The Hula Hoop contest is a MUST at a Hawaiian bday party.
They can be pricy when buying more than one. You can buy
in bulk at http://www.USToy.com and if you happen to know
a teacher you are friends or family with, you can get a discount too.
USToy also accepts other companies advertised rates so take in a print
of say OrientalTrading and if USToy sells for more they will sell
for the same fee.

Party City on Florence sells a cd titled Drews Famous Party Music "Hawaiian Party" for roughly $12.
You can probably even get it at the Alins Party supply there in S. Downey on Paramount by McDonalds.

Party Warehouse in Montebello on Whittier Blvd. & Bluff offers great deals on themed decorations props and balloon style. Tell the girls C. of CharmandHappy.com sent you.

I know you are on a budget so hiring a Hula Dance instructor may be out of the question, but I bet it would be cool to have tv outside (if the party is outside) playing a hawaiian movie dvd like an old Don Ho or the Brady Bunch goes to Hawaii or even a How to Hula dvd with volume off. Have you ever seen that. It's pretty cool. It really adds to the atmosphere. I first seen this in clubs on 80's night. The big screen would play silent videos of stuff from the 80's.

Don't worry about the grass. Everyone's grass is dry. Hang some decorations or gballoons, and no one will care.

Oriental Trading and the dollar store are GREAT places to shop! If you buy a bunch of dollar store flowers, you can use dental floss and needles to make leis or bracelets. You can also buy dollar store hair clips and hot glur flowers onto them.

Serve fruit punch and skewers of pineapple and watermelon. If you want to serve a full meal, add white rice and chiken skewers to the menu. (Costco has pretty inexpensive teriyaki chicken kabobs.) Or you could just get a ham and pineapple pizza and fish crackers.

Most girls this age like to dance. The library might have a CD or DVD of Hawaiian music you could borrow. A movie like "South Pacific" could be fun.

You could teach them a few Hawaiian words - aloha, mahalo, wahine, keiki - or tell a story from Hawaiian folklore.

Play volleyball or soccer with a beach ball, or musical chairs to Don Ho. Girls like to be giggly and silly. Have a sand castle building contest, or a toss game with plastic fish.

Have fun! And don't worry, the kids will have fun just being together.

Send a lei in the mail with invitation attached.
Order a plain white sheet cake from Costco. 16.99 You can either create a volcano on top with two homemade 8" cakes just carve them into a mount and build up. Pour melted chocolate on top. Use sparkle candles and/or a little dry ice in the cone of the volcano for effect. Very Hawaiian. Or, buy palm trees, hula girls, flowers, and let girls decorate either the cake or their own cupcakes.
Go to florist or flower mart and order bulk flowers and let girls string leis.

Limbo is always fun. All you need is a bamboo stick and a few nimble participants.
Hapa is a great Hawaiian band. You can download some music and/or check out from library.
Serve non alcoholic pina coladas in hollowed out pineapples.
Appetizers are known as "pupus" you can keep it simple with skewers and rice and fruit and or/hawaiian style buns with pulled pork.

I had the same problem, dry grass and so I changed it into a Lagoon party. Jessica's Lagoon Party. That changed from Hawaiian only a bit, because it still works. The grass was totally dry, basically dead. I hung a tarp up high over the basketball court and we did crafts under it. Hung whatever I had, paper fish, netting, starfish up. I hung hawaiian lighting up and played tropical type music). I made big flowers out of a few colored poster boards. The kids played with bubbles in the "Lagoon" I made and found big wands. Their was a treasure chest with hidden treasure (loot bags) they had to follow a map together and do actions each time they stopped at a clue. Hula Hoop games, Limbo, Face Painting, Fishing game (they can get a cute lollipop. I even make a big purple octopus from posterboard they pinned (taped) flowers to on it's head while blindfolded. Make bracelets with dental floss and beads & shells. Cupcakes with a big flower on em. Don't forget to take photo's by the big Lagoon sign you make from Butcher Paper & Paint, add glitter. They dressed in shorts and were told they might get wet. The Hawaiian Leis I had to buy. She loved it! Good Luck!!!

