First Cold

I think my daughter is getting her first cold. She's only 3 1/2 months old. I thought we could avoid it for a little longer but no such luck. My peditrician suggested salene nose drops & a cool mist humidifier. I was just wondering if anyone knows of some other things that would help comfort her through it.

What can I do next?

Johnson & Johnson makes a lotion with vapor-cream that seems to help. You just rub a little on their chest before you put them to bed. Seems to help. (If you've ever used Vicks VapoRub when you were congested, it's like that, only not so harsh). There are also products you can add to the bath that can help.

Hi I., I am Elena, mother of 2 teenagers, when flu/cold season comes I boil water with thyme, I put a big pot to cook slow with lots of fresh thyme, and if you have one of the very little slow cooker pot, you can put it(very carefully) in your baby's room, it helps to breath better.

Hope it helps.

It sucks doesn't it?! My son is 4 months old and on his second cold.... I breastfeed so I'd hoped to be in the clear with colds... but he goes to daycare 3 days a week so he picks up stuff there. Also, my husband has bad asthma and bronchial problems so I think he rubbed off on our son.

I found when he was reallyl achey, you can give them a dose of baby tylenol. It helps. Also, I've rubbed vicks on the bottom of his feet for the coughing.

Good Luck!

I used the cool mist humidifier with my son when he was three months old, and all it did was get his crib soaking wet. The moisture did not stay in the air or get to his nose. I know a doctor will never recommend this because they see it as a safety issue, but I recommend a warm steam humidifier. The warm steam ones are much cheaper than the cool mist humidifiers and they work much better. You can buy them at Wal-Mart for like $12, and you can get menthol liquid (similar to the vapo-rub) to put in the water. This made all the differenc in the world for us, as it kept the air in his room moist and helped keep the mucouse loose. Also, use the salene drops to loosen mucous in tthe nose and suction it aggressively. I would not recommend any sort of cold medication, as the doses are so low for infant that young that they are really not effective.

Hi I. ~

Also try sitting in a steamy bathroom to help with the conjestion/stuffy nose, and elevating her mattress a tad where she lays her head.

Oh the first cold is really the worst! But it is much harder ton the parents I think!
The humidifier is very important--it keeps the mucus loose. I would only use the nose drop for the same reason--if she seems congested but isn't runny.

Besides that, just monitor her temp and call the Dr. if it she gets one, if she seems to be getting worse or she gets a dry cough.

Like I said it's much harder on us as parents to watch them go through it, then it actually is for them. :)

Hi I.,

Your pediatrician is right that there is not much else you can do but there is a way to prevent future colds. The best solution to any illness is to build the immune system.

There are numerous household items that break down the immune system. Cleaning products, bath and body products, laundry detergents and especially chlorine bleach, are terribly damaging to the immune system. They break down the immune system, the neurological system and the respiratory system.

Lysol has Agent Orange in it, chlorine bleach was invented by our military to kill people, Pledge and Windex do neurological damage. Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo (along with most J and J products) and even Gerber's Grins and Giggles has Quaternium-15 in them which is a known cancer causing agent. Q-15 is a cheap preservative that releases formaldehyde.

Detoxing your home is simple and can be very inexpensive. I wish I had known this when I was a young mother. My kids don't get sick anymore. My 15 year old will even babysit sick children because she know she won't get sick. If you're interested in specific inofrmation, let me know. I'd be glad to help!

Regards,

M.

The cool mist humidifier is great but you have to get one that works. My girlfriend spent a fortune and hers did the same thing as the other poster-soaked the room. We have a $20 ReliOn from wal-mart and it works exactly like it's supposed to. Use the saline, the aspirator, I would avoid any type of cold meds (esp. since they started pulling these off the shelves like crazy) as little as she is.

The baby Vicks vapor rub is awesome and I think you have to be 3 months or older to use it. It has made such a difference for us! Good luck!

