Experience with Mirena?

One Mom's post about having another child after Mirena raises a question for me -- has anyone had positive or negative experiences with IUD? I am interested in using an IUD but would like to be aware of the drawbacks before I go through the time and effort of having the procedure.

What can I do next?

I just had the Mirena inserted 2 months ago. I bled for the first month but everything is great now. I was extremely worried it would affect my mild supply but it did not. The procedure was not very painful at all with only minimal cramping that evening that Tylenol covered. Unfortunately my insurance didn't cover it but they have very reasonable prices with convenient payment plans available. If you plan to keep it for an extended period of time like I do it will pay for itself over copays for BCP. Good luck in whatever you decide!

Hello. I just got an IUD Mirena place 3 wks ago. Having it inserted was a little uncomfortable but I have had no problems since then. I love it. It is so nice not to have to take a pill everyday. My gyne has had one for 4 yrs and says it is the best birth control she has ever had so I decided to give it a try. As with anything there are risks if side effects. I would recommend checking out mirena.com. The site tells you all about it, very informative.
Good luck, hope this helps.

I love the Mirena IUD. I have had it for 4 years and am really sad becuase next year I have to have it removed. I will probably get it re-inserted if Dh and I decide not to try again for awhile. I have not had any problems with it. I do not have periods and have occasional spotting (which is very light) no pad or panty liner needed. Dh cannot feel the string so he also has no complaints.

I had mirena inserted for 2 years. I loved the shorter and lighter periods, but after the first year I noticed my hair was falling out alot. I also noticed that I had severe night sweats, which I never had in my life and hot flashes. I was only 27 years old.I would soak my shirts from front to back. I also had bad acne on my chest and back!
The synthoms only got worse day after day. I didnt know what was wrong with me, until my husband told me to look into mirena. I went online and found a web site of women that experienced the same synthoms that I had. I had the mirena removed this past July and now my head is full of hair. I no longer have acne on my chest or back, no more hot flashes and night sweats. Please research the mirena before you have it inserted.

I've had my Mirena for almost 2 years. I've not had any problems with it.
After about 6 months of having it, my mestrual cycle stopped. I still spot from time to time, but it's only every 3-4 months.
I'm glad I went with the IUD. We plan on having another child in about a year, then we've already decided to go with the Mirena again.

I had the Mirena for 3 years. I had a copper IUD in the past. When they put it in you will have some cramping and spotting similar to menstration. It has strings that hang down for the removal and to check it placement monthly. If your significant other can fell them during intercourse you can have them trimmed.....I did. The Mirena cut my periods in half! I loved having the IUD because we hate all the inconvenient and expensive other forms. Also I am sensitive to hormones like the pill, depo, and norplant and I had no adverse reactions to Mirena....I was concerned initially but it did not affect me. My insurance covered it 100%. I was pregnant within 3 months of the removal.

I have an IUD and I must say I love it. I don't have to think about it and I've had it in for almost 2 years now. I also have met other people that have one and they also love it. I would go for it.
