Dry Hair

I was wondering if anyone else went through "hair changes" while they were pregnant and after? When I was pregnant, I had very full, shiny, hair and I'm going through a "phase" where my hair is bone dry on the ends and looks like it just went through a shredder. I've tried everything the stylist told me to do (expensive moisture shampoos, etc), but nothing seems to work. Note: I am a very impatient person, so maybe I'm not trying things long enough. I can't always skip a day of shampooing my hair, because it will be very "greasy" at the roots and look HORRIBLE. I'm just ready to shave it all off! Any ideas or anyone else dealing with this?
Thanks :-)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow! I'm excited how many responses I received and how quickly they showed up! Thank you all!!! Sometimes you just feel like, "am I the only one", but you aren't. I have tried the olive oil approach (a friend had suggested it), but I think I will try the mayo/olive oil combo and let it sit under the shower cap. I tend to not give things long enough, because of my impatience, so I'll try to stick with it a bit longer for good results. I also had the issue when my son was 3-4 months old, my hair started falling out (mainly around the top of my forehead), but it did finally grow back. I try not to stress out about stuff like this, but it can be so darn depressing. Especially when I look back at old pictures and see how pretty my hair used to be. :-(
Thanks, Ladies!

Hi K.,
One thing that may help that I didn't see recommended yet is to get a water filter shower head to clear the chlorine and chemicals. This is a major cause of dry hair and skin in my opinion. Then all the other things you're trying will work better also. You can buy these at most health food stores but very cheaply at Lowes and Home Depot:)

I've had similar problems with my hair when pregnant and for a while after. I use Aussie shampoos, they have one called 'Cleanse and Mend'. It's for greasy roots and dry ends. It has worked great for me. Now I keep a couple of different shampoos on hand for whatever phase my hair is going through. Good luck!

Hi K.,
I know exactly what you are going through because I have been there and done that. Okay; first off, don’t blame it on your hair because that is not the problem. The dryness is coming from your hormones. Your hormone level must be off and it is causing the changes in your hair. Let me guess, along with your hair dryness you also suffer with crazy periods, stress, moodiness, sleep problems (either you don’t get enough sleep or you sleep too much) and you more than likely don’t eat right. Well don’t worry; you are not alone because hormones affect all aspects of our body. “From your head to toes.”
I have an all natural, all organic skincare line called “The Beauty Patch.” My website is being built or you’d be able to order Green Hair Repair. It is great for problematic hair. Coconut repair works well to hydrate your hair and protect your ends. This is another product I make and it works great~!

Coconut Repair..
1 Spray bottle
2 cups coconut milk (Just buy a coconut and hammer a nail in it; drain the milk.)
3 TBS extra virgin olive oil
1/3 cup castor oil
1 cup of distilled water

Mix together. Apply on clean damp hair from roots to ends and comb through. Wrap head with plastic wrap and wrap a hot towel around (on top of) the plastic wrap. Set for 30 minutes; longer if you have time because the longer you let it sit the better it works. Wash and rinse as normal. Do this 3 times a week and you will notice a big improvement in your hair; such as; less dry spells, stronger hair, shinny and healthy looking hair. It works and you will see from first use.

Good luck~! Feel free to stop by my Beauty blogg sometime.

Hey K.,

My mother says that taking fish oil capsules really helps her dry hair and also her dry or itchy skin that occasionally flares up. Also, if you are really run down and not eating right that could be helped with some multivitamin maybe.
And I also had an aunt with thyroid problems that also had very dry/brittle hair, any other symptoms that maybe would warrant a physical from your MD?
Just some thoughts to send your way.
Hope you find some relief soon.

Yes! I think a lot of women experience major hair changes during and after pregnancy. I also had a boost in hair quality and quantity with my pregnancy and at 3 months post partum it all started to fall out! Everywhere. Clumps in the shower and all over the house. The loss is just starting to slow down now at 10 months post partum. About the time I really started trying to breast feed less. It is normal though - blame hormones. And just remember that it means your body is regulating itself as it should :) If thats any consolation!

Once the ends are broke, they are broke and can't be repaired. Hair is dead keratin so it has to grow from the inside out. Since it is dead it can't repair. I would go and get it trimmed as much as you can stand it and then every 2, 3, or 4 days... whatever you have time for, I would wash it, and let it sit with mayonaise (about an hour) in your hair and wrap it up with a hot wet towel. You can rewet the towel with HOT water as many times as you would like. The more the better. OR you could put it up in a plastic bag and sit under the drier if you have one. Then wash thoroughly and make sure you use a really good conditioner and don't rinse it out till it is squeeky. Leave a little slick feeling in it, then dry it but try not to let the drying get too hot on your ends. Use cool dry if your hair drier has one and of course air dry would be the best.... but who does that anymore.
Hope it helps.