Like the response said before Vicks Vapor Rub...Just get a glob, and rub it on her feet, then put socks on! It's a little messy, but it works. Last time I had a cold, I tried it on myself to see if it really did any good. I slept all night and woke up the next morning without any congestion. When my boys got their first little cold, I rubbed it on their feet, put them in bed and they slept all night! Just a little runny nose in the morning! I put some more on that morning and the cold seemed to go away in a day or two. Since she is so little, I wouldn't rub any on her chest, just her feet. It sounds crazy...I know I thought so too! But it's worth a try, and very cheap!!

Hi I.,

My family takes the natural route. We use essential oils to help with the cough and stuffiness. If you are nursing your baby, you should consider adding some high in vitamin C foods to your diet: Fresh oranges, strawberries, etc. Then those good nutrients will pass to baby through your milk. :0)

Hope this helps.

My son just went through his first real cold too. That humidifier works wonders. Warm liquids can help too. Those "nose suckers" are great for sucking out the snot from her nose, but my doctor told me if it seems to bother them or even hurt to not do it. The best thing so far for him has been letting him sleep with the humidifier at bedtime and during naps.

That's about it. I also prop mine up when he sleeps. Sometimes even sitting in a steamy bathroom for 20 min while the shower is running helped too. Just make sure the temp doesn't go up or get too high then you could possibly be looking at an ear infection. Otherwise the cold could last up to 10 days. It seems like forever while you're going thru it, but it will be over soon.
God Bless,
R.

Hey I.,
Make sure you use a Nasal Aspirator to assist in the cleansing of the nostrils. Also try Triaminic Nite Time GRAPE kind. I believe 1/4 of a teaspoon, but check with the Doc first. Other than that ride it out. Good Luck! N.

Keeping her nasal passages clear are the number one thing. I would use a "snot sucker" on my son the whole time he was eating to help keep his breathing easier and more comfy. A cool mist humidifier is a big thing, it really helps. We would sit in the bathroom when daddy was showering and the humid warm air drained a lot of snot. I also took showers with him to do some drainage. Warm soothing baths seemed to help. Most of all I ended up holding him alot because laying down was very uncomfortable for him to breathe. The swing and pumpkin seats are a better position for her and will help prevent it settling in her sinuses and causing an ear infection.

Sorry you have to go through this, I know there is nothing worse than having a sick baby that you just can not do anything to take it away. :(

If you are breastfeeding, you can increase your consumption of spicy foods/drinks and herbal teas (which will then enter your breast milk and alleviate cold/flu symptoms). If you are not breastfeeding, give your infant a diluted herbal tea (mint works very well) that has been heated. Other hot or warm liquids are also helpful--even hot water!---because they loosen mucus, etc.. Whether breastfeeding or not, be sure that your child drinks plenty of fluids. Then if your child continues to run a fever, have diarrhea, etc., consult your physician.

Call up your pediatrician's office and ask for the appropriate amount of Tylenol your daughter should take, based upon her age and weight. Yes, saline drops and a cool mist humidifier work. Also, the humidity from daily baths will help congestion. You can also put a little lavendar in the bath water; helps calm nerves, hers and yours. I swear by it for my kids!

Hello I., I have 5 boys and two girls. 17 to 7 weeks old. When a cold seems to be in the making I use baby vicks vapor rub. I rub it on their back and their chest. This helps their breathing at night.

That is the best you can do. Highlands make a C+ cold tablet that I gavemy little man when he had stuffy nose. They are all natural, but the directions are for 1 year old and above so I gave him one tablet. The other thing is they told me to use some vicks, but I didn't use that I got the vapor plug in stuff. Johnson's also makes a vapor bath stuff. Of course tylenol. Good luck. I know how much it stinks not being able to do anything for them.

With my first my doctor told me to take her in the bathroom with me when I took my shower and let the steem help loosen up the stuff. It worked a little because she would have green stuff pooring out of her nose but only for the few minutes that we were in the steemy room then the rest of the day she was stuffy. I would steem up the bathroom a few times a day and sit in there with her when it was real bad but like I said it only helps momentarily. You could give it a try if you would like.

There is also a bath time scent like the lavender one, it is menthol like vics vapor rub. I put this in my daughters bath when she was sick. It is gentle so it doesn't irritate the skin. Johnson and Johnson carries it for sure. You can find it at Wal-mart.
