Electric Blankets

If you have one do you put additional blankets or a comforter on top of it when in use? I recently bought one and my girlfriend was shocked that I use it with our bed comforter and that I don't remove the comforter first!

What can I do next?

I used to use one and I liked it over my sheet but under the comforter.. Remember, heat rises.. Cold falls.

I like heated mattress pads better.
The heat rises to keep you warm and your usual comforter holds it in.
A lot of the time we use it only 20 min before bedtime to warm the bed up, then it's off for the rest of the night.

I put the electric blanket over the comforter. I like the weight of a comforter on my body the electric blanket is just to thin for comfort.

If you read the warning labels, they tell you not to put other covers on top of an electric blanket - it traps too much heat and can cause them to short out.

When I was a kid my sister and I had an electric blanket on our bed and we woke up with our bed on fire. I would never use one. Having said that... can you turn it on before you go to bed just to warm things up and then have it off for the night?

I used to keep the electric blanket under the comforter. I woke up one night to a "zzzzt" sound. The blanket was shorting! I got scared, so I threw it away.

Now I don't use one anymore, I just throw a smaller blanket in the dryer to warm it up. Then I put it under the comforter to warm up my spot before I get in!

Why would I remove the comforter first? It's keeping the heat in! I always trap the heat with a comforter on top of my electric blanket.

I have the type with 20 different heating levels, so I can adjust it to my exact specifications. I love turning it on before I get into bed. :-)

Skip the electric blanket and use a down comforter instead. Still snuggly warm without any of the potential health/fire scares.

I cannot imagine using an electric blanket. I would be overcooked to say the least, so I cannot answer.

Its my understanding that you should only have a bedspread over an electrice blanket - check the owners manual that came with it - if you threw it out go online you can find it at the company's website. Next time you need a blanker get a down comforter if you don't have allergies. They are soooooo much nicer than electric blankets.

Heat rises. That means if you don't have something on top of the blanket the heat will go up and not down on to your body. A minimal amount will but the blanket will run more and cost more. It is more effective at heating and costs less if you have something like a comforter on top of it.

Be careful of electric blankets too, a friend of ours didn't check theirs when they put it on for cold weather and they woke up in the middle of the night with their bed on fire. They made it out and the bedroom took most of the damage but they had a broken wire. Had they checked it over with even their hands alone they might have felt it.

So be careful and never fold it, roll it when storing.
