First Cold
I think my daughter is getting her first cold. She's only 3 1/2 months old. I thought we could avoid it for a little longer but no such luck. My peditrician suggested salene nose drops & a cool mist humidifier. I was just wondering if anyone knows of some other things that would help comfort her through it.

Johnson & Johnson makes a lotion with vapor-cream that seems to help. You just rub a little on their chest before you put them to bed. Seems to help. (If you've ever used Vicks VapoRub when you were congested, it's like that, only not so harsh). There are also products you can add to the bath that can help.

It sucks doesn't it?! My son is 4 months old and on his second cold.... I breastfeed so I'd hoped to be in the clear with colds... but he goes to daycare 3 days a week so he picks up stuff there. Also, my husband has bad asthma and bronchial problems so I think he rubbed off on our son.
I found when he was reallyl achey, you can give them a dose of baby tylenol. It helps. Also, I've rubbed vicks on the bottom of his feet for the coughing.
Good Luck!

Hi I., I am Elena, mother of 2 teenagers, when flu/cold season comes I boil water with thyme, I put a big pot to cook slow with lots of fresh thyme, and if you have one of the very little slow cooker pot, you can put it(very carefully) in your baby's room, it helps to breath better.
Hope it helps.

My son just went through his first real cold too. That humidifier works wonders. Warm liquids can help too. Those "nose suckers" are great for sucking out the snot from her nose, but my doctor told me if it seems to bother them or even hurt to not do it. The best thing so far for him has been letting him sleep with the humidifier at bedtime and during naps.

I used the cool mist humidifier with my son when he was three months old, and all it did was get his crib soaking wet. The moisture did not stay in the air or get to his nose. I know a doctor will never recommend this because they see it as a safety issue, but I recommend a warm steam humidifier. The warm steam ones are much cheaper than the cool mist humidifiers and they work much better. You can buy them at Wal-Mart for like $12, and you can get menthol liquid (similar to the vapo-rub) to put in the water. This made all the differenc in the world for us, as it kept the air in his room moist and helped keep the mucouse loose. Also, use the salene drops to loosen mucous in tthe nose and suction it aggressively. I would not recommend any sort of cold medication, as the doses are so low for infant that young that they are really not effective.

Hi I.,
Your pediatrician is right that there is not much else you can do but there is a way to prevent future colds. The best solution to any illness is to build the immune system.
There are numerous household items that break down the immune system. Cleaning products, bath and body products, laundry detergents and especially chlorine bleach, are terribly damaging to the immune system. They break down the immune system, the neurological system and the respiratory system.
Lysol has Agent Orange in it, chlorine bleach was invented by our military to kill people, Pledge and Windex do neurological damage. Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo (along with most J and J products) and even Gerber's Grins and Giggles has Quaternium-15 in them which is a known cancer causing agent. Q-15 is a cheap preservative that releases formaldehyde.
Detoxing your home is simple and can be very inexpensive. I wish I had known this when I was a young mother. My kids don't get sick anymore. My 15 year old will even babysit sick children because she know she won't get sick. If you're interested in specific inofrmation, let me know. I'd be glad to help!
Regards,
M.

Like the response said before Vicks Vapor Rub...Just get a glob, and rub it on her feet, then put socks on! It's a little messy, but it works. Last time I had a cold, I tried it on myself to see if it really did any good. I slept all night and woke up the next morning without any congestion. When my boys got their first little cold, I rubbed it on their feet, put them in bed and they slept all night! Just a little runny nose in the morning! I put some more on that morning and the cold seemed to go away in a day or two. Since she is so little, I wouldn't rub any on her chest, just her feet. It sounds crazy...I know I thought so too! But it's worth a try, and very cheap!!

That's about it. I also prop mine up when he sleeps. Sometimes even sitting in a steamy bathroom for 20 min while the shower is running helped too. Just make sure the temp doesn't go up or get too high then you could possibly be looking at an ear infection. Otherwise the cold could last up to 10 days. It seems like forever while you're going thru it, but it will be over soon.
God Bless,
R.
