At what age should a child have their first dental appointment? My son is about 15 months old and has about 7 teeth. I was curious as to when he should start going to the dentist. Thanks! :)

My dentist recommended age 3-4. He told me that pediatric dentists will tell you earlier, but it is not really necessary if you practice proper dental hygene...

I heard at the age of one...I know a great kids dentist if you need any referrals :) I took my daughter when she was two (as soon as she came to live with us) and the dentist had no qualms about her being there.

I was told at the age of 3. Call your dentist to be sure.

Hi S.,
I use to work at a dental office and we would recommend bring them in when they have all 20 teeth, which is usually around 3. A first good experience to the dentist will make for good future appts. The dentist I worked for is great with kids and his staff is too, they are located in Olathe. Otherwise, I would suggest a Pediatric dentist that specializes in kids!
Take care,
V.

Age 3 is when it is necessary for first cavity checks, but I've heard to take them earlier so they become accustomed to the dentist. My sister waited until three with her daughter and she wishes she would have taken her sooner because her daughter absolutely threw a fit because she was so scared.

Hi S.,

I agree with other posters that 3-4 years is a good time.
I realize that everyone has opinions which are usually based from experience, but our "first" visit with my son (now almost 18) was to a pediatric dentist and it was a horrible experience. Obviously we were new patients because we had to fill out all the new patient paperwork. No one in the office, not even the dentist himself, introduced themselves to us. He wasn't traumatized or anything, but no one overly kind or friendly for a pediatric office. I asked my own dentist if he saw kids and he did. My kids LOVE our dentist! *I also have a 13 year old daughter who has never gone to anyone else.

Just remember YOU are the consumer. Ask questions and do not let anyone intimidate you. There are too many outstanding practitioners out there to be unhappy.

By the way I am a registered nurse and remembered that experience when I worked in a specialists office. I always introduced myself and other staff members as well as asked if they had any questions or concerns. AND encouraged them to call me if they thought of something after they got home. I was never to busy to make someone feel more comfortable.
