Finding a Preschool

L.L. asks from Sandy, UT

We are moving back to Sandy, UT from Florida at the beginning of August. I have a four year old son who is due to start preschool in the fall. I am trying to find a good preschool program but am having a hard time over the internet. I want something that has a nurturing, kind environment and is know for teaching kids and not some 'daycare situation'. I have no problem with daycares, but thats not what Im looking for. Ive looked at some preschools via GreatSchools.net and many of them, or the elementary schools they are in, have very low ratings, grades or success rates. I am open to the West Jordan, Sandy, Draper, South Jordan areas. I want it to be in a good, safe area. Do any moms in the area have any preschoolers and have any suggestions? I've been a SAHM for 2 1/2 years now, and my son is on the shy, insecure side when it comes to being without me, so obviously its imperative that we find a place with an understanding and nurturing staff. Thanks so much for any input.

What can I do next?

There is a preschool in the Fort Union area called Childrens Academy that I cannot say enough about. I moved my kids around a few times in preschool /daycare trying to find the best place. This one I loved. Full disclosure - my sister works there, which was part of what made me so comfortable with it, but the entire staff was very warm, spoke to me at the end of every day to give me an idea how the day went, and really interact well with the kids. You can also peek at your kids online during the day, just to see how things are going. My youngest son, who spent most of his early years at this school, has really excelled since moving up to kindergarten. They often have a waiting list, but were also really flexible with me when I needed to adjust my hours.
Another place we went part-time, if that's more what you're looking for, was Daybreak Arts Academy in Daybreak (South Jordan). They are also great and flexible and offer a lot of different programs and activities, which keeps the kids engaged (they even have their own garden). They also offer the ability to watch your kids online during the school day. I would highly recommend either of these programs.

This will be my 5th year running a preschool out of my home in South Jordan. I am a previous elementary school teacher with my Masters in Education. I usually do not have any spots this time of year, but I held back on registration when we were surprised with a pregnancy. We were trying to figure out the schedule for next year. Although I will be taking November and December off we will just be starting a month early in Aug and going a month longer in June. Check out more information on my blog, including some parent reviews and give me a call if you are interested. Good luck with the BIG move! ###-###-#### http://cgardenpreschool.blogspot.com/

My son did Challenger in Holladay, and we loved it. They have a location in Sandy too. It is more of an "academic" school, but very well rounded, and the learning environment is fun - e.g. they sing songs that help them memorize things. My son came home with drawings/art projects and such, that were related to what he was learning at school - e.g. the solar system, or African Sahara animals. It is fairly structured too, which worked well for my son, but his teacher for pre-K was awesome - very kind and nurturing. Much depends on the teacher though, and you don't always know what you're going to get there (or most any preschool really). The school director sort of sets the tone, but it's the teacher that matters most.