Did the same years ago for my step daughter. Oriental trading was really inexpensive got grass skirts and leis. Games were limbo, bob for tropical fruit, hula moves.

Oriental trading is the best. Get fake leis and give to everyone as they come in. make it a "tacky touristy" party! There are cheap small Hawaiian paper bags at Michaels. Find hawaiian pencils etc. and put in bag for party Favors. OR, inexpensive hawaiian towels for party favors. Make a big sign that reads "aloha".

You can check out a book or video from the library on how to HULA, ask the library they can get it in from another library if you give them enough time. Thrift stores too might have some misc things. Big Lots, has a bunch of Luou things right now. I used the grass towel/blanket things they are $1, for table tops, around the deck/fence for ambiance. Also if you take off one side of the binding you can use them as skirts, wet and crumple to soften and trim ends to make it uneven.around the table for a skirt also or over some pvc for a hut or tiki bar. a couple grass hats upside down for chips and fruit. umbrellas in the drinks(fruit punch with some rainbow sherbert in the bowl)

"sand cake" bottom layer, graham crust, middle layer butterscotch pudding, crush butterscotch cream cookies on top. I hid chocolate seashells inside.

"luau" drink: My Tai (no alcholol of course) i used orange juice cranberry juice and Sprite. (I did splurge for the little umbrellas!) I served the drinks in wine glasses.

Decorations: i bought about $10 worth of flowers from the dollar store and put them all over the ground.

Be creative, if you use your imagination you can leave your credit card in your purse.

Well, my daughter is younger (she turned 6) but we had a Hawaiin party as well. We had a Hula Hoop contest (several times actually)and we rented a Waterslide Jumpy (TOTALLY worth the price for her age and a bit older, but not so sure for 12 year olds) We served rice with sweet and sour meatballs, spring rolls, and other "somewhat" Hawain foods.

You can make leis out of tissue paperin a combination of three shades of your daughter's favorite color. These can be uded to greet your guests as they arrive and can serve as party favors'for your girl you can make a "grass" skirt out of brown paper bags and white glue, and a pinata made with a 22in balloon covered in papier mache and dyed brown with a mixture of water, white glue and a half spoon of instant coffee decorate the top of your pinata using large colorful tissue flowers. also for loot bags buy a water balloons bag and inflate as many as loot bags you need and proceed to cover them as the pinata, also gluing a smaller flower on top there could be a string tied to make up for a handle fill your loot bags with coconut macaroons, candy, cookies and or fruit. You can order your cake or make it yourself with a crown of rainbow assorted simple five petal icing flowers.And for drinks, good old hawaiian punch. For the ambiance, download some hawaiian music from the web...Love...T. N.

Try the 99 cent store. They have things from time to time that could be fashioned into your theme. Also it is a great place to go for gift bags. You might want to try friends for old costume ideas.

There are lots of great websites that have birthday party ideas. I found fun inexpensive activites to play at the party. Also for party favor, Oriental Trading Co (online) has lots of cheap but cute items. I know they have Hawaiian themed things for sale. Good luck

Girls that age love crafts.....making their own jewelry, etc. I like the idea of making your own leis that someone else suggested.

My girlfriend brought in someone to teach the girls a couple of hula dances. They were simple dances, but the girls absolutely loved it. I was amazed at how much they were into it!

Go to the 99 cent store. You'll find just about everything you need there. I go to Costco for my party food. I save a grip of money that way and the food is always superb. Good luck!

Start at the $ store for Hawaiian theme items. Maybe even look into play ground sand from Lowes. Make a beach with a couple of baby pools (which I have seen at walmart) and the playground sand. You could ask for baker to make an ocean sceen cake and you will not have to do any of the work:)

Maybe you could call around to find a hula teacher to come out and teach a mini lesson.
