Hi Moms ~ Can anybody recommend an eye doctor that they really like? Preferably one that specializes in macular degeneration. Mine just retired and I'd like to find one closer to our home. We are in Bellflower right next to the Cerritos/Lakewood borders. Lakewood or Cerritos would be fine. Thank you so much for any recommendations.

Hi R.,

I know you wanted a doctor in your area but if you want a doctor who does lots of clinical research and therefore has cutting edge technology, I would recommend you drive about 20-25 minutes to Torrance to see Dr. Ron Gallemore.

My husband just had a detached retina and it affected the macula. Luckily Dr. Gallemore is macular specialist and has longer office hours than most in our area. They take most insurances and are open on Saturdays. Dr. G was able to start treatment on a Friday instead of making us wait until the next Monday which ophthalmologists we consulted with first wanted us to do.

Dr. G is also involved in vitamin research and has developed formulas to aid with diabetic macular degeneration. My husband got the other formula which helps slow down cataract growth. He's only 46 and has cataracts growing already! And a procedure he had done will accelerate cataract growth so we have to watch for that now.

Retina Macula Institue Office is located at: 4201 Torrance Blvd. just west of the Little Company of Mary Hospital. Phone is ###-###-####. Office is pretty busy so if you want to get out in less than an hour, take the earliest appointment available in the morning. The building charges for parking on weekdays and you can get your parking ticket validated for one free hour at the office.

Hope you are able to get the best treatment possible wherever you go!

:-) K. H.

Dr. Pitluck - Cerritos. He is in the shopping center across from the Cerritos Mall near Chuck E Cheese. Have been seeing him for many years.

I know of a great practice! Lakewood Eye Physcians. They are in Lakewood and also Los Alamitos. Five great physcians and have been in practice for many years and they do treat macular degeneration and they also have retina and pediatric eye doctors in the office. Hope that helps!

Hi R.!
I want to recommend Dr. Mc Beath, of Carson, Mc Beath and Boswell. They are in Long Beach, Bixby Knolls area.
Although my daughter was diagnosed with Stargardt's macular dystrophy, and we now have to take her to pediatric retinal specialists, Dr. Mc Beath was out favorite doctor during the madness of the diagnosis.
My step-father also had diabetic retinopathy, and was a regular visitor at this practice.!
Have a good day, and good luck to you!

I cannot recommend a doctor, but I just talked to my uncle who lives in Milwaukee. He and four of his siblings have macular generation. As he is the youngest, he told me that there is a new treatment where they give a shot in the eye for three months. His eyesight is improving significantly after only one shot. It can only be done when the disease is at the beginning stages and is new and not all doctors are doing it yet. Make sure you find someone who does this procedure. L.
