chemical pesticides on them because you are the one putting the pesticides on them.

Growing a garden isn't that difficult. Even I can do it.

Good luck to you and yours.
