Dry Beans

I put some dry beans in water to soak overnight about one week ago with plans to cook them the next day. I kept forgetting about them. Do you know how long they may stay in the fridge, uncooked? I am wondering if I can still cook them or if I have to throw them away. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies. I decided to play it extra safe and toss them :-) Lesson learned for me to not be so forgetful. Luckily, beans are an afordable lesson :-)

Hi Michelle,

Here's what I always do, when in doubt, I smell the food, if it smells funky pitch it. If not it's o.k. to cook or re-heat. However, I wouldn't keep anything beyond 2 wks.in the frig.(unless it was frozen).

That simple test has worked for me since I started cooking 54 yrs ago. I've never gotten sick.

All the best,
D. P

You can still cooked them as long a they were in the frige the whole time they are fine. I like to prepare them with some smoked meat in a crockpot with some cornbread side of collard greens and fried chicken.

Not sure if they will be all mush or maybe ferment. Smell them and see if they are slimy at all them throw them out.

I think they'll be fine if they were in the fridge. I cook from scratch all the time.

Toss them. It's better to pay for another bag of beans than it is to get sick from eating the bad ones.

I love beans - they are just so good! You could probably grow them in a pot now (not the whole bowl, but just a few)-- that would be a good lesson for your boy on plants (think science).

Good luck!

Hi Michelle,

The beans should be fine if they were properly refrigerated, but when you cook them you won't have to cook them as long because they are really hydrated at this point! So just watch the pot when you boil and season.

Good Luck!

Not sure about a week. I left beans soaking in the fridge a couple days once and they were fine. I would think that since they are in the fridge, up to a week should be fine. Especially since you now have to boil them. I wouldn't leave them any longer though, most foods only last a week in the fridge before they start to spoil.
