OK I was watching the Doctors and I was curious on the dye in foods of Yellow 5&6 or for that matter any color with a number.. How long does it take for it to get out of kids system if you start to watch the food intake? I kid you not I gave them breakfast the other day after reading all this on yellow 5&6 and it was like 5 min she was going WILD.. I did not think it would kick in that fast. I know one thing I am tired of the craziness in the house with them so hyper. it is CRAZY..I know it is going to be hard finding foods to be good for them I am just hoping with the week I watch their intake it will be a HUGE difference. ANY help would be great.. we are going to a church convention in 2 wks and it would be SO NICE for it to go good so we can listen lol..... Thanks and look for any help...

What can I do next?

I knew a young man once who had these allergies and it does kick in that quick. It can take months to complete leave the body. Much shorter time if it has not gotten into the blood stream.

It's very encouraging hearing parents (all the responses are on target) making connections to these harmful substances that absolutely affect our childrens behavior. The mantra at my home when my girls (5 and 7) want a snack is "fruit or vegetable" ..you can find some "acceptable" packaged snacks though it take some detective work reading the labels. The hardest "battle" is while they are in school --but it's a battle worth fighting because this is where they need their clear minds and attention spans the most --in their learning environment. It's overwhelming when you start paying attention to the amount of JUNK they get at school for rewards and celebrations...but I digress. Get your own home in order first and then you can deal with outside the home. We ALWAYS (from birth) carry a "food bag" with us when we leave the house that has whole food snacks such as carrots, sugar snap peas, edamame, apples, avocados (basically any veg or fruit) and nuts, dried fruit, occasionally some pita chips, rice cake or corn chips and water. This is our go to when the hungies come on. If you want more ideas or support please feel free to email (Im seven years at this) ____@____.com

The easiest way to keep your family healthy is to avoid processed foods as much as possible. As my doctor says, shop around the perimeter of the store where the fresh foods are.

Where cereals are concerned, stay away from sugary, processed cereals and snacks, and go with a wholesome granola (it can seem expensive, but you only need to eat a tiny amount ~ no fillers), oatmeal with honey or real maple syrup, and snack bars that aren't filled with sugar and dyes. The fewer ingredients you see on the label, the better. Actually, the more ingredients you see, the more filler and waste there is in the product, so the more your family has to consume to feel full.

I use coconut milk in place of dairy on my cereal, and it's delicious. The best brand I've found is Trader Joe's Light Coconut Milk. It's the consistency of half & half, and a very healthy alternative.

We had to do this with Red dye and corn. It won't take long to notice the difference but eliminating everything is tough. a food journal can help you keep track of behaviors and food intake. be diligent and keep in mind often what they are getting at school for lunch contains this sort of stuff.

I used to work as a chemist in the food industry. Keep in mind that the two biggest one are the yellow #5 and red #40. There is a difference if you see it listed as a lake or just plain. Most other countries have band these substances when use alone (decades ago prior to 1985). A color lake sort of encalsulates the dye making it harder for the body to absorb it. But the amazing thing is almost everything contains the yellow #5.

Dear M.,
I did not think it would be that fast either. I do know you should stay away from anything artificial. Especially Nutrisweet or Aspartame. Google Betty Martini & you will find she had funding taken away from her because she found out Nutrisweet caused many health problems. Articial flavors too. Our bodies need what God created, not substitutes. L. J

i had a daughter who was very calm throughout the first two years, but started crying excessively, having behavior issues, etc. After an exhaustive search to see what was wrong, a nurse practioner finally suggested we cut out all chemicals. What a difference! She was our calm daughter again. It takes some time at first to figure out what you can eat, but there are so many more options of all natural food out there readily accessible than when we started. It doesn't have to be expensive either. We cut out all preservatives as well. I know it sounds crazy, but until you experience it, reading labels will seem like such an easy tradeoff.
