Im making a cake for a harvest festival at my church, I want to make leaves out of fondant but dont know how to make them look real. So I was thinking, can I use fake fall leaves and decorate the cake with as long as I tell people to take them off? lol.

Anyone know how to make the leaves look real, but has to be cheap to do.

What can I do next?

I think the fake ones would be fine and would be very festive. I used to have a dirt cake for birthdays in a flower pot and we would top it with fake flowers.

No idea how to make the leaves look real, but fondant ones would taste good too.

I haven't read the other posts so I may be repeating someone, but I would make the leaves out of fondant. Just buy a leaf cookie cutter (I'm sure wilton makes some) cut out the leaves and draw the veins with a skewer. Then paint the leaves with food coloring. They have a powder food coloring that would work, try hobby lobby.

I was just wondering what kind of cake it will be? Fall flavored? I know a simple recipe that is wonderful in the fall (if you don't care that it is not from scratch!).

One (1) box spice cake mix
One (1) can pumpkin (I think it is 15 oz)
One (1) bag cinnamon chips (optional)
Mix together ONLY THESE INGREDIENTS (not the egg, oil, etc needed for the mix) and bake as you would any cake... 350* for 25-30 min. I like it in a bundt pan, then I either dust it with powdered sugar or make a thin glaze to pour over. It would look great covered in fondant and leaves!

For the leaves: you could get a few of the fake leaves, cut some leaves out of fondant with the same leaf cookie cutter(s), then press the fake leaves into the fondant to create the veins. Dye the fondant whatever colors you want.

For example: Get a maple leaf cookie cutter and a fake maple leaf around the same size. Cut and press that leaf. Do the same with other kinds of leaves. Make sense?

I googled it and found this....it's for wedding cakes, but that shouldn't matter. Good luck! =0) :

Making Edible Fall Wedding Cake Leaves
For those who are making their own wedding cakes, making edible leaves is fairly easy. One way to do so is to make fondant icing and cut leaf shapes using cookie cutters. Dye the fondant the color you wish (brown, yellow, orange, red); more experienced decorators could try their hand at airbrushing leaf colors for a realistic look.

Another way to make edible cake leaves is to melt candy disks. Simply purchase yellow, orange, and red disks from you local craft or cooking store. Follow the directions on the back of the package. You may choose to shape your leaves by rolling a dough recipe out and using cookie cutters; or simply melt the disks into candy molds. Chocolate frosted cakes could even be decorated using melting chocolate poured into molds. Deep molds could be used for a 3-D effect.

Finally, you can make shaped gumpaste leaves to add to your cake. No matter what kind of leaves you end up making, be sure to store them in airtight containers (and possibly refrigerate, depending upon ingredients) for safekeeping before the wedding. A good rule of thumb is that most edible decorations can be kept for up to two weeks; less for those that have perishable ingredients.

I looked in my little arsenal of bookmarked pages (I do cake decorating) and this one looks like the most straight forward. http://www.bakespace.com/recipes/detail/Fondant-Fall-Leav... I prefer using lemon extract to paint with rather than vodka...I know the alcohol evaporates out, but I can't get it out of my head that kids may ingest the vodka, so I stick to lemon extract.

And there is nothing wrong with fake leaves either. Just be sure they aren't glittery.
