Embarassed to Ask...

I am kind of embarassed to ask but am very curious so here goes:
If a woman is pregnant and her husband likes to suck on her breasts during sex, does he take away all the colostrum and there will only be real milk when baby arrives? Isn't there only a certain amount of colostrum and then it's all gone? I know it is supposed to come after delivery but just wondered if it could come before if that is the only "sex" the hubby can get since it's so uncomfortable late in pregnancy.

What can I do next?

Hi M., I think you have gotten some good advice & & will have plenty of colostrum.... I just wanted to stress what a few had also mentioned. You didn't mention how far along you are, but nipple stimulation can cause pre-term labor... I had my first daughter 5 weeks early, she is fine now, engertic 3 year old, but spending 15 days in the nicu was the hardest thing I have done.... So if you are past 37 weeks, and ready for that little one to arrive then I say go for it... other wise, just be careful.

I know this is an embarassing question to ask, but I can assure you that if you have the question, at least 5 other women are wondering as well, and are too afraid to ask...;)

I don't know the answer, but I would bet the other posters are correct. If you can get up the nerve, and really want to know for sure, don't hesitate to ask your ob/gyn. That's what your doc is there for, really!

I applaud you for having the courage to post this question, and congrats on your pregnancy!

Well I'm not shy so here goes. One I had sex right up until a few days before our daughter was born. It wasn't uncomfortable to me so long as we spiced it up with different positions. Two no it won't take away the colostrum or at least it never did mine. Usually the most of the colostrum is produced after delivery or at least thats what I've been told. I had fluid come out of my breasts as early as the first trimester and I still had colostrum after delivery. so Hope that helps to ease your mind a little bit.

You will have plenty of colostrum for your baby. Your husband won't drink it all. Production of colostrum doesn't start in earnest until AFTER delivery. What you are making now is just a little pre-colostrum, nothing in volume to what your body will make after the baby comes. (I teach this stuff in nursing school-milk production is initiated by hormones, and the hormones aren't released until the birth of the placenta.) Don't worry, plenty of milk to come.

I don't think that is the only colostrum that you will produce . It takes 3 sometimes almost a week for your milk to come in. You produce colostrum untill your milk milk comes in. I think I remember even after my milk came in the milk was a yellowish color due to the colostrum in the milk.

Yhe separation of the placenta from the uterine wall is what signals your body that it needs to get prepared to start producing milk. It can take 1 to 5 days for your milk to come in after delivery. And even then, milk production is a supply and demand process. The more milk that is removed from your breasts, the more that is made. Regardless of who is removing the milk (ie baby, breast pump, or even hubby). That's why some women are able to nurse twins or triplets or more. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Heres a simple way to know, the colostrum is yellowish, and what comes out before that is mostly clear. Don't worry. Your milk wont come down until the baby is out :) For me it was 3 days later.

I think you are ok but why not check with your doctor is there are any restrictions late in the pregnancy.
Good Luck.

Colostrum is not produced until after the baby is born. However, sucking on your breasts may give you contractions. This could be a good thing if you are very late in pregnancy.

Hey, you've gotten plenty of great, informative responses on your original question around colostrum.

My two cents is that you may find that you are able and more than willing to have sex clear until the end of your pregnancy. And if that's the case, have fun! I was waking my husband up at 2:00 or 4:00 in the morning for some sex and he was thrilled. It never got too uncomfortable for me.

Is your husband getting colostrum out? It is normal to have colostrum already in the end of pregnancy. Also too much nipple stimulation could cause contractions. They could just be braxton hicks, but just be careful. Your body will continue to make milk for the baby, but I'm not sure if all the stimulation is really going to make your milk come in (the true milk). I wouldn't think so because the hormones in your body are still telling your body that you're pregnant. I would ask your OB just to be sure. Although, once you have the baby he will probably need to stop with the nipples and just kiss the breasts because if he is sucking and taking out milk then your body will think you need a ton of milk because of all the stimulation and it'll cause problems for you with being engorged all the time because of the huge production. Good luck.

I don't think you have to worry too much about it. Just be careful though because nipple stimulation can induce labor and you wouldn't want to go into labor too early.
