Doc Band for My Older Baby

I have been doing some research on the doc band and came across several inquiries about various doc band experiences. and am curious if there are other parents who have gone through the treatment with an older child.
Our 10 month old son just went to a cranial technologies office (pasadena, ca location) to have his head looked at per our request. It was recommended by a tech there that he use the doc band and that if we went ahead with the procedure, he'd have his band pretty much ready to go by the beginning of the new year...a month shy of his first birthday, which falls at the end of january. I too am concerned about the shape of his head, much more than his pediatrician, who says that his head will round out on its own. Well, he's 10 months, and it still seems pretty flat to me. We've tried repositioning him, but maybe we didn't do it correctly, often enough, etc.? I don't know.
Anyway, He was diagnosed with moderate flattening of the right back side of his head. It's not super noticable to the public eye, but I can see it, and clearly my fears were confirmed at his evaluation. It is flat on the right back side of his head, which is affecting the shape of other sections of his head. Because he is nearing the one year mark, I am wondering how effective the band will be since he is on the older end of the spectrum.
I know that our son's case is cosmetic at this point, but who knows how his current head shape will affect his physical well-being later on in life, right? I want to know that we did what we could to help him out...
Anyway, I hope others can provide some insight for us.
Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks for your stories and advice. We are going in for a second consult tomorrow to have his head measured and photographed, then we will go from there. I'm just not sure what we are going to do at this point, but it seems that we are leaning toward the helmet. We'll see what happens. I'll keep you posted!
Thanks!!

We did it. I wished we'd done it sooner because we waited until after his first birthday. There are other companies who do the helmets too. I would check into the other companies too. We used the DOC band and were pretty pleased since he was 15 months when we started. His case was pretty bad and we waited too long. Even though we knew that we couldn't get a 'perfect' head we went ahead with it. It did make a really big difference. Most people don't notice it at all. I wish I'd considered it sooner because the shape of my son's head has caused problems in one of his ears. You may feel it's only cosmetic but you may be wrong. My son had chronic ear infections that were caused because the shape of his skull screwed up the workings of the inner ear...who knew! He's now 3 and most people don't notice at all. I've got his 'old head' in his closet on the top shelf where he can't reach. They make a model head to form the band and they let me have it once he was done. It's kinda funny to have your kids head on a stick! If you have concerns about how your son will react to the helmet don't worry because he won't. I was shocked. My son has sensory issues and wouldn't wear a hat EVER! I was really afraid of his reaction and prepared myself for some long nights and screaming fits. We put it on his head and he literally acted like nothing was there. I took him home for a nap and he went right to sleep and the band didn't bother him at all. It was actually kind of nice because if he fell or banged his head into anything the band protected his head like a bike helmet. He walked quite late because of his crooked head so it was nice that when he hit the dirt his head was ok. I would recommend it to anyone. Get it going right away because the sooner the better. You'll be glad you did.

At my sons 2 month check up the doctor noticed that the left side of his head was a little flat and told me to try to move his head to the other side when he was laying down to even it out. I would do this all the time because I was starting to really notice the flat side, but no matter what I did to keep him off of his head it was still very flat. His pediatrician mentioned the band but I wanted to avoid that because they are very expensive and he told me it would eventually round out on it's own and once he had more hair it wouldn't even be noticeable. I ALWAYS noticed it and I would obesess over it but when I would tell other people about it they'd say they never noticed it before. Once my son was 11-12 months old he finally grew some hair and I couldn't even tell if his head was flat on that side anymore. He is 2 1/2 years old now with a full head of hair and I still rub that side of his head to see if it's flat, but I can't tell. I personally wouldn't do it at this point since they usually recommend starting the band at a younger age and I'm not sure how beneficial it would be at this point. It probably looks a lot worse to you then it really is because you know it's there and are always looking at it, thats how it was with me anyways.

Hi Babymama :-)

First thing is I admit I have no idea what you are talking about! I am going to google it quickly, just never heard of it. BUT.. second thing is, my husband's back of his head is as flat as a pancake. He has a very big head, as he is a big man of 6'4".

There is NOTHING wrong with his head or his brain, he is a very successful business man with a brilliant mind! I don't think for one second that the shape of his head has influenced anything... except.. maybe made him more brilliant?!!

If your child does not seem to be having ANY kind of complications with this head shape, I would just allow him to BE... your pediatrician is saying it is fine, so perhaps check in with yourself and see what is going on and why this shape is bothering you... could be some great insights there!

If you are still stressed out by it, you can learn a technique to help balance your brain and de-stress. You can do this technique on your son as well!
You can find it through locating my business .. just click on my profile.

Relax and enjoy your son, I bet you are both just perfect!

I did it for my first and third son and its worth it. By the way, for my last child I went to a place in Long Beach, I think it was S.T.A.R band or something. We lived in palos verdes at the time. I drove all the way to cranial technologies in Burbank for my first one. My son was mod to severe right sided flatness and he wore it for 3 to 4 months. Anyways, being that your son is one you still have time to reshape his head. It will take time getting use to it but the results are worth it.
