Fever for 3 Days with Fluid in Ear

I would definalty be proactive. Make an appointment with an ENT. My son had fluid in his ears for about 6 months and his regular Dr. didn't think much of it, but when I went to the ENT he was signed up to get tubes right away. I still wonder how his development would've been different had he gotten tubes earlier.

Sounds like something viral. Keep an eye on his ears because if the fluid builds up too much, it could burst the TM (Typanic Membrane-"eardrum") & fluid will leak out. THere are a few things you can try: an onion poultice- cut an onion in half, warm up it up- but not too hot, hold each half to the ears for up to 10 minutes. You can wrap a towel over the onions to reduce any irritation to eyes. This will help draw out & reduce fluid in ears. If you need more help, come see me. I can't speak for all, but all pediatricians I know want to see kids with a 3 day history of fever. That is the rule in my office and others I know of. I would go back in for sure.

In my experience, the doctors office will probably just re-check her to see if she has developed any sort of infection with the prolonged fever. Be prepared for them to send you home again without any medication. If she doesn't have any infection, they won't and shouldn't give you any antibiotics. A low fever in a child is not cause for alarm by itself (101-102 is considered low for a child) and antibiotics won't help a cold. Don't be afraid to take her back in to be checked but be glad if you are told she doesn't need any medication and to let it run its course. My kids have been sick quite a bit and have had colds and fevers for what seemed like months on end but have never once been on antibiotics. I am glad that my pediatrician's office doesn't over-prescribe antibiotics when the kids don't need them. If they get them when they don't need them, they won't work as well when they do. This happened to my son a week or so ago and because he also had some noise in his chest the dr prescribed antibiotic and nebulizer treatments. You may have to keep pushing on the dr to do something different.

I don't want to scare you, but we just went through this. My daughter had an unexplained fever for 10 days. We went to the ped 3 times and had many tests done. Everything from nasal cavity swabs, to strep test, to chest x-ray, to blood drawn...they found nothing! They finally admitted her to the hospital when her temp reached 105.1 (ear thermometer)-we gave her tylenol and 40 min later when she was in triage it was only at 103.8. They observed her for two days, gave her fluids, antibiotic, and repeated many tests. Still found NOTHING!

Keep taking her back to the doctor and ask them to keep looking for the reason. I didn't settle for the "its just a virus" because the fever kept coming back. They found her white blood cell count was high and we have to keep watching her. Any signs of fever, vomit, diarrhea (sp?) we have to take her back immediately to the hospital. They will then refer us to Infectious Diseases at Luthern General.

A fever is just a symptom of something else. It's her body trying to fight off some type of infection. Keep her comfortable and don't let it go. I called my doc just about every other day, or when I noticed a new symptom. I know you feel like you're bothering them, but it's their JOB! Your baby is the most important thing, not the doctors opinion of how much you have bothered them.

Your child has a medium grade fever let it do its job and fight the fluid and keep your child comfy. You do not say old your little is but if he is under 2 plenty of fluids in any form and lots of TLC and this will pass. Good Luck

I just went through this with both my boys (age 6 and 2) over the holidays. Their colds lasted at least two weeks, the fevers 5+ days each and fluid in their ears. Went to the pediatrician multiple times because I too have always followed the advice that you need to take them in if they run a fever for more than three days. Unfortunately (or fortunately!) it was just a virus that lingered on and on...They are finally both healthy. Just keep a close eye on your child for a change in symptoms and responsiveness. Fluid in the ears is normal in children when they have a cold because the way their ear canal does not slope to drain (this will change as they get older). Decongestant should help alleviate some of the fluid. A fever does not necessarily mean an infection that requires antibiotics, it may just be the body fighting off the cold. Definately keep an eye on her and keep in contact with the doctor's office. My daughter used to have fevers up around 105. The doctor said as long as she is responsive and Tylenol will bring the fever down some, it is not a urgent situation.

yep this is totally normal procedure for drs office not wantign to give out antibiotics right away. if the fever does persist for moer than three days you should be able to just call back and not have to go in and they will give you the antibiotics. please call it is time for them.

Just went throught the exact same issue. I called my doctor office on Monday was informed to give her tylenol or motrin. Tuesday I took her to a sick baby appointment just to make sure everything was fine. Tuesday I recieved a call from her daycare her fever had come back and it was 102.7, took her straight to the ER, they said it was just a bad cold and informed me to continue giving her tylenol or motrin. Wednesday same thing when she woke up Thursday screaming and her fever was 103.7 I rushed her back to the ER and told them I was not leaving until they told me what was wrong. They ran test and did a chest x-ray which came back fine. When they checked her ears again they discovered an ear infection. They give her amoxicylen to take for 10 days. I would take her to another doctor or the ER (we went to Children Memorial in Lincoln Park, Chicago). Fevers are a sign of some sort of infection/virus. Good Luck.
