Double Ear Infections!!!

Hi

i took my daughter (who is 3) to the doctors wed. afternoon and they told me that she has double ear infections. I have dealt with her having ear infections in the past, but this time it seems to be 10 times worse. She is vomiting and wont eat and i cannot seem to get her temp down past 101. I dont know if there is something worse going on with her or what. The strangest part is that she seems to throw up her antibiotic not even a 1/2 after i give it to her. (Since I wrote this she has only threw up her antibiotic once maybe twice.) She has never done that before. I guess my question is: How long should i wait to see if she feels better? and what can i do in the meantime to keep her comfortable?

Thanks guys!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Hey everyone!

Thanks for all those who responded. She finally broke her fever today and has been herself through most of the day. The reason she was throwing up so much was that the drastic change in weather had given her some sinus drainage. So all in all things are ok shes just suffering with some sinus stuff.

If she is throwing up the medicine, you need to let the dr know this ASAP. It is not doing any good and will not help her get better if it is not staying in her syatem. Ear infections left untreated just get worse and worse and she will be miserable. Use Tylenol/Motrin for pain. There is also over the counter drops that are supposed to help relieve the pain of ear infections. When my son has an ear infection, which is pretty often, he usually acts like he's feeling better within 2-3 days of starting antibiotics.

Dear D., If you haven't read any of my posts before...let me preface this statement with the fact that I have almost 20 years a Physician Assistant Certified in PA & AK.
As far as your daughters fever goes, at 101 the fever is working for her, it is helping to fight the infection. The fact that she cannot keep the antibiotic down means that you need to contact your pediatrician.
Look back and see how often she has had these ear infections, she may be a candidate for having tubes placed in her ears to alleviate the problem. Tubes are not as bad as they sound, it is a simple same day procedure and over time they work themselves out of your daughters body.
Please understand that my opinion should by no means be taken as advice over your pediatrician.
I strongly feel that a visit to her Doctor is in order. A multiplicity of factors could be contributing to her illness including but not limited to: the eruption of new teeth, pansinusitis...and many other benign problems.
At the end of the day only your pediatrician can tell for sure.
I know this is probably not what you want to hear, but it is the best advice I can give you...I hope it helps.
Good Luck,
J. T

It's tough taking care of a sick little girl. You wish you could just make it all go away.

If she's vomiting there are two things: you need to protect her from dehydration (pedialyte if she'll take it) and call the dr. There is something else going on and your dr/nurse practioner/physician assistant can say for sure.

Until then, keep her comfy in bed with quiet activities that she likes and lots of love from you. Maybe a little tv? A favorite movie? Coloring books and dolls? For food, keep it bland; follow the "BRAT" (and no, she's not the brat) diet: Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast.

Don't forget to call your pediatrician/nurse practioner/physician assistant to follow up on the vomiting.

Good luck!

WHIP HER DOWN WITH WARM WATER ,
AND DOSE SHE HAS ALL HER TEETH, THAT CAN PLAY A PART THOSE BACK ONE CAN GIVE A BABY HELL.
AND IF SHE STII GETTING SICK I WOULD TAKE HER TO THE HOSPITAL LIKE NOW. THOSE DOCTOR OFFICE DONT SAY MUCH TAKE HER TO THE HOSPITAL.

In my experience any cold/ear infection/croup type thing tends to be worst in the evening. If she's having a really tough time during the day (which it sounds like she is), I'd call in to the pediatrician. I am one to avoid the ER whenever possible - so many more germs to be exposed to and overwelming for sick kids. With the weekend coming up and since it's been 2 days, you should consult the doc. Many ear infections are viral so they don't respond to antibiotics, but they also usually don't last that long. Plus she's got a variety of other symptoms and the meds aren't staying in and her temp is staying up. (Though a temp isn't all bad - it's your body's way to fight off infection. As long as it doesn't continue to climb and it's not preventing her from resting, the temp is a good sign that her body is working to fight the germs inside. I only treat a temp if it prevents my little ones from sleeping.) Your doc may want you to bring her back in for a recheck or they may have other advice and suggest waiting it out over the weekend and offer advice for keeping your daughter comfortable. They can also let you know what to watch for to know if she would need more care and may need to go to the hospital - all good things to know going into a weekend. Good Luck. I hope she's feeling better soon. It's so hard when they are feeling yucky.

My son supossedly had a double ear infection as well when he was 9 months old. I continuouslt took him to the doctor and got the same answer. I knew it had to be more because it was like no other ear infection he had. Finally on Christmas Day I took him to the ER and he was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection. After getting the medication for that, he was ok in no time.
Hope this helps.
Good luck

D.,

OK, there is a stomach virus going around so she might have that on top of the ear infection..... i just got over a massive ear infection with my 5yr. his temp was 103.9 for a day... for the fever i gave tylenol than two hours later i gave Motrin....two hour gave him the tylenol so every two he had fever meds. in his system.....she might need a Strong meds.. i like zitromax it works fast...amoxicillin is a slower....she might need a different spectrum ... you might try to give her a cracker before the meds ,just so she has something on her stomach. also you must trust your doctor and what they tell you... if you don't trust them..find one you can trust....you should feel free to call them anytime. asking for advice is good,,, but i always go with my gut feeling you know you daughter the best...

If she is not acting as she normally does with an ear infection, call your doctor. If you can't reach them or think that they are off base, you're the mom - go with your gut - let them know you are taking her to the pediatric ER anyway.

If she's not keeping fluids down, she's going to get dehydrated. Be sure to watch intake and output (urination). Try to keep her hydrated - meaning water, not sugary juices, etc. - at all costs. If her urine ends up bright/dark yellow and stays that way, she's getting dehydrated. Not a good thing.

Possibly try ice chips with her. They take a little longer to injest than water and it may be that the slowness will not agrivate her stomach.

Remember, you are the mommy. You know your child better than anyone. Do what you feel is best. Often your gut instinct is better than any dr.