Hi K.
I'm 33 also, and have experienced what you are going through now. What I have found helpful is olive oil and a good shampoo that doesn't have sulfate in the ingredients. How to use the olive oil well just put some on your hand and apply little by little to your hair. Then let it sit for about 30 min. then shower or wash off. believe it or not, it washes off real good and your hair is not left greasy. The only shampoo that I know of is SAMY-PURE it is a all natural no sulfate. Why not sulfate well sulfate is the main ingredient that is used in all detergent and can cause dry hair and also scalp which causes my scalp to look as if I have dandruff. You wouldn't put dish soap or laundry detergent to your hair would you? What some would say is that sulfate is necessary to have suds but it's not true it is a cheap ingredient and most of all shampoo's use it. Samy' shampoo does make suds and has no chemicals you'll definitely see a big difference. I promise.

Go get your hormone levels checked! I went through the same thing and my hairdresser sent me to get mine checked - turns out I was in menopause - but wait there's more! After about six months I came back out of it! Strange I know and men thing they have problems. Anyway - get a good shampoo and conditioner - I washed mine everyday too and set your dryer and all other appliances to the lowest setting possible and this too shall pass - You might want to have the ends removed to help it look healthier. I also used a "paste" to kind of stick the ends together and make it look a little better. My hair is naturally curly and very fine and when I went through this all of the curl came out and it looked like my hairdresser had chewed it off instead of cutting it - now it's much better! I currently use Hemp Shampoo,Conditioner, and styling products for fine hair - they also make a moisturizing line. Available at Sally Beauty Supply and no I don't work there! Good luck!

I had the same problem, except that the dry hair was just at the base of my neck. It was aweful to have to brush. The only thing that seemed to help were leave-in hair conditioners,Paul Mitchel has one as does Aussie something and another brand that is very watery but seemed to help. It did not cure it, but did make it a bit more bearable. The further in time you get from your pregnancy the better your hair will get. Although, I did wind up cutting my long hair very short during the summer when my baby was about one. He is now almost 2 1/2 and my hair is almost shoulder length.

Dear K.!
I am with you! I am a 39 year old mom of two boys, 7 and 2. After the first pregnancy, my hair texture changed from oriental straight to wavy and maybe even a little kinky. The dryness was terrible! I could not wash my hair often. Also, little gray hairs started to shoot up as well. After the birth of my second son, the texture remained the same, wavy and kinky. BUT, it began to fall out terribly. It fell out way past the normal time of losing hair after a pregnancy. My hair was long by the way. This was so upsetting. I had always had good hair. I color my hair, but knew this wasn't the problem. Two things I would suggest for you. First, check your health. Problems with the thyroid can cause hair to be very dry, fall out, etc.. Also, my problem was anemia. I had always been borderline and had become severely anemic. Anemia also causes hair to fall out. Taking the vitamin biotin and omega 3's also help hair from the inside. I use a shampoo/cond. combo called Curl Life. It is moisturizing without being greasy. It also keeps my hair manageable. I go easy on volumizers and such. I just cut my hair in a new shorter style that I love. I have to use gel wax, but use a very light one and not all of the time. I have to wash my hair more often, but the hair does not fall out like it did when it was long. It is also not as dry. Are you drinking enough water? If you are nursing it is easy to get dehydrated and those hormones can affect hair too. The new cut I have was worn by Hunter Tylo at the most recent EMMYS. I don't know your length of hair, but it seems that shorter helps with the dryness too. It sounds like you are keeping it trimmed as well. There are some protein shakes geared to hair health. A company called Nature's Plus makes a few as well as a vitamin combo for hair health. Some other companies make these Hair vitamin mixes too. You can find them in health food shops. You can buy biotin on its own and take it. It is also good for skin and nails. Andrew Lessman makes a great product called Healthy Hair, Skin and Nails. He runs a company called ProCaps. You can find him on the web. I hope I have helped some. I can certainly sympathize. Pregnancy changes so many things. (check your thyroid and your stress level)
Blessings,
S.

HI K.,

Washing your hair every day may also be contributing to the dryness. I understand what you say about the greasyness, however, after a couple of weeks of not washing your hair every day, you will find that the scalp will adjust. Just brush your hair 2x's a day to spread the oil. That oil is a good thing.

Also, if you color your hair, you may want to give that a rest. There are different companies out there that say your hair won't dry out, but it does make the hair dry out. I had my hair colored with Aveda last year and it dried it out so bad.

Good luck! The mayo & egg works great. That is what we used when I was a kid on our hair.

