Do You Carry One????

Hello Moms

Lately I have been thinking about how things that are considered "green" today are really things that my mom/grandmother use to do when they were younger. What popped into my head was carrying a handkerchief. Instead of wasting funds on carrying tissue, I remember my grandmother would always have one in her purse. My sister actually carried one of hers when she got married ( her something old). I was just wondering how may people still carry handkerchiefs? Do you?

What can I do next?

That is one of the few things I just can't be green about. Carrying my snot around with me, does not sound like a good time.

I don't... I find it gross to carry around a used handkerchief. Blegh... It's not that expensive to buy those little travel packs of tissues, and they break down fairly quickly. Hubby keeps a roll of toilet paper in the car for himself. Now that I have my DD, diaper wipes are always close at hand so that's what I use for myself. :)

I have a whole drawer full of them. I love the little lacy edges or the pretty embroidery, even the quirky prints. I carry one and I like knowing I'm not filling up land fills. I throw them into the wash and know I'm not getting any hidden chemicals or scents that may affect my sinuses when I use them. They're small enough to fit into a pocket but big enough to dab a drippy nose. If I have to mega blow, I go for something a little bigger like tp that's safe for septic systems - they break down quickly and have nothing to pollute the ground water. The best place to get them is at yard sales or antique shops. That's where you'll find the prettiest borders.

I carry one in my purse at all times. My almost 3 yr old asks for one when he sneezes. He probably doesn't know what a kleenex is. But 'hanky' is a common word in our home. I actually just use a bandana, but I have about 10 of them in different colors that we keep clean and ready to go for when we need them. Me, my husband, and my son all use them.

btw - keeping one in your purse is great. I sometimes have to use it as a rag to clean up a spill or dab blood from a boo-boo on my son's knee or to wipe a dirty face when there's no napkin or wipey available.

btw - now that I read other responses: If the hanky gets used (the one in my purse), I stuff it into my pocket generally and it goes into the dirty laundry when we get home. That's why I have 10 hankies -- so that I can always have a clean one ready to go. We are a relatively clean family and don't get sick often at all. I don't think twice about spreading germs. There are more germs on the grocery cart and on my steering wheel and on the playground equipment than there is in a square inch of that hanky (I would guess).

I don't carry a handkerchief, but around the house, I use a square towel (hand towel size) for the same purpose when I am sick. I use them (what I use for burp rags) for cleaning the baby's nose ... why not for mine? There's really nothing especially gross about it ... all those same germs are all over your hands, on your breath, etc.

I also cloth diaper!

You bet I do! I also cloth diaper so washing things with gross stuff on it is an everyday thing.

My family uses them. I got tired of buying boxes of tissues only to have the toddler pull them all out and destroy them. And those things are way too expensive to be using with the intent of throwing them away IMO. So I went to a thrift store and bought a whole bunch of old vintage ones and washed them all really good. They're cheap enough that it doesn't matter if the kids lose one. Since all of us have at least one bag with us at any one time, it's easy to just carry a small baggy to put used ones in so we're not getting snot or whatever all over our pockets etc. We all have at least 2 clean ones with us at any one time, more if we're sick and we know we'll be using several. I do admit that when we're super sick that I'll buy a box of tissues. I don't have a big enough supply for a tissue a minute for one person, let alone 6! It's horrendous when all of us are sick at the same time.

I just like having a tissue I can throw away, cause the thought that comes in my head, is germs! Lol. I dont want to carry around a snotty handkerchief all day. And when its used up, its used up. I like to be able to throw away my tissue, and out comes the hand sanitizer.

I have a handkerchief but for emergencies. I carry tissues for blowing noses. Handerchiefs seem like they would pass a lot of germs around.

I have them. I carry them when I need it (like when my nose is running). Can you still get them? I could use a couple more.

I have some of my grandfathers (new) from when he died, but they aren't the small, soft, pretty ones that most people think of. I have tried to use them, but for the above reasons, and because I don't have enough, it didn't last long. I do carry an Ewwwwie Rag for the kids which is probably a microfiber face cloth because it is soooo much softer on their noses and I can reuse if for the little runniness. If I could find some nice hankerchiefs, I would definitely carry some.

My father in law insists on using handkerchiefs and when I was pregnant and DD was 8 mos old, he gave us both influenza because of his germ spreading and carrying it around. While some people might not share germs while using one...he certainly did. *sigh* -- of course it could be in part his sneezing and not so great at always handwashing after touching that darn hankie too!

i would but i am one of those moms who wont carry a purse and seldom wear a coat. my walk it bigger but i would forget to put it back. so as gross as this may sound..when we are in the middle of a runny nose festival at our house and we are out and about...i have a large towel i keep in the car. I can throw it to the back and not make it out of reach for short arms..they can throw it back up and get it to where i can reach it. if we are out in a store...here comes the coat, shirt or pants in for the rescue. This winter i have been catching colds left and right..so i had to have the tissue at hand...or i was resorting to TP which can get expensive...

Believe it or not... I usually have some sort of 'shop rag' or something that I keep in the car or a cloth diaper in the diaper bag. A bag of shop rags (at an auto store) is cheaper than buying hankies and you can still wash them. Or use an old sweatshirt/t-shirt, whatever and tear it into pieces... That's what the 'bag o shop rags' actually is.

I am all for "being Green", but I have to draw the line at a hankie! YUCK! Why would you want to carry one around filled w/snot? I don't think it's healthy either. I understand it takes more resources to make the tissues, but at least the are biodegradable when your done. This of course is just my opinion!

I carry a package of tissues but also have a little washcloth I carry around "just in case" I usually end up using to wipe off a swing at the playground but never to wipe my 18 month old's nose. I understand being "green" but I think using a disposable tissue is probably the healthiest and aren't they biodegradeable?

Nope! I used disposable tissue if needed or a baby wipe. The thought of something else to carry around and have to launder is enough to dissuade me!

My partner (who is youngish 30) always carries one and it comes in handy. He never seems to use it so I'm not sure why he got in the habit of carrying one--in fact, before we were dating he handed it to me to use during a sad movie...hmmm...maybe that's why he was carrying one at 18? Anyway, like I said, it's super handy for baby spit up etc., but we're not a family of runny noses (except for when we're all really sick) so I don't even associate it with snot...

Not a hanky like you or a shop rag like Aubrey, but a Bar Mop. Got 'em everywhere. Used to be I had cloth diapers everywhere.
Course the bar mops aren't embroidered like the hankies, or greasy like the shop rags, but sometimes they get a little mildewy smelling!

Carrying a handkerchief as a bride is one thing. Actually using one is something different. Carrying your snot around in your pocket or purse, to touch when you reuse the hankie? No thanks. That's a little too green for me.

My grandfather (95) was/is a big "hankie" guy. He used to give them to me to blow my nose in as a little kid and even then I was suspicious of them and thought it was weird/gross to keep something with snot on it, on your person. But I'd be willing to give them another shot...
