Flat Head - Chicago,IL

My son wore the star band for 4 months. At his 12 month bday the doctor told us that we were done with it, since his head was growing in the right direction, but would probably never be perfect. It's 3 months later and to us it doesn't look as if it's changed too much since we got the helmet off. The flat spot still looks pretty pronounced. Has anyone had any good results from a Cranial Sacral therapist for this? Has anyone experienced this and had more "evening out" at this late age (15 months)?
Thank You!

What can I do next?

I am a pediatric PT and to be honest I had never heard of cranial-sacral therapy to treat plagiocephaly but having just read a bunch of articleson it I would definately give it a try. Your difficulty might be in getting insurance to cover it. If you do go that route I would definately be interested in hearing the results.

As the pp said at this age there is less movement of the skull so the evening out is more difficult. You could go get a second opinion for a doc band at cranial technologies.

My son has a really bad flat spot. We have asked his Dr. about this, but his Dr. says not to worry. He was born C-section so his head was perfectly round, but he had colic and didn't like tummy time, thus the flat spot. One of my friends had the same problem and her daughter just gradually got better over time, but had a noticable flat spot until about 4. I do have to say that the more hair he gets the less noticable it will be. No one knows my son has a flat spot unless they pet his head. We decided since it's just cosmetic we'll wait until he's old enought to decide if he wants to do something about it (Surgically that is). But it could get better even later on. Good luck!

There are other companies other than Star Band that treat plagiocephaly. Cranial Technologies (www.cranialtech.com) is one. Maybe contact them for a consult to see if they can help.

My son wore a band from Cranial Technologies but after a month or so after we were done (for it for 6 months) his head is now flat again! I would agree to call Cranial Tech though because I really did thing they were good, even if we didn't get the perfect result. I would not recommend Cranial Sacral Therapy (is there any research to support it's use in plagiocephaly?!) because of the dangers of carotid dissections and resutling strokes.
