They do still make iPod Touch (someone said they stopped making them). If you are willing to pay several hundred dollars you can get one with more megabytes of memory. You can also purchase more storage (iCloud) for as low as $.99 a month. I don't know if that would help with his problem of running out of storage for his games.

I'd get him a different apple product with more storage - another ipod touch or an ipad mini. You could get a used one at Game Stop or similar store (they check them out for you to make sure they work).

I bought my boys Samsung Tablets through Barnes and Noble (it was a deal I couldn't pass up). They work great, but i had to set up a new account and pay for every game a second time since I had to go through Google Play this time instead of the IStore. It was the right decision for us, but in your case I'd probably buy another apple product.

ETA - As far as I know Apple is still making the IPod Touch. It's available at Best Buy, Walmart, Target ... and you can buy several colors and 16 mg, 32 mg, 64 mg or even 128 mg. Obviously the more mg's the more expensive, but storage should not be an issue. Although, I agree, if you are thinking of a new phone, giving him your old would probably be the easiest option. My boys still play on my IPhone 4 when they forget to charge their tablet :-)

We let our kids have our old iPhones when we upgraded. At first we just let them play with them as iPods and then eventually as they got a little older we added them to our plan.

Unfortunately, apple stopped making iPod touches. So, you have a few choices.

You could get an iPad mini - the most expensive option but also the option that will probably last the longest.

You can get a refurbished newer iPod touch with more storage from Apple, but keep in mind that within the next year, Apple will probably stop supporting the operating system on this.

Or, you can get a iPhone 5 or 6 and don't give him a cell plan. If you get an iPhone and simply don't attach it to a cell plan, it works as an iPod. This is what both my kids have. When my DH and I updated our phones to a newer one, we gave them the old ones to use as iPods. So - do you want an iPhone 7? You could upgrade and give your son your 6. Or, you can look on the Apple site for refurbished older iPhones or you could look on Craigslist, etc, for old iphones. Again, keep in mind that Apple will probably stop supporting the iOS for iPhone 5 next fall, so that is on borrowed time just like the 5th generation iTouch.

ETA: Sorry I was wrong about the iTouches (thanks to another poster for correcting me). I swear I thought they stopped at the 5th generation. But they do still make them, and you can get the 6th generation on the Apple refurbished site in addition to buying new the 7th generation.

Buy an iPod Touch with larger capacity (or iPad, if he would enjoy that). As Gidget says, he can keep playing the same games that he already owns. It can last him a few years. And then when the time is right (when he is a teenager), you can get him an iPhone, and the whole system will be very familiar to him.

ETA: Apple did NOT stop making iPod Touch, the link to buy is here:

First - password protect your device.
No 8 yr old needs to have uncontrolled access to download anything any time he wants and I don't care what device he ends up playing on.
Second - I'd be careful about the games he has access to over the internet and who has access to him through the games.
Maybe you should get him a gaming system.

We're in the same boat with our youngest, same age.

That's the deal - she has to delete if she wants to download a new game. She has a very outdated model (our kids pass down their electronics).

I myself am not upgrading at this age because I think ipods are the way to go at this age. My kids progressed to ipad minis but when they were older. They are more to fix should they drop them. That's my thinking, and they are more expensive. Remember, he'll want to take it to his friends, etc. so if he can delete for a while (how many games does a kid really need?) then I'd stick with the ipod.
