Dvmmom--could You Please Tell Me....
What do you feel is the best food to feed my Dachshund? I really would appreciate your advice. The vet I last took my dog to recommended Science Diet or Royal Canine. I really want to feed my dog the very best food I can and really appreciate your time. Thank you very much.

Www.dogfoodadvisor.com is a great website that reviews all dog foods on the market. I am also a vet and love the foods DVMMOM suggested. I also like Orijen. Keep in mind, these foods are more expensive but you don't need to feed as much.
Home-cooking is also an option, I could give you a reference if you are interested.

No prob!
There are a lot of really good foods out there...I like Wellness, Innova, Merrick, Halo, and Blue Buffalo. Those are what I am currently feeding to my dogs and cats (I like to rotate brands). Science Diet and Royal Canin are very good too, as are Eukanuba and Purina Pro Plan, but I am more impressed by what is in the brands listed first, in terms of higher quality ingredients. You can typically find these brands at pet supply stores, like Petco.

I feed our dog Royal Canine. My daughter works for a vet and that is what they recommend. Our dog is a dachshund/Chihuahua mix.

I am sold on canidae dog food. I also add cooked chicken. My German shepherd has a very sensitive stomach and whenever I've tried other foods we have major problems. I also recomend taste of the wild, but is too rich for my dog. But all dogs are different, and you should read ingredients and research what those ingredients do for your dog. Many companies use fillers that can harm your dog. You might also look into a raw food diet, it is what dogs are designed to eat, but can be messy.

our dachy has always had Pro Plan, the chicken flavor, since she was a puppy. She's 12 now and the vet has always said that she's healthy with a nice coat. We started her on the puppy, then moved her to the adult, and now she's on the senior. (I think they call it adult 7+ now).

My long haired mini dachshund loves Wysong (find it online). The shipping is a little steep but I often get codes to give me free shipping and I stock up then! We rotate several of their food types and supplement (as recommended by the diet) with fresh fruits and veggies. Good luck! Note: He needs much less per feeding on this diet than others!

My mom feeds her pomeranians Blue Buffalo. They LOVE it and are very healthy, happy little dogs.
I fed my kitties Blue Buffalo until I found out that it has too much magnesium in it for my old male cat. He started getting struvite crystals in his bladder. So I switched to Royal Canin. They love it too.

You can also look into RAW feeding as well. My dogs have done amazing on it. It cleared up some allergy/itchy skin in our mastiff, turned our sluggish overweight basset into a puppy acting 9 yr old and he weight is prefect now. Our poodle mix loves her RAW food so even little dogs do great on it.