K.,
In my experience good hair has less to do with expensive conditioners and more to do with a good diet and enough vitamins. Try taking a good quality whole food multi vitamin and make sure you are eating enough fresh fruits and veggies. Usually during pregnancy we are watching our foods and taking prenatals, which helps our hair stay thick and glossy. It will take a couple of weeks to work, but if you start now, I assure you that your hair will respond. So will your nails and your general energy level.
For a quick treatment, make your own hot oil treatment by putting some olive oil in your hair and wrapping a hot towel around your head and letting it soak in for 5 minutes or so. Then rinse with warm water and wash with shampoo.
You may want to switch to a natural shampoo like Burts bees, because it sounds like your hair might have become addicted to the shampoo and conditioner you have been using. This will make it hard to skip a day like you said.
Hope this helps,
K.

Hi K.-Try Pureology in the lavender bottle. I had the same problem. This worked for me. They sell it at Target or Walmart-can't remember which one. It is not supposed to be sold there but it is or E-bay if you cannot find a salon that has it. Also, don't shampoo everyday if you can help it-wet it but don't wash. A little goes a very long way because they do not put any water in the bottle unlike most others products.

I have always had very fine hair that easily breaks. My hair is color treated so that make it drier than normal and I also can not skip a day without washing my hair. I also had split ends nomatter what I tried. I have tried everything on the market to find the perfect product. I have found a product that works the best but its not a quick fix. Arbonne's hair care is amazing but it takes a while to see the results because Arbonne's tech works from the inside out. Arbonne uses nanosphere tech to strenghten hair as it grows from the root. The problem I have found with other products on the market is they just mask the problem instead of repairing it. Arbonne's hair care will repair the problem instead of masking it.I haven't had a split end in over a year of being on the product. I love this product and the company. You can look at Arbonne's products on my website www.awakening.myarbonne.com or email me if you have any questions.

Here are my thoughts:

When you are pregnant, you body retains everything to keep your baby nourished and you nourished. So your hairs stays put. Plus, the prenatal vitamins you are taking adds a lot to the health of your hair. About three months after you have the baby, everything "extra" your body was holding onto is drained. You hair falls out (your babies does too) and your body starts getting back to normal. Being pregnant and nursing, especially can take a lot of nourishment that would normally be put to use in your own body, is taken to feed your baby.

I find that the more you wash your hair, the faster it gets greasy. Also, the more you wash it, the more you dry it and curl it and straighten it. The more of this, the more dry and damaged. Take a couple weeks of "bad hair": Gradually start washing your hair one day less, until you find the wash cycle that works for you and your hair style. I wash my hair every 4th day. Also, changing shampoos all time and using different moisturizing methods might also me a cause of fast, greasy hair. It creates a build up on your scalp. Another tip, buy a good quality blow dryer at a beauty supply store, the price you will pay is worth the investment.

Have you ever tried olive glossing shampoo and conditioner from THE BODY SHOP AT HOME? It has olive leaf extract, wheat amino acids and wheat protein, honey from zambia. You get strong hair because the olive leaf protects the hair shaft. Your hair can stand the heat due to the amino acids and protein. Beautiful hair shines through. The honey lubricates and smoothes the hair shaft allowing it to reflect light and look shinier. I can get you some to try if you are interested. M.

Hi K.,

There is a new treatment out now specifically for dry and damaged hair that you would definitely benefit from and would most assuredly love! It's called a Brazilian Keratin Treatment. This is relatively new to the US but you can find a few salons that are doing it...it's great for the type of hair you are describing and you will feel like you have a new head of hair! Type it in your browser's search engine and explore for yourself. I'm not sure where you're from but you will see the results for yourself...it's amazing and will be able to find a salon near you if you're interested in having he procedure done! And so much better for your hair than constantly flat ironing your hair and all the other things we do to our hair in the name of making ourselves look good every day!

Just one more suggestion. It sounds like your hair is the same consistency as mine. I can't go a day without shampooing because it gets greasy at the roots and dry on the ends.... a trick my mother in law's very pricy beautician told her is after you have shampooed and conditioned your hair,,, towel dry it,,, then put a dime size amount of the conditioner in your fingertips and apply it to your wet hair ends. Don't rinse it,,leave it in and blow dry it. BUT DONT PUT IT ON THE ROOTS.... it will make your roots greasier...

It worked miracles for mine,,, still does!

My stylist told me to keep taking prenatal vitamins. It will keep your hair shiny and healthy as it grows. Also, I have always lived here and I have fine, oily hair that has a tendency to get dry at the ends. To keep my hair from flying away or getting dry ends, I have to use conditioner everyday. I wash my hair, apply conditioner, and then put it up in a shower cap while I bath. I rinse it out as the last thing I do. It helps me tremendously- something about the heat of the shower and the cap. But you have to do it over time to really see results.

Hi K.,
I feel your misery and frustration. I have gone through some very strange hair changes since my son was born. I had no changes in my hair or skin when I was pregnant with my girls, but then I was 16 & 17 years younger when I had them.

