My daughter's scalp is extremely dry, she has ezcema and nothing the doc suggested helps, it is so dry at times that if i let her she would probably scratch it till it bleeds. I've even tried dousing her head with baby oil, nothing helps. any suggestions?

What can I do next?

My daughter's eczema is mostly caused by her food allergies. It mostly went away once we eliminated her allergens (milk/dairy, eggs). But when its environment related, we used vanicream products. Works great, just google Vanicream. If food allergies are the issue, becareful with creams, most contain nut oils.

Dry watered down head and shoulders shampoo to remove the flakes. then baby oil or johnson's baby lotion to soothe the irration. My daughter has had excema since birth (she's 13 now) and these two things are the only ones that help.

Good luck.

Try Olive Oil... It puts a lot more moisture in the scalp. You have to do it every day for about a week but it should clear up. Make sure after you put the olive oil on that you comb her scalp with a fine tooth comb

Both of my kids have ezcema. It seems to get better as they get older. What works best for them is unsented Dove soap & Eucerin lotion on a regular basis. Frequent washing makes it worse, so you may want to try skipping a day or two between baths. Also, when there is a flair up, lotion can burn (I have ezema myself). So, When it's flaired up, I use A&D ointment or you can try prescription cream. Good luck.

How old is your daughter? I would definately have her allergy tested(ask your doctor when). My daughter has suffered from scoriasis and eczema as well and I have found that avocado oil works best. I use garnier nuctris anti-dandruff shampoo(my doctor approved of using a dandruff shampoo)and every week I rub Burts Bees avocado butter hair treatment on her scalp. It is like $10 a tube so if you want to see if it will work before you buy it, buy an avocado, pit it, and put it in the food processor. Apply some to the scalp, cover head with shower cap or towel and let sit for 10-20 minutes, rinse and wash hair. It is messy(why I bought the cream)but it works for us. Good Luck!

My twins had ezcema and I had to resort to medication - not sure if you have or not. The only thing that worked was a 3 step process. I was prescribed Licoid Lipocream, which is a steroid so it is used very sparingly, but it worked. I applied that when the ezcema was really bad for 2-3 days with cetaphil lotion on top. Once it was getting better I stepped down to Protopic, which is not a steroid, with cetaphil lotion on top. Then it was just straight cetaphil. Sometimes I apply the cetaphil 4-5 times a day.

I hope this helps.

Hi C.,

My son has eczema, and i learned that it is a reaction to a trigger just like hayfever. So things like food, petrolum products, dust, weather, stress can be triggers. After alot of reading I made a list of thingsmy son had eaten during his last major attack. It turned out that eggs are a trigger food for him, once we took him off of eggs for a month he cleared right up. We also switched all of our products (cleaners, body care) to petrolum free products. We use Melaleuca products and it has made such a big difference.

Have you tried Selson Blue or Head and Shoulders? My son had some dry skin and cradle cap and the Dr. told me to try it and it worked.

My brother has extreme siriasus (sp?) and couldn't find anything to help. (It's a skin condition similar to exema, except the dry skin also builds many layers, causing scabs of incredibly dry & dead skin). He recently started using Emu oil (from company Dreamu) and it's working great -- moisturizing, repairing and re-generating the dead and dry skin. it's like an oil, just apply three times a day. it's completely natural and we haven't seen a single side effect.

It might be worth a try!

Also, there's a store called Athena's Home Novelties, they sell adult novelties but also cosmetic and bath products, they have a "Lavender" stick which is very moisturizing as well, and helped a friend of mine with ezcema.

Hope you find something that works for her!

Hi C.,
My daughter had the same thing as an older infant. The doctor at the hospital suggested olive oil. I was a bit hesitant but we tried it and it worked.
Just a small amount, a teaspoon or two worked into the scalp and let sit for a while then rinse. We did this a few times and use a small amount of shampoo (Aveno) and within a couple of treatments it was gone. We still do it once a week to maintain her scalp and are very happy with the results. Good Luck!

Hi C.,

One suggestion would be to go to Melaleuca.com. This is a wellness company that specializes in products that are toxin and phosphate free. They have everything from bath and body products to household cleaners. Their cleaners are not abrasive and have none of the harmful chemicals that can be linked to so many diseases. They have a line of hair care that also has a product or two for dry scalps. What makes these products different is "Melaleuca" oil, which is a tea tree oil that has many healing properties. There is even a lotion called "Renew" that when compared to Eucerin, beat them hands down!!! Many people with ezcema use this cream and have had wonderful results. You are required to join as a member before you order, but until the 15th of the month it is only $1!!!!! Take a look and see if there is anything you like. Email me back and let me know if you want to join, I can take you through it. I joined two months ago because of my son's asthma and I can honestly say between the laundry products and some of their household cleaners, it has dramatically improved. Good luck!

I have had good luck with coconut oil, which you can find in the natural foods aisle at the grocery store. It's solid at room temperature, but once you rub a little on your hands it turns liquid. We put it on my daughter's scalp before bed and it was much, much better in the morning.

My child never had this issue, however, I have. I didn't have eczema until my son was born. My hands breakout bad with bumps if I try and scratch a little, and then my skin cracks in numerous places. It's always worse in the winter time. When I went to get it diagnosed my doctor wanted to know if there was anything new I had started using. He said I could be allergic to it and in return have a breakout. After a process of elimination I found out my dish soap (no matter how many times I change it, or what I use) was causing it. So, I use gloves, and the best lotion ever. I've been using it since and LOVE it. I use the Baby Aveeno. I get the unscented with the blue cap. Just recently this year my scalp started doing this as well. I was told to try and use Tea Tree Oil. I did try it, however, it took a little while of use to get better. Hope this helps.

There's a prouct line they sell at the Bath and Body Works in South Shore Plaza in Braintree that is called Mustela. They make an exczema line for babies. One of the products is for cradle cap and there are others for exczema. The line is hypoallergenic and verrrrry good. I have two friends who will buy nothing else but for their kids. Here's a link to it: http://www.bathandbodyworks.com/category/index.jsp?catego.... Best thing is, they have a 100% guarantee, so if you try it and you don't like it I'd be shocked if you didn't) you can bring it back.
