I have a niece who has a dry cough, no other symptoms. Some doctors said asthma, others said no. I don't think it is asthma. Coughs only during the day. I am using a homeopathic for coughs. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

She has a humidifier in her room at night. Since, I don't believe in using drugs for this kind of thing and on a child. I have found another homeopathic cough remedy we are going to try. I think it is something in the temporary place they are staying. Maybe at the end of March when they move into a house of their own, things may change. I can only make suggestions. And I do!

Two thoughts -- there is a mom at church that has had her dry cough for 3-4 weeks now. It's annoying, but she's slowly getting over it. She's been eating/drinking ginger & it helps her stop coughing.

Another thought -- I've had a lingering, dry, annoying cough a couple of times. After weeks, I went into the doctor's office to find out that I've had a terrible sinus infection. After a nasal spray, Mucinex, and an antibiotic, it goes away.

I hope that helps!

my son has the same thing - gets a dry cough - he actually was diagnosed with asthma, which was something that i absolutely did not believe at first, but after 2 hospitalizations, i am a believer now! the asthmas cough is very distinctive - just a dry cough, nothing behind it, and it can go on for days - my son usually coughs more during the day than at night, and sometimes it gets worse with activity, but sometimes it is just during the day. it may be worth taking her to a pulminologist - my son has been on medications for 2 years now, and we have not had any other hospitalizations, which I am so very thankful for.

best of luck!
hugs!

If she is close to two years old or older try Olive Leaf extract. The adult dose is a dropperful mixed into any liquid twice a day. Adjust that for kids starting with 2-3 drops mixed in liquid for lets say a two year old and more for older kids. It is natural and safe and works well for cough. Health food stores carry it.

If the cough gets worse with exercise/exertion, then it likely could be asthma. My bet is that it's actually allergies. I'd try something like Claritin or some other type of antihistamine and see if that helps it or not. Triaminic Cough and Cold actually has an antihistamine and a decongestant in it. You could also try something like Mucinex. (Antihistamines work to dry up mucous; decongestants work to loosen it up; and mucinex works to thin it out. Keep that in mind so you can use it for the right reason(s). Also, be very careful of medications with multiple ingredients - you don't want to give a cough syrup that already has mucinex in it and then give another dose of mucinex (otherwise known as guafenison (sp?)).)

The other thing would be to put a humidifier in her room when she sleeps. That should help too.

Just a few thoughts - good luck!

i get a bad cough or two every single year... it gets so bad that my chest hurts after coughing for days and days. i have had this thing for as long as i can remember.. also get deeply congested to sometimes losing my voice because of it. doctors usually say, it's allergies. i don't know! i'm 30 and still trying to figure all this stuff out. sorry, i don't have any suggestions; but it already seems to be covered. i just felt like sharing...

(btw.. it's not a bad idea to get another doc' opinion - i think!)

I had something like that when I was in high school, and it turned out to be allergies. You might have her tested for environmental allergies. Also, codine-based cough syrups help to get rid of that sort of thing.