My son is now 4 and 1/2. Right after he was born my hair started falling our like crazy for about 4-6 months, about 3 months after he was born it started to really make weird changes. I went from thick straight, long, silky, shiny healthy hair to still thick (actually thicker), still long, but very curly, desert dry or as you put it crispy, impossibly un-healthy hair in various places. I have checked everywhere I can think of or come up with to find out why. The only common answer I have been able to come up with repeatedly is it comes from hormone changes mainly. Also, I don't know about you, but I used to drink A LOT of water and since my son was born, water just doesn't satisfiy my thirst. I have learned recently that I have PCOS; which can cause hair loss on head and hair growth in other undesirable places. I too have tried all of the expensive salon products and everthing else that promises improvement or change, with no luck as of yet..or none that lasts more than a day or so.

One thing I do hear a lot of is wash your hair less often; but I am like you, no wash, lots of greasy roots; but they say that is acutally good for your hair and your scalp..hard for me, because I have bangs and they look awful when greasy, but if you can pull your hair back and tough it out every other day it may be helpful. Also, a hairstylist told me to wash/rinse hair in mildly hot water; but to rinse conditioner out in warm to cooler water and avoid too much blow drying. My daughter has been washing every other day through the winter and says she has noticed an improvement in the health of her scalp and the health and condition of her hair. She has very long past her waist hair, like I used to have. I have also heard that more healthy oils in your diet (like olive oil, avacados, flaxseed oil, etc.) can be helpful, but it can't be a temporary thing, it is a life-style change. I have tried Melaleuca shampoo products that do work wonderfully, but are expenesive if not a member; I get mine through a friend at her price. Currently, I am using the original Melaleuca shampoo (with tea tree oil), it is great, but like anything else, I think the weeks I use it too much it does the reverse on my hair. But I did use before, their ultra hydrating shampoo and conditioners and I absolutely loved them. If you do fnd a miracle product let me know. Good Luck.

It is your hormones. They were totally out of wack after the pregnancy and now in your thirties are going a bit crazy. No fancy shampoo, conditioner, or other product will correct your hormones. When I was pregnant I "glowed" as do most mothers to be. Glowing simply means your hormones are on overdrive and making your skin, hair, and nails look like they belong to a goddess. It is what I loved so much about being pregnant! Prenatal pills mixed with hormones are like miracle beauty cures. In your thirties, and I'm only turning 31 this week, your homones will play games with your hair, skin, and nails. I've done my research. You may want to talk to your doctor and/or a nutritionist to work on your hair from the inside out. If the fancy products aren't working now, it will only get worse in the years to come. Definitely work from the inside out and Hang in there!

Try drinking more water, taking in less salt, and use the mayonnaise in your refrigerator as a conditioner. If you want it even shinier, try adding an egg to it. After shampooing put a generous amount into your hair. Place a thin plastic cap on your hair for 3-5 minutes. Rinse thoroughly then shampoo lightly and rinse immediately (just for sent). Weekly hot oil treatments are great to, for this you can use the pure olive oil that you should be cooking with. Vitamin E wouldn't hurt either, through food it the best way to get it.

I went through the same thing. It does take time for your hair to replenish, it seems. I am trying really hard to drink my 64 ounces of water a day. Hydration from the inside AND using all the right conditioners and products seem to work. Of course, eating healthy and getting the right amount of sleep help OVERALL Healing of our bodies in every situation. It is hard to do with babies.... I know!

Hi K.,
I read about your hair problems! I had a friend several years ago who had some problems with her hair, and I can't remember if she had too much vitamins in her system or not enough vitamins. I have also heard some people that eat alot of fish have more Mercury in their system, which may or may not cause your problem. Have you tried typing in dry hair on Web MD? It may help you, good luck, V.

Hi K.,

The thing is while you are pregnant, you lose little to no hair. I don't know why, but the body just doesn't lose any. However, the after-pregnancy hormones helps you make up for lost time. My hair started falling out about 3 to 4 months after giving birth and my son is now almost 10 months and it is just starting to ease up. My hair doesn't feel any more or less dry than when I was pregnant, but definately MUCH thinner. Your hair will probably not return to "normal" until the pregnancy hormones regulate again. For some women, this takes quite a while.

I second that - on remaining on the pre-natal vitamins. I would even try a vitamin that is for hair issues.

hi K., i am a hair stylist and you just need to give it time. your body has just gone through (and still is) major hormonal changes. something that will help is getting out of the habit of washing and drying your hair everyday. use baby powder on the days you don't wash and that will soak up the grease. give it about 3 weeks and then it won't produce as much oil. the more you wash it, the more oils it will produce at your scalp. also, if you have to wash it, just shampoo the root area and condition the ends. if you have fine hair, try conditioning first and shampooing last to keep it from being so limp. good luck and have a little patience. :)
