Ladies, We are having a Luau themed birthday party for my almost 6 yr. old. I was wondering if you wonderful ladies had any ideas for food we could serve at the party that would fit the theme? Thank you so much in advance for your time!

Target carries chocolate covered macadamia nuts. You can make Teriyaki burgers on the grill and serve with a slice of pineapple. For a cool treat you can offer frozen mango on toothpicks and shaved-ice (snow cone) with coconut flavoring. Have a fun party :)

kalua pig in crockpot - pork shoulder, rub salt on the outside, add a little liquid smoke, cook in crockpot for 8 hours. Meat should shred easily. I cook it when I want a little taste of home.

Mango jello- I can email mail you privately if you want. Looks cool because little bits of mango float to the top of the jello.

Teriyaki marinate-equal parts soy sauce and sugar. Add one clove minced garlic, 1/4-to 1/2 tsp sesame oil, handful of green onions. Marinate overnight thinly sliced beef/chicken thighs before grilling. Or mix a bit of marinate into the hamburger meat before making patties, then grilling. -- Not good as a sauce after the meat is cooked. If the pieces of sliced beef is small enough you can put it on skewers and grill.

Another thing we eat is portuguese sausage. Just grill and slice on the bias and serve with tooth picks. Since you are in Aurora, H Mart might carry it.

Paige has great authentic ideas.
If you want to add something (not authentic but....), lil smokies?
Fun, easy to do in a crockpot.

Hawaiian haystacks work for a full meal or a smaller snack.
You put out all the desired ingredients and everybody assembles their own (6 year olds will need some help).
Start with rice. Then we usually have a chicken cream gravy (can chicken, cream of chicken soup, milk, mix and warm before), pineapple, coconut, cheese, and peas. You can put anything on them that you want (more or fewer things based available based on how much you want to do). Some other favorites are: chow-mein noodles, sliced olives, green pepper, green onions ...
You could even get creative and do a more snack/dessert based one. Just substitute similar textured ingredients (rice could still work, or something else, whipped cream or choc syrup instead of gravy, coconut, nuts, M&Ms, etc). But then you wouldn't necessarily want to do a cake.

I had a luau themed party for my two girls when they turned 7 and 4 (same b-day 3 years apart, we combine parties). It was really great, I bought some supplies from Oriental Trading and some from a dollar store, sometimes you can get a better deal at the dollar store, esspecially if you don't need a large ammount of the item. We had grass skirts and leis and a CD of Hawaiian music so the first part of the party was just getting dressed up and dancing. I just let them make up their own hula moves, but you could probably learn some real hula dancing online somewhere. Then I had the kids make a craft, we decorated frames that I bought from Oriental Trading, but a simple craft where they can glue seashells and fake flowers to cardstock or wood would be good too. We then had a fishign game with a blue sheet hung in a doorframe, they had a pole to fish for their prizes, I bought some adorable hula teddy bears to put on their fishhooks, and a prize bag with candy and a couple of cheap plastic toys too. We then had the cake and ice cream opened gifts, danced a bit more, and the party was finished. I'm sure there are lots more fun activites you could do if you want to fill more time. An idea I didn't do but that would be fun is to string your own leis. Have fun!
