My 8 year old son went number 2 in his pants in front of his friends. I worry about him being embarrassed and not wanting to go to school. He is a very popular kid and he is liked by girls and boys. Is there any advice for me to help him with this situation?

What can I do next?

Oh no! How embarrassing! I would share with him O. of YOUR embarrassing moments from childhood and have your husband do the same. Try to reinforce that it is not the end of the world and that in a few days, the kids will have something else on which to focus. Poor kid!

How would he react to making it an inside family joke? It might lighten the mood if he''s that kind of kid.

(On a side note--I wonder why this happened? Did he just wait too long? I have a friend with a 7 yo son who was just diagnosed with encopresis. her ped said it was very common around that age. Just a thought.)

Poor kid--what an awful thing to have happen. I think the same thing would apply to an eight year old in this situation that would apply to an adult. Laugh it off. Kids being kids, they will make fun of him. If he can laugh about it (or pretend to laugh about it), it will be forgotten a lot faster since the other kids won't be getting any rise out of him by teasing. This could turn out to be a great life lesson in empathy for your son. When it happens to another kid, you can be assured your son won't be the teaser. Good for you for trying to help him through this! Good luck!

My 9yr old daughter peed in her pants by accident about 4months ago during recess, in front of EVERYONE! She was wearing tight pink yoga pants which showed everything. At the time, she just wanted to curl up and die. I felt so bad for her, but kept telling her it happens, it's not a big deal, in a week everyone will forget about it. She didn't want to go back to class after it happened, but I told her that if she hid and acted embarrassed, it would be worse than if she just brushed it off (even though inside she was cringing). She went back to class with a fresh pair of pants and held her head high. And I was right. Everyone forgot within a week, nobody teased her (in fact, several of her friends were extra nice to her because they wanted her not to feel bad), she didn't lose any friends and now it's a totally forgotten event. Even I'd forgotten all about it until just now when I read this post...So let your son know that even though he's embarrassed NOW (and it's ok to feel embarrassment, it's part of human nature), it WILL pass, he WILL get over it and in the long run will be mostly forgotten. I hope your son is able to put this behind him soon!

So sorry!! Poor kid. My suggestion is to ask him how he wants to handle it. If he says he is just hoping eveyone forgets or wants to act like nothing happened, that's fine. However, I would suggest to him that he has something in mind in case a kid says something. For example, if a kid says, "Dude I can't believe you pooped your pants", he can respond with, "I know, that was crazy! Must have been some bad beans" or "I can't believe that happened, talk about embarrassing." If he can laugh along with them, it reduced any teasing that may come his way. I would love to be able to tell you the kids won't say anything, but it only takes one. My son was having issues with a kid who liked to say mean things to him. We did some role playing which helped A LOT!!! I would help him come up with ways he would react if this kid said, "You are a loser". It helped him to be prepared and not react in a way that just fueled the fire. I agree, too, that if you share your own embarrassing moment it might ease his mind. Pray that the kids all forget what happened, but prepare him if they don't. Good luck!!!

The kids in school will forget about it in about 5 minutes. Kids that age have accidents some times. If you don't worry about it, he won't either. :)
