Freakin' Fruit flies....how Do I Get Rid of Them???

We've never had a problem with them before. I came home from the hospital with flowers. I'm sure the flowers brought them because I noticed a fly or two at the hospital. Stupid pain meds. If I had realized it, the flowers would have been pitched much sooner.

Now the flies are BAD. How do I get rid of them!?!?!?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Excellent info! I'm going to go make my bowl right now.

The flowers were cut and in a vase. I've had the plant gnats before, and actually have a bug killer for that. I just wanted a safe way to get rid of the fruit flies.....and I have it now!

THANKS!

Leave a glass of red wine (or white, but red it better) on the counter overnight.

It has to be FRESH wine (not vinegar, although either honey or vinegar will catch a few, they only get a few). Even the cheap $2 mini bottles.

Straight sided glass. Wine. Leave out overnight. That easy.

Make sure all fruit and fresh veggies are out of the area, first...

then... put about 1/4 C cider vinegar in a shallow bowl, and put a couple of drops of dish soap in it. Just stir it gently to spread the soap around, but don't make bubbles.

In a few days, you'll have BUNCHES of drowned fruit flies in the bottom of the bowl...

I am having problems with that right now, also..... and have probably 50 or more fruit flies in the bottom of the bowl. My biggest problem is that the bananas are still on the counter, so they keep going back to that. (I don't want to put the bananas in the fridge, though....)

However.... if you brought the flies home from the hospital in plants, they may actually be "fungus gnats" ...... they breed in the moist top layers of potted plants.

I had that problem earlier this summer. After asking mamapedia I tried putting out a little dish of cider vinegar with a drop of dish soap in it. I changed the dish every day until they were gone.

We're fighting the same battle right now. We learned that a glass with apple cider vinegar with saran wrap over it, and a few holes poked into the wrap, works great. They get caught inside the glass and stay there.

Or a glue trap with a little cider vinegar on it. This question was asked not long ago (maybe by Sherri?) so you can search the archives and find several responses.

Uhg I feel you! What is it about sweaty/dirty laundry that they like? My husband comes home from the gym or tae kwon do all the time and throws his sweaty stuff on the floor and they love it! gross. They also like to hang out on the shower curtain!? so nasty. I have found that 'defunking' my house and removing all vegetable and fruits from the table works over night. also make sure the trash is not living near your house or in your house. It works for me every time. I have them right now again too. every time I throw something in the garbage they fly out. suckers! Guess that is what I'll be doing today.
I have never tried the wine purposely but I do know that they do love a wine glass with residual wine sitting in the bottom in the past. and I have tried the soap and vinegar/honey did not work for me. I had like 3 flies in there! I think it attracted more!

I agree the vinegar/soap method works, though I found that the less stinky red wine vinegar worked as well as the super-stinky apple cider vinegar. So the red wine idea might work just as well (have to try that next time I get them!) Also, if you have fruit/veggies that get ruined in the fridge (bananas, tomatoes), put them in a bowl covered tightly with a dish towel until the problem subsides.

I've also made a DIY trap with banana pieces/peel in a jar with a paper cone like this one:

It worked pretty well too.

Do the vinegar thing like they said. However, do not use a ton of vinegar. Shall dishes work best. Also, do it at nighttime. If you put a nightlight in the area and the bowl with vinegar and Dawn dish soap in it below the nightlight, the bugs are drawn to the light. Good luck!!

Yes to apple cider vinegar and dish soap. I had no idea I had so many of the buggers in my house! I've reset my "trap" a good dozen times in the past week...I will find where they are coming from even if I have to turn my kitchen upside down to do it.
