Just looking to see if this sounds familiar to anyone.... My 1st grader had a fever last Tuesday eve - 103.5. each day w/ Advil it would go to normal and she'd wake up w/ no fever. Slept through all nights. Only other symptom is a cough (not horrible) and occasionally says her chest hurts. After 1 doctor visit and one Urgent Care visit, I'm told it's a virus. Ears, lungs, urine are all clear - which is great. She did have her flu shot as well. So, I guess I continue to wait and see. Anyone experience a virus like this? Any other thoughts? thanks!!!

What can I do next?

We haven't had a virus just like what you have described, but certainly have had viruses that had few symptoms aside from a fever that persisted for several days.

You took her to the doctor and they checked everything out, so at this point, waiting seems like all you can do.

It can be hard for parents to remember that fever is not a scary or dangerous thing. Fever is a sign that your child's immune system is working on eliminating this virus; it is a carefully arranged and healthy response of the human body.

With that in mind, the decision to medicate a fever should be based on your child's behavior more than the number on the thermometer. If your child is miserable, then absolutely give the Advil, but if she has a fever and is comfortable, you might think about holding off on the meds and letting her body do what it is doing. Suppressing the fever is, in a way, suppressing the body's natural way of fighting the pathogen. Keeping your daughter well-hydrated and allowing her to rest is more effective than Advil in term of getting rid of the virus. Again, if she is uncomfortable, give her the meds, but if not, there is not a magic number above which a fever must be medicated and a 103.5 degree fever is not dangerous in and of itself.

Here's an article that might be helpful for this:

I hope that she gets to feeling better soon!

Mono comes to mind.
My sister had it for most of 1st grade (almost a whole year).
Her fever would come and go.
Every time she started to feel better she'd relapse and end up on bed rest again.
I carried most of her homework to and from school for her so she could do it at home.

A friend is going through this same thing with her 6 yr old. Spiking high fever off and on. No other symptoms at all. Her ped said it's viral. Urgent care said it's viral.

Did they swab for Influenza ? Sounds like Influenza A that my son had . He had a low grade fever off and on for days after the initial high fever . I would take her back to the doctor to double check . Good luck :)

Yes- this happened when my then 4-year-old was in preschool. It turned into pneumonia, even though the first visit had clear lungs. Keep an eye on it, follow up with the doctor every few days if the fever stays. My son was sick for almost a month, breathing treatments, antibiotics, no fun!
